1942: Joint Strike - Review

I just reviewed the new 1942 game.

Is pretty much how I feel about the game.

The only things I might have expanded on were the bosses (I thought they were pretty generic and unimpressive), the weapons (they seem a little unbalanced, I can't imagine using anything but the lasers) and probably would have tested out the co-op mode as part of the review process (it scores points by not being a lagfest like Ikaruga was).

1942 is deffo a bit of a grower and is really at its best when playing for leaderboard larks. A bit like Omega Five.

I agreed with your review! I think it definitely grows, but I still find the bosses difficult to survive short of hiding in a corner and only coming out to shoot them when they're not shooting at you, which is a bit boring. The actual levels are great fun.

Puzzle Quest is still 1200 as far as I know. There was an expansion released for it the other week which was 800 - that might be what you saw.

deffo 800 now with the DLC being 700. 800's about right for the game (although I cant seem to be arsed playing it). the DLC can get tae.

there's another 1200 to 800, Lumines. I never saw the point of Lumines. Like E4 it just seems to go on forever.

I didn't play the original, so can't comment whether it's a faithful representation. I'm not too fond of it, though.

All it needed from the original was the music and I was sold. It appears to suck though.
Is it Galaga next week? That's supposed to be really good.

Is Fable 2 Pub Games not the biggest piss take you've ever seen? 800 points for three SHITE gambling games, so you can then punt the winnings into a shite game nobody wants to give yourself an unfair advantage?

Molyneux has lost it once and for all.

Haha.

Actually, yeah it is better than braid. Less important or whatever, blah blah. But god, if this is 20 year old level design we've fucked up.

I've not had such single-player-must-complete-enjoyment from an XBLA since Omega 5.

It's astonishingly good.

I shall do a GAUNTLET thread, then.

I tried 1942: Joint Strike last night.

The bosses are indeed a bit cack... the one in the demo has no less than four guns that each fire a huge spread of bullets, meaning you have to lurk to one side to avoid being hit... except you can't, as if you don't hurry the boss gets bored and buggers off.

The choice of planes is a good idea (the Shinden needs to be in more games, as it's uber) and being able to recharge your rockets in addition to a chargeable supershot is good.

The music, however, I'm not as convinced by. It sounded like generic orchestral drivel until I noticed that the faint melody was that of 1943... but nevertheless, given the effort that's gone into everything else to make it look 'period', a more jazzy/swing type set of tunes would have been better.

It's also a shame that the game is a mixture of real aircraft and ridiculous imaginary machines.

the bosses can be learned, thankfully. I can S-rank all of them on medium difficulty and most on the hardest setting.

yesterday's games were horrible.

Shred Nebula shouldnt have that many controls (2 thrusts and 1 reverse?!) and is roughly as good as that awful Wing Commander remake.

The Pirates v Ninjas Dodgeball is even worse than the last dodgeball game and that was irredeemably shit.

Gin Jummy is gash, even at that price.

Can't argue with any of that.

Gin Rummy - Played a couple of hands before getting bored (there seems to be a lot of loading for what seems a very simple enough game)
Pirates Vs Ninjas Dodgeball - turned it off after 10 seconds.
Shred Nebula - The best of the three (not saying much) but by the end of the tutorial, I'd lost interest.

:this:

Very disappointed. The horrible controls meant that i just couldn't face, finding this to find that to shoot this to find that to jump to the next level. Bah!

If you have thrust on the trigger, then it's best to have rotate on the stick. But instead you point in direction with stick and thrust all over the shop. It makes it feel very cheap.

Shred Nebula has to win some kind of award for user-unfriendliness for sure. It's like they actually don't want you to have fun playing it or something.
"Okay, press the left trigger and the right button and then X and then the Start button and remember the analog stick doesn't actually spin you round properly, then crash and die, okay?"

amusingly the devs who made Shred Nebula are all over the internet defending the controls.

Anyone tried yesterday's releases? I might try Samurai Shodown 2 but I think I've got the AES cart for it somewhere so it seems a bit daft buying it again.

Rocketbowl looked vaguely interesting until I aimed a shot into another set of pins and it bounced off. Terrible framerate as well.

Samurai Showdown 2 was listed as being 400M$P and I would have picked it up (despite not being at all arsed) just to support that pricing. Then, at the 11th hour, they upped it to 800 for a straight port with shit online play.

Microsoft need to fuck off really.

Did like the Shogi game (for anyone with a slight interest in chess or strange board games, try it, the tutorial is great too) last week..

there were some rumours of a Go game before, so i hope that after this it will be realised, do wonder how strong it will be as an opponent, because as you might know, computers suck at Go

TGS - XBLA MEGA NEWS!

Did you wonder why Metal Slug 7 looked rescaled on the DS? It's cos they used the old res artwork - which means METAL SLUG 7 for XBLA

Space Invaders Extreme was the suprise game of the year for me - and I'll be buying it again as SPACE INVADERS EXTREME for XBLA!

Also announced:
Arkanoid Live will be coming to XBLA
120 stages, online coop and versus modes, with straight up Arkanoid graphics
King of Fighters 98 Ultimate Match
R-Type for XBLA

(The 360 is also getting Tekken 6, new Halo 3 single player and 99 nights 2.)

Very, very excited about Space Invaders Extreme with good leaderboards

I actually wish they'd wait and do releases like they did across summer, not sending out any old shovelware for when they don't have anything decent...

Hopefully they'll implement a "Hold the fire button down" for Space Invaders Extreme and instantly make it a 2 star better game than it is on DS.

Hope the 99 nights sequel is better than the first game. It was very pretty but repetitive with your allies being very ineffective, especially in comparison to something like Warriors Orochi.

Anyone tried yesterday's releases?

Beats 'n Groovy (or whatever it is) - Konami Bemani game which should've got me interested but the music is pretty awful and the notes you have to hit seem pretty incidental to the music. I've only tried it on the easy setting of 3 buttons though, so I'll try it on 5 before I dismiss it.

Tenchu - Seems a pretty tenuous link to the Tenchu series. Seems inoffensive enough but didn't grab me.

All the arkanoid versions these days seem way to slow, although I love anything like that so Ill probably buy it regardless.
Tekken 6 though really? thats pretty shocking.

I bet I end up buying R-Type. Again.

I just recently picked up PS1 R-Types for two quid, and as it's arcade accurate I'd like to think this will be the last time I buy a version of the original R-Type having already bought it for the Amstrad CPC, Spectrum and Master System (twice, about ten years apart) already.

But I've got a feeling I'll still be tempted to finally get some MS Points, even if the only change is achievements and a leaderboard.

Apparently in R-type you can switch between 3D and traditional 2D sprites. Fact fans.
