Man, DoW2 for a tenner is tempting. But I'm in the middle of King's Bounty, I just got Men Of War when it was going mega-cheap on Steam last week and, shamefully, I've barely scratched the surface of Empire Total War yet.

Playing the godly Wizardry 8 again. I can imagine an alternative universe were Wiz8 sold a lot, Sirtech didn't go bankrupt, and Bioware releasing good games. Well, actually i can't.

It's not going to get cheaper, though.

I'm beginning to think a DoW2 topic may be in order.

Last night I met the 4th race in the game... Bloody hell! They're a bit vicious, no?

Trying not to rush through it too quickly, though.

Ditto. Shame the Imperial Guard aren't in it, though. I like facing up to the Unnamable Horrors of the Grim Future with a bunch of cannon-fodder squaddies armed with laser guns that are less powerful than stuff that Deal Extreme would sell you.

When they add the in some inevitable expansion pack we'll have to have a two player game. Bagsies me the Unnamable Horrors of the Grim Future.

To make it run at full everything faster. More frames than you can possibly detect per second!

Well not really, you earlier said that PC gaming is increasingly about games from indie developers which don't really need these monster 'rigs'. You also said that most of the big budget games are crappy ports from consoles. So really isn't this just a pure obsession a bit like endlessly modifying cars to make them faster except without the fun of getting to drive a fast car?

What's that got to do with anything? I just said that it was already possible to run crysis maxed out. Yes, it's not that i care much about it. I'm playing Wizardry 8

That's rubbish. There a big noticeable difference between 40 and 60. In fact, i find the 30fps that is the norm in consoles unplayable for action games. 60fps all the way for me, even if i have to play with quake 1-like graphics.

Oooh, I'm gonna be re-joining this club in a few days! Has anyone played the PC version of Halo 2 with 'cheevs? Will it work on Windows 7? Is the Games for Windows Live thing good? I like the idea of contributing to my gamerscore on PC, instead of wasting my time on non-'cheev games and that.

edit: And where's DoW2 a tenner? It's 30 biff on Amazon still!

I am sensing the PC gaming phoenix is rising from the ashes on BETEO.

Who would want to play Crysis anyway? Good technology showcase not a great game.

But for those prepared to step away from their 360s there is a bright future ahead, with the Windows live system and Steam providing a safe platform for software houses to release their wares and PC technology continuing to evolve way past the abilities of the much loved 360, the future is looking bright at last.

Still not sure what the point in achievements is but I do find myself trying to get them. Odd.

It's listed on the back of the box. "Can be played on a 360 pad" is a certification requirement for GfWL. I bet it's fucking awful though.

Better than most, I suspect - with a fixed maximum of 4 squads cycling through them would be a much easier prospect than trying to do the same thing in DoW1, for example.

Quick question: if they had to make pad configs for DoW2 to certify it for GfWL, why haven't they released it for the 360?

It's a very CPU hungry game, but that's no real excuse. No market?

Halo Wars has proved that RTS games can be successful on a console, but how much of that is down to IP and not the genre... although, there must be plenty of Warhammer nerds with 360s.

The pad controls are probably an abomination though, plus no market I reckon (did Halo Wars sell well? I know C&C didn't, and they both had stronger franchises behind them than Warhammer does).

Battle March's 360 controls are very very complicated. I played the tutorial for an hour or so, went to bed and by the morning I'd forgotten it all.

Halo Wars was bad, though. It took RTSs back about ten years.
