Also, what happened to your ultra-hardline "no braineating, no zombie" stance?

I'm ultra-hard. It's flesheating, anyway. Brain eating only became popular post Dan Bannon's Return of the Living Dead.

Zombies.

Look, the Haitian and West coast African zombies weren't dead were they? They were suffering from the effects of a fish-based poison that made them what they were and they were called zombies. Zombies doesn't have to mean dead, in fact before EC Comics and Romero came along with the 'dead zombie' they were seen as the 'living dead'. As in alive-but-seemingly-dead. Tch.

Anyway, lets not get into all that again.

You're missing an important point here, Pete. Zombies don't run, even Haitian ones.

Not zombies.

Why wouldn't zombies run? They have the same physiological aspects as a human, and we can run.

Here's the thing. If I've got a shotgun, and something's coming at me that looks like a zombie, I'm gonna shoot it's face off. The place for zoological discussion is once the apocalypse has been averted.

Simon Pegg (I think it was him) did a great article about the bastardisation of zombies, I'll see if I can find it.

Perhaps he should have kept running zombies out of his films, then. The very first zombie he put on film ran (among others), and used tools.

Funny, when I read it I though Simon Pegg was talking shit about a subject he was a bit fuzzy on, just because he was in a film about it. I'm waiting for him to tell us why Star Fleet engineers have to have a bad Scottish accent.

Apart from they can't respire and none of their internal organs function, of course.

Grim...: Simon Pegg wrote SotD, he didn't just star in it. He's a big zombie film fan (and all round horror/sci-fi nerd).

That was a fast shamble. Watch it again, I've seen folk with wooden legs run better.

Anyway back to Mr Pegg, it summed up my feelings on the matter. Slow zombies are scary because of the slow, emotionless inevitability of your demise. Running zombies are a cheap thrill, like jumping out a cupboard at someone, they seem angry.

Angry [brain]deid folk/corpses? GTFF.

You say that, but then practically every shambling zombie film involves people dying when they're caught unawares by sudden zombies. They may not be running at people, but they're thrusting arms up through floorboards, or hiding behind a sofa.

Yup, fast zombies are far too excitable for that sort of behaviour.

MY idea of a proper Zombie is a reanimated corpse driven by an unthinking hunger to feed on the living, that moves in an slow shambolic manner.

All other 'Zombies' are no less entertaining though, eg Evil Dead's Deadites, 28 Days later's Infected, Resident Evil's T-Virus test subjects etc. etc.

Stop falling out about the undead/redead/halfdead x

I just wish they'd inject a little romance into the Zombie scene, like how they gotten a bunch of it in Twilight to help the Vamps.

I also don't get how there can be so many zombies. Accepted 'facts' about zombies:
1) To kill a zombie, destroy its brain.
2) Zombies eat brains.

How, therefore, can the zombie population increase if they eat the thing that kills them?

Zombies eat all flesh indiscriminately - not just brains. If someone survives a zombie attack with a scratch or wound, they will expire and turn.

Generally it's bites only that cause the infection. Unless the wounding is severe enough to be fatal, in which cause you're screwed once again :nerd:

This just in - Romero's new effort is fucking garbage. I didn't think he could top the clueless mess that was Diary, but he's actually managed to make something actively, insultingly awful. Triply so if you're Irish, or have ever even heard an Irish person talk. He's always had a weakness for those characters (hallo, Day's kinda likeable chopper pilot and that fella who pops up for five minutes in LOTD), but this is just, hnngh.

I started reading 'The Living Dead' compilation book recently that was recommended by Morte (and others).

Only a few stories in so far, some aren't as entertaining for me as others* but I thought the first one was great (This Year's Class Picture - Dan Simmons).

Thanks again for the recommendation.

Hmmm. Carefully chosen PR still in being-good non-shocker. Still, we'll find out in October. The IMDb has the cast list if you haven't seen it yet. You know it's the guy from This Life and Teachers as Rick, right?

So, Land of the Dead, then. If the Zombies all rise from the dead automatically now in Romero's world, whether or not they got bit, then how come they permanently die if you do their brains? It makes no fucking sense. What caused all the non-zombie-killed corpses to get up in the first place? Dead telepathy? Romero jumped the bloody shark with that film, seriously.

Romero's got two great films in Night and Dawn, and then it rapidly becomes clear that beyond his one great idea - zombie invasion done realistically with non-professional actors for a docu-drama feel - he's a completely ham-fisted bloke with a bizarre fixation in hammering the same point home in every single bloody film.

Also.

"BUT DON'T YOU SEE? WE WERE ALWAYS ZOMBIES. ZOMBIES FOR MUZAK CAPITALISM."
