The pub owner was seen last night leaving the scene clutching something called an 'in-sewer-ants polly sea'.

When I first read that book I swear it took me until the very end to work out what that had actually meant.

I might be going mad, but I'm certain that for the first couple of minutes that story was reporting a car bomb.

I'm amazed that the BBC refrained from adding those weasel words "the police haven't yet ruled out terrorist involvement", when the Beeb know full well that's because it hasn't yet been ruled in.

It says 'car park' anyway.

Could have been one of those tigers, I suppose.

A strange time to set one off if set to kill. That's what makes me think it's a gas explosion, unless the hypothetical terrorists were too worried about being rumbled before using it as in the Bristol case.

Hope it isn't severe, and isn't terrorists. I worked in Leeds for four years, including filling in work in Burley library around the time the London bombers would have frequented it. I'd hate for any race violence to kick off over there over this. :(

Don't you just hate that cold-gut-stomach thrill of a breaking news? (Unless it's 'Breaking News!: Obscure Commons Motion defeated' - that mischevious BBC.)

They seem to be saying now that the pub was closed down and boarded up and that it was maybe just a gas explosion, some injured but they walked themselves to A&E which is across the road.

Let's poke fun at eyewitness "Lucy Murgatroyd". Her name sounds like some sort of cyborg creation or something.

More than likely. A gas explosion can take out a whole building very easily.

Of course, you can bet News 24 is running rolling sensationalist coverage.

It's in Leeds as well so it's a shame Kevin Boquet has retired. "Todays bad smell is gas".

I think they need Ted Maul on the scene to sensationalise things a bit.

I hope nobody was badly hurt.

She probably gets a lot of this, but I don't know her so it's okay.

Police have described CAMRA's smuggling in of weapons-grade real ale into Leeds pubs as "a keg waiting to go off."

sorry

This is what happens when you stand around the doorways of pubs, smoking cigarettes. I blame the smoking ban.

It's just taken me an hour to get a picture of the bad smell man. But, finally.....

When this sort of thing happens, people used to say "Oh, what a terrible accident, probably", I'm sure of it.

I'm pretty sure that a gas explosion which demolished a whole building would always have attracted at least some attention from officialdom.

In Leeds, pre-Muslims inventing terrorism, they'd have suspected arson.

Or Harry Gration.

Yeah, but even about 10 years ago, everyone would have assumed (a) accident, then (b) arson/insurance scam. It wouldn't be an instant "OMG TRRRSTS?"

But it doesn't say anything about terrorists in your original quote. I thought you were saying that calling in gas officials was some sort of panicky overreaction.

I actually stuck News 24 on via the iPlayer thing because I was curious about how it would be handled. As it turned out there was no constant coverage and no mention that I heard of bombs or terrorists. Then again it wasn't London so it didn't really matter and besides they probably couldn't get a camera there soon enough to show thrilling live footage of the side of some police vans shot from a quarter of a mile away.
