Question: What is the state of the art in knitting machines?
My mum had one and would occasionally knit us 70s-patterned jumpers and the like.

I once tried to see how to add a motor and connect it to my C64 but it was too complicated.

Surely, in these modern times... ?

I do not think the technology has moved on very much, from what I understand. i think you can now get ones that are digitally programmable, rather than relying on punch cards, but I think teh mehasminsm is still pretty much teh same.

To be fair I have never had the opportunity to try one, though Craig will swear that I once owned one, this is only in his imagination.

Great, now I want to make an internet-controlled, interactive Web2.0 knitting machine with live telemetry.

Homebrew CNC knitting machine? If you can incorporate some sort of lathe, I'm in.
Ooh! Can we power it by steam to make it even more awesome/manly? :D

Be careful what you say in the review. If it factually incorrect/unprovable and the manufacturers view it as impacting on sales, then they could get arsey.

I won't give anything as fact, but I'll say that I found them uncomfortable. I don't dislike the needles, but I'll say that they're not quite the thing for me.

How strange. I can't really read all the thread at the minute but I guess it is something to do with resonant frequencies or some gubbins. I'm sure the brainos have thought it all out anyhows.

In a strange way reminds me of cotton wool balls. Touching those things messes me the fuck up. No idea why.

I'd say that was the safest option Mimi, especially as you have mild Raynaud's symptoms anyway, which as Doc says will almost certainly increase your personal susceptibility to VWF. :)

In terms of the true source of the vibration, I guess it's also possible that the particular grip/needle combo could be setting off a, actual tremor in your hand whose 'natural frequency' happens to closely match a key resonant frequency/mode of the needle(s) as you're holding them, thereby amplifying the apparent vibration still further. In other words, the true vibration source may not actually be wholly - or even partially - due to any mechanism directly associated with the needles/knitting operation per se, but more to do with posture, grip and stiffness of the needles. :nerd:

Also going to edit to say Hi to Cavey, who has been absent  Nice to see you :munkeh:

Thanks sweetie, I'm glad I was of some help, hi to you as well. :)

Hiya! I just wanted to say, I think that reading Mimi's post the assumption was that the vibrations couldn't be that strong and so when you suggested White Finger people perhaps thought that seemed a bit over the top. I have to admit I thought it seemed a bit excessive as well since I work with power tools- I think in this instance a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I know that even using a pretty heavy drill for a short period I don't experience any side effects and so I dismiss the idea that such light vibrations as those recieved from a knitting needle could cause side effects.
Obviously though in this instance your knowledge in that particular field is more complete than ours. You also seem to have been checking the forum but not commenting recently to avoid any confrontations and so perhaps that subconciously when reading posts in response to you, you were already preparing yourself for a disagreement. Therefore when people expressed disbelief at you suggesting what sounded to most people who have knowledge of white finger (but not the extensive knowledge you seem to have) as an over the top solution, you were perhaps on the defensive where normally you would have explained your reasons as you then went on to do.
I hope you realise no one was having I go ( I don't think), I think you make our discussions more interesting since otherwise it can sometimes be a bunch of people expressing the same opinion but using different words :p

Hiya Gill :)

Thanks for your kind comments; I don't claim to be a true expert in matters of VWF (as most especially medical aspects of it), but I've done a fair few HAV assessments at the front end, plus the subsequent calcs, analysis and reporting to the extent of simply quantifying exposure and mean risk. :)

Thanks also for your very kind closing comments. Although there are many lovely people here, yourself among them, and doubtless I don't do myself many favours at times either, but I don't think a return would be either very wise or welcome. I just thought that this particular matter warranted special attention; for my part I am very pleased and appreciative of the outcome. Take care. :)

Let's go back to WOS.

I was wondering if people (Cap'n Caveman, Doc G, Kalmar, Nemmie (oh, and Mali for suggesting lupus :p ) in particular) would mind me pulling a few lines out of their posts to put on my blog as various theories. I will thank ye all.

Also, to update you: I have been knitting with my usual wooden and nickel-plated needles, and they are both fine. I tried yesterday with the ones that were causing the trouble, and they are still causing the same issues. I also tried with some of the new acrylic needles but at a much larger (9mm) diameter. The flexibility is lost because of the thickness of the needle giving it greater sturdiness. They are just as grabby and friction still causes the stitches to stick, but the vibrations are not amplified by the flexibility of the needles, so whilst I still find them difficult to work with, they are not causing the same problems as the 3.5mm gauge needles.

Also, I would again like to thank you all for your help and for taking the time to think about this for me. It actually means a great deal to me. :luv:
