Quick note: GTA IV is crippled by many things.

Spyware isn't one of them.

I did a tweak guide for Company of Heroes, it's around somewhere online I'm sure. I'll try digging it out, as its worth reading. There are several settings that MASSIVELY affect FPS on CoH. Trees are one, shadows another. Also it becomes way more smooth a couple of patches in.

Version is 2.600

Literally everything is on its minimum setting in the graphics menu.

The hardware is obviously capable of full settings at 1440x900(Demo proved this) so I'm a little confused.

Hmm, I'm fairly baffled then. I do know there WAS a performance hit when they patched it to be compatible when Opposing Fronts came out, because they added extra effects and stuff. Enough to make it look slightly nicer but knock a nasty chunk off the frame rate. The latest patch was supposed to have fixed that though.

You might want to reinstall and patch to 1.43, that's a balanced, stable, faster-performance, all round lovely patch and everyone seems to agree.

RE: Dawn of War 2.

Eurogamer gave it 8/10. From what I've played I really like it, but I'll admit I've only played a couple of hours and only on the single player mode. But it does seem like my kind of RTS - fewer units, and overall less defensive in terms of map defense.

If there's anyone out there who's played it more, it'd be better to listen to them. Until I either sort out my desktops connectivity problem or my laptops refusal to play the full game at a sensible frame rate, I can only go on first impressions which are very good. (Or, of course, you could get the demo off steam and try that)

DoW2, I've only done the first few maps, but I like it. Grim... has played a lot more I think. The RPG elements I think work really well -- it's perhaps better compared to Diablo than anything else.

Well, with a certain amount of playing with computer settings (Most notably a few settings in the NVidia control panel) I do seem to have scrapped together a fair amount of performance. Both games now much, much better, but still not as good as the demos.

For a tenner from Play, you would be mental to refuse it. Or have a Mac. Actually my first statement fits that scenario too.

And if there are any PC gamers out there who still don't have Trials 2 : Second Edition, or, haven't even played the completely free demo, free of DRM and all that shit then you deserve to be hunted down and slapped with a large rotten kipper.

Further play on DoW2 (but without performance issues):

:) :luv:

Certainly worth £10 in my book.

I ("borrowed mine from my dad" -Ed.) and so immediately had Rush Hour. It's not quite proper 3D - I think all the stuff has to be built as proper 3D objects but it's not like the super swooshy 3D that suggests it would be.

At the same time, anyone remember the preview of Simcity 3? Full 3D! Watch crimes as they happen! Wow! And after that... nothing, and then Simcity 3000 was revealed as just nicer 2D in the end (and not very good)

I remember when TobyHiggins, TheEgg and several others all convened to have a LAN party. All our PCs hooked up together, let's rock.

We spent the entire afternoon patching and updating and installing the various mods and such that enabled our various copies of Unreal Tournament, Half-Life and Quake 3 to talk to each other. I think in about seven hours we played for maybe one and a half.

If we'd just switched the Xbox on we could have had seven hours of Halo.

Partly though, we could have been a lot more organised and done that in advance. And partly, Xbox Live isn't an always-working playground either. I've lost count of the number of times someone's voice doesn't work, or parties drop out, or there's voice echoes, or the host ends the CoD4 match after 15 seconds, or we lose people when going into the game lobby in CoD4, etc etc.

Four player split screen is, which is what playing Halo in those days would have involved.

My PCs have a minimum of two screens each, and over the years I've had three and even (briefly) four. Why on earth would I settle for 1/4 of standard def? Ever? 360x288, for pity's sake! My iPhone has more pixels than that!

Yup. I hate to think how many hours I logged on Goldeneye through university - it brought everyone together, even girls who didn't like any other games would have a laugh with Slappers Only or Rocket Launchers.

Sure. But is it as good as a system link? No way.

Aside: With the amount of co-op you do (and the amount you complain about the lack of split-screen), have you ever considered just getting another XBox? Oh wait, then you need two copies of the game...

My point is, my experience as a user of Live isn't all the everything's-wonderful picture it's often painted as. Whereas reinstalling Windows, Steam, and a number of computer games on my PC last week wasn't as hard as it's often painted as.
