Web-nerds!

Does anybody know of a company who sells lists of email addresses?

How could you ever 'buy' a list of email addresses knowing full well that they'll either have been illegally harvested from the random web, or at the very least include a whole bunch of people who almost certainly don't want your spam?

It has nothing to do with me. I'd just like to know of a company who sell them. I'm not going to spam anybody, and I'm certainly not going to spend money on a list of email addresses.

Er, I'll rack my brian* as the marketing departments at the Giant Multinational Cosmetics Company I used to work at used a few, and I worked on the contracts.

*Yes, brian. He's very knowledgeable.

Jonarob - fill your boots here, mate. Search under "list broker".

I can give you a list of all the WoBistro members' addresses. There are 250 or so of those.

To you mate, that'll be £2 each.

You can buy "targeted" lists rather than the useless harvested lists. A targeted list is where you know the companies you are emailing may fall into a specific catogary, eg Healthcare. These lists are made the same way traditional postal mailing lists are made.

I have no idea where you buy them though.

Zacktly! Truth be told, the company I work for are looking for a way to get some targeted email addresses. All legal and above board. We're white hat. It's a difficult task to find a list of email addresses that aren't harvested for spamming purposes apparently. Thought some of you webby-types might know something.

I was under the impression that any e-mail address that could be construed as personal (e.g. [email protected] instead of [email protected]) cannot be sold as you need to get explicit consent to e-mail them with your specific marketing material.

We certainly don't let any of our clients use purchased mailing lists with our e-mail marketing system.

Don't be rash. Leave two badly mangled survivors who will live to tell the tale in the shady corners of pubs across the land.

This reminds me of something I read once. A military installation somewhere in the Middle East is raided and blown all to hell by the heroes. As the heroes make their getaway, two villains pulling themselves from the rubble talk.

"How will we get the Americans back for this?"
"How do you know it was the Americans?
"Because if it were the British we'd all be dead and if it were the Isrealis we still wouldn't know they'd been here. No-one else has a secret service that comes close."

My dad always used to tell me that it went:

1) Mossad
2) SAS
3) KGB
4) DGCE

in terms of effective secret services

Actually, if it were one my dad's old spy thrillers I read this in and it were KGB folk talking that would make some sense. And yeah, my dad told me pretty much the same thing, mostly from a distilled diet of Deighton et al.

SAS aren't secret service, they're special forces. In any case the good ol' Stasi would have trumped 'em.

Not really as most people in the Intelligence agencies just spend a lot of time reading books and searching the internet a la George Smiley rather than James Bond.
