Short of there being some new flexible screen being made out of some unheard of tough plastic I’m struggling to see how these won’t look like they’ve been attacked with a belt sander after a few months of normal usage.

I can't help but think they're a solution to a problem that doesn't really exist, but then I thought the same thing about Face ID and now I wouldn't go back to Touch ID if you paid me.

How come? I find Touch ID more reliable than Face ID. The only time Touch ID fails on me is when I’m just out of the bath. Apple’s Face ID misses me about 30% of the time.

The only time I've ever had Face ID not work is when I'm wearing sunglasses, or when I'm lying in bed and my face is half smooshed into a pillow.

Touch ID wasn't particularly unreliable either, to be fair though - it did "miss" on more occasions though, I think I've just got weirdly sweaty/oily fingers ;)

Face ID is noticeably much quicker than Touch ID ever was - that might be simply because I'm comparing a more powerful XR to my old 8 though.

Depends on the glasses. They have to let through a specific wavelength of IR light that the sensor uses. Some do, some don't.

Pro tip - take off your glasses at automated passport scanners for this very reason.

Amazing scenes.

I wonder if the people who designed this thing have ever had a mobile phone before.

It has turned out to be splendid.

The lack of wireless charging is a non-issue as this is a phone that you can't kill in a day, even if it's running as a wireless hotspot for 7-8 hours during the day. It'll be on its last legs by bedtime, but it'll make it.

The deficiencies of the always on screen have been mitigated by me getting a smartwatch, and a smartwatch has turned out to be one of my favourite gizmos of the last few years.

The stupid USB-C headphones are stupid because I lost them and haven't bothered to replace them.

Beyond that it's basically just a very nice smartphone, with an exceptional camera that delivers spookily good results in low light.

Oh yes it's shiny and slippery as fuck so when it slid off the kitchen table onto the floor on my first day of ownership, I decided to start using the supplied gel case.

It's behaved itself impeccably with the various Bluetooth pairings it has, always connecting to the car and my smartwatch properly, and I used it to unlock my Chromebook via Bluetooth when I still had a Chromebook. (That was cool functionality that I miss now I've got a Windows 10 laptop.)

Obviously being by HUAWEI I get Chinese Hackers taking money out of my bank account all the time and stealing my data, but that's a small price to pay for such fine phone.

Overall, great phone, would recommend.

Cheers! Though I've now just realised I was looking at an offer for what I thought was a Mate Pro 20 but is actually a P20 Pro, so not as excellent an offer as I'd thought.

Bloody confusing, these phones.

Yes it is! I just thought you had t'other, which I knew was historically astronomically expensive so thought I'd got an excellent deal.

Nor does that mean I've found a bad deal for the P20 Pro and it's not worth considering.

I will report back in 6 months for my periodic mobile phone purchasing contemplations.

I've been playing with using the voice assistants on my S9 and 'Hey Google' works pretty well, except it can't unlock the phone.

So now I use 'Hi Bixby' to unlock the phone, then wait til that goes away before saying 'hey google' it's both impressive tech and jarringly clunky at the same time.

Bixby can control some of the phone systems (eg change brightness, power/battery saving mode, lock the phone, toggle wifi/bluetooth) that the Google Assistant can't - is that a Samsung thing? Is Google Assistant more capable on a Pixels?

Wait, Bixby lets you unlock a phone by just asking it to? What am I missing here that means that's not a security nightmare?

Yes, fully unlocked and open. I don't think this is enabled by default, and seem to recall the phone did show a little warning when setting this up, saying that it's the very lowest security (along with I guess the 'smart lock' that can keep the phone unlocked in certain areas or when certain devices are nearby).

I genuinely don't know how good voice recognition is at distinguishing between people, and I'd imagine a recording would fool it easily into unlocking - but if someone was going to go to that effort they'd probably find a way to unlock my phone by a number of other methods anyway - my son for example knows that he can hold the phone up to my face to unlock it through face recognition. I guess there's quite a range of where we'd all draw the line when it comes to the trade off between security and convenience, and at the moment I'm quite keen to yell at my phone to start timers/navigate to somewhere/play music.

I do see what you mean though, it's potentially really easy to unlock a device that has a lot of naked pictures personal info on.

Fans of tediousness will be pleased to hear I've finally plumped for a new phone. Mate 20 on EE, at a not too shabby £31 per month.

Found a great deal on the P20 (£22, deal fans) but the data was a mite low.

Will let you know what my life looks like once the Chinese hackers have taken it over.

I've found the gel case that came with it in the box is fine.

Mine hasn't fallen several feet onto a hard kitchen floor a single time since I put it on!

Out of the box I found a few things annoying about the phone, if you Google shit like '10 things to do with your new P20 Pro' you might find a couple of useful titbits. Turning on 'dark mode' was a nice one, as I recall.

Will compare and contrast.

Yeah I'll be keen to remove as much unnecessary howai guff from the interface as possible.

Maybe you didn't look in the box properly.

Mine had a screen protector on it too, which I took off because I don't like them.

The closest thing I can think of is my surprise that my OnePlus 5T came with a screen protector, which started to peel off at one edge and I couldn't work out what was going on (because I didn't expect it to have a screen protector).

I had the same phone. There was no screen protector. It was the bit of plastic they leave over the screen for shipping. It had a pull tab!

Brilliantly Google maps, at least when Android auto is running, does a little confused pause before pronouncing Dr as 'Doctor'. Unfortunately it doesn't go so far as to use questioning intonation.

"Hey Google, give me directions to A Made Up Drive"
"Ok! A Made Up... Doctor is some hours and minutes away"

I am enjoying my Howai P20 Pro. It's amazing using such a snappy phone. My old S7 feels impossibly laggy now (also very diddy).

However, overnight an update slunk in that changed the 'app switch' UX to something more akin to iOS (in-use apps laid out horizontally, flick up to close). I much preferred the previous UX (apps laid out vertically, just tap the one you want to switch to).

I'm finding the new approach doesn't actually let me click in to another app from the side, I have to scroll it to the centre then tap into it. And I can see fewer apps to switch to.

Is this something I can revert?

Also, I am assuming this is Android-wide and not Howai specific.

Yes it did that to mine as well. It annoyed me a bit, but not enough to, y'know, actually do anything about it.

Sorry, I realise that doesn't help very much. But someone else shares your pain!
