Progress.   Today I fitted the bottom "pull" fan which I am hoping will provide the rest of the rig with some air. Air flow in this case is pretty terrible.  Just waiting on some braided extensions and the heat sink for the Poweradjust, then I can start work on mounting the PCBs for that. |

Mostly design so far. Not feeling confident enough to do the cutting yet but it doesn't take long. Here is the base plate that will hold the USB computer that will control all of the fans and pump (Aquacomputer PowerAdjust USB and Splitty 9)  Then onto what will become the new star of the show. I fitted a rather natty water block to my Titan XP a while back now.  The back plate is actively water cooled right above the VRM area too.  Sadly you don't see the cool side of it with the pastel coolant running through it  So I decided to make a back plate for my sound card out of mirror acrylic. So that you can see it doing its thing. However, making back plates is not easy if you want them to be perfect. I discovered a while back that if I scan something (no matter how the DPI) that what it spits out is correct in scale and size when you open in Photoshop. So what I do now when making back plates is not just hack one out of a sheet of acrylic and plop it on because if you look closely you can see the cap caused by components, solder etc. So first up I scan the card on the scanner.  Then I create two templates. One for the solid plate.  I know, boring rectangle. However, I then take that and place it over the card. Then I use blending to make that layer transparent, then cut out all of the troubled areas that will case elevation.  I then take that and cut it by hand. It takes a very steady hand and a lot of time and patience. What you end up with though is more than worth the time and effort, as you can see from this GTX 950 here.  I also went so far as painting all of the edges of the PCB black. |

I wouldn't leave what is an electrical item full of water by itself. I wouldn't even trust a sealed loop cooler overnight. Unfortunately like everything else as soon as I water cooled one PC properly I had to do all of them. I have flow meters etc in one, as it was having troubles. That is what you get for cramming two separate loops into a case not designed for any. But yeah, paras, innit. |

Then I started having failed components and realised that overclocking the crap out of them adds hours, and hours adds capacitor degradation and etc. So I got a NAS, and have a Madcatz M.O.J.O (kinda like a Shield clone) in the bedroom that streams from the NAS. So there is really no point in leaving any of the PCs on any way. Plus one of them is rather old (the green one in the pic there) and has a Phenom 2 6 core thing in it. It uses quite a lot of power even at idle.. |

I'll happily leave it turned on if it's doing 'something', such as uploading one of my epoch-defining YouTube videos (which can run to 3-4GB), or doing a massive download, or, erm, doing a copy of the 'fillums' folder on my NAS for a friend. Other than that, why wouldn't you just turn the thing off? Components do have a finite life, fans will eventually get noisier and grindier over the years, you're pulling more dust into your system (or at least you'll have to clean the filters more often), and it will draw an amount of power. My PC doesn't serve up any shares or anything else to the network, the Minecraft server runs on Mrs Hearthly's PC, all the media and other shares are on the NAS - there's literally no reason not to turn it off at night that I can think of. (And it boots up in a few seconds, so it's not like the olden days where it'd take a few minutes to have a usable system after turning it on.) |

As my desktop and laptop are both running SSDs, I'm not fussed about waiting for them to boot, so I'd rather have things turned off overnight. |

I was looking for one a few months ago and couldn't find one - although of course that might just be because most listings on places like Amazon are terrible at actually listing the motherboard's features, and they never include things like that in "refine your search" filters. |

You can get WIFI on a lot of boards but you will pay a chunk extra for it. Bluetooth is quite uncommon though. |

They are fine for controllers and so on but for audio they *suck*. Made a host board and shortened the link cable from 70cm to 4cm. Braided a molex to power it up, too.

Yep, I have a bluetooth dongle on my main PC (and I don't use wifi on it anyway) but it uses up a USB port which is frankly unnecessary, when as far as I can tell there's no justifiable reason not to have it built into the mainboard. If I can buy a wifi dongle for £5 and a bluetooth dongle for £5, logically it must cost a fraction of that to stick it into the mainboard. |

I don't know if there's something odd about the case that HP used for my PC, but with PCI and USB Wi-Fi adaptors, I'd never get a good enough signal just to reach downstairs. How I ended up working around the problem was to use a USB extension cable with a Wi-Fi adaptor on the end and trail the cable well away from the PC. Looks stupid, but the connection has been solid ever since. (Not all that relevant to your point, but I'm killing time before lunch )
