The quality was ok for the virtual meet. What I would recommend you get is a decent microphone

Tried it. Performance was ok. Didn't seem that impressive until I turned off rtx. The difference is notable, but it's polish on top of 20 year old early 3D assets...

Water looks good though.

Had a quick bash at lunch, it ran better than I was expecting (around 40-45FPS with ray-tracing turned up to max at 1080p), but I wasn't that impressed really, I think part of the problem is that game developers have got so good at other lighting effects over the years, that proper ray-traced elements don't seem that much different, except they come at a massive computational cost.

As for the game itself, well, the less said about that the better, let's just leave it in the past.

So yeah, it held my attention for about 10 minutes.

I use a headset with a mic on. I find that eliminates most of the echo you'll get from using a normal mic in a large room.

Yeah I wasn't a huge fan of Quake RTX. I actually bought it, but it soon got very boring.

Control looks amazing in places, but some of it looks very, IDK? "bitty"?

It's DLSS2 I am interested in. It looks great and boosts performance.

Going back and looking more closely, it's basically the reflections and shadows that have had an upgrade. It's not the kind of thing you could really do with existing hardware. Particularly the shadows.

And say what you will about the game, but at least you don't run out ammo every time you sneeze with your finger vaguely near the gun trigger.

my son needs a new laptop for school, and we're making it a gaming laptop since he is introducing his savings.. so we're aiming at 700-800 euros... (600-700 pounds these days?)

Thinking about

or

Any ideas if these are good or another recommendations?

It was indeed supposed to look like a Nokia phone. I've been trying to pull together a load of crappy old parts to make my son a PC he can do his homework on. Thought I was doing ok with above PC, but I can't get it to connect to the network. Might have to roll it back to Windows 7 to get some working drivers.

I stupidly ran some work courses in my own PC and must have hit ok too many times without looking.

This allowed corp group polices to be applied to my own PC.

I decided to rebuild as I had not a clue about removing these policies.

All went well, but I noticed this (see pic) had stopped working when I wanted to copy my files to a spare HDD.

There seem to be a lot on amazon, is there a better / different alternative?

Fuck me, that's had some love. So what's stopped working, the DVD drive? The USB drive? The entire PC?

The case has been round a while.. Like triggers broom.

It has had new
PSU,
RAM (8GB),
CPU Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3470 CPU @ 3.20GHz, 3201 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
Motherboard (ASROCK Z75 Pro3),
SDD HDD.
Graphics - XFX R7800

It is a a little large, but not found a reason to buy a new System yet.

The drive thingy below the DVD drive. It has a space for 3.5 and 2.5 inch HDDs. Is a bit flakey now

Having a bit of a nightmare with PC headsets. Used a wired Plantronics until the cat chewed through the cable.

So decided to go bluetooth, getting the MPOW HC500, plus the bluetooth dongle apparently containing its drivers.

Whatever I do, I can't get it to reliably appear in my audio and mic device list in my video conferencing software.

So I think I'm on the hunt for a new headset.

Anyone got any bluetooth headset recommendations? And I'm happy to go back to wired, but the cable needs to have a bit of girth to it :hat:

£100 max, ideally around the £50 mark.

Thanks to IT support at work I've now got a pair of these clandestine cans. People won't even know I'm wearing them. Tres discreet.

Just checked! It was a different t shirt but red stripes. I'm quite fond of stripes.

what are folks recommendations.

Whatever Logitech one fits your preferences and budget. MX Master, maybe. I've switched to the MX Vertical and they're nice too.

I love this mouse.. The 'guesture' button. I have set to pause and play, so when I am listening to stuff i can, well yes pause easily.

I am tempted to get this mouse for my work machine, I am really really impressed.

Hnrgh, my inner gadget fiend is twitching now. But I can't justify £100 on a new mouse at the moment (especially as I just spent similar on a Garmin Vivosport 4).

There's nothing wrong with my current, very basic wireless mouse. But I'd imagine it would be a bit like hopping out of a perfectly serviceable Vauxhall Astra and into a Beemer.

The Master MX is £50 at amazon.. The MX2 & 3 is more. Is this helping :)

Not especially :D And I just realised I get 25% off at the Logitech shop through work.

Enjoy your new mouse :)

I have this, BTW!

It took a little getting used to, but I love it. The perpetual scrolling mouse wheel is a thing of mechanical beauty.

I'm yet to use many of the other features, but need to build them into muscle memory. It's a lovely thing though.

My PC has died.

Swapped out a HDD caddy, all worked fine. Noticed one the internal HDD was not showing. Powered off, resat the power to the HDD. PC refused to power on.

Did the usual, tried to short the power sw on the MB, and disconnected the power to all the drives.

Had to give to to a local PC repair to look at it.. as it is past my knowledge of computers.

It looks like it is the MB as it has been tested and intermittently refuses to power on.

my PC is like triggers broom, just the original case. I am wondering if it is new PC time..

If you need a new mobo, that's probably new CPU and RAM at least.

Depending on the age of your kit and what you plan on doing with it, it's often more economical to go for a new box

Although if you have a decent SSD and power supply already, a nice Rysen mobo bundle could see you right for a few years

The case is one I got many many years ago, I think it was a JC recommendation, from overclockers, me and Nervous Pete got the same one.

It had a new MD, CPU, RAM and PSU put in a few years back. I put an SSD in about the same time..

The case just looks a bit battered, as it has moved house a lot.

If what you have is decent then a straight mobo swap is the most sensible, if least exciting option.

It is a Z75 Pro3 MB..

this is from the chap looking at it -

"I think just a motherboard would do it. Can add more RAM if it were needed as an easy upgrade. Processor is middle of the road, and not bad - it comes down to if it is quick enough for you for the games you play or e.g. video/photo editing work - more than enough for office work and web browsing etc. But lets see as I've had a few over the years where I've done similar to this and they've got over the glitch and just kept on working for a long time. If its not going to, it should fail again pretty soon . I'm off out now but will do more testing when I get back then we can make a decision - any more loss of recognizing graphics card or not powering on and then make a decision for new MB or new PC. Hope thats OK with you?"

I have my PC back, and it is fine now. It looks like it could be an intermittent fault on the MB, that could last a day or years.

If it fails again, I think a new PC time.

Man, you don't want to be living with that kind of Damoclean sword hanging over your head; what if it packs in at a point when you really critically need the PC to be working? Might be worth at the very least seeing if you can get a like-for-like replacement motherboard and just swapping everything over so you're not waiting for it to fail.

I have two laptops, and life on the edge is fine. :)

If it dies, I will be without a PC for a week max, until i order one and get it delivered.

Seeing as how I've slowly assembled a gaming computer I thought I should get a suitable case for it. It has a glass side (that you can't see at all when it's in its normal place) and LEDs and everything. I quite like that it looks like set dressing from some low-rent scifi TV show and it actually is all running way cooler and quieter with three case fans vs just one at the back like I had before.
