You do know that you can use one authenticator to scan the barcode of most things even if they recommend a proprietary authenticator, right? E.g. You can also put them into some password managers and get them to sync across devices. 1Password offers this, for example, and when I get around to it I'm going to move all my codegens there except probably my primary Google account one. Not sure if LastPass does the same. |

Yep. Although the QR code that you scan contains the various keys that allow it to work, so I wouldn't trust an app that isn't from a well-respected brand. All the protocol does is do some maths based around time, combined with the key, to generate a 6 digit number. Read more-me-do |

Evie is my favourite of the third party launchers. Although with G6, I'm still using the stock launcher. A general Android question though - is it possible to prevent the fingerprint sensor from unlocking the phone? There's an option to stop it locking, but not unlocking. From what I've read, the general answer seems to be 'remove all saved fingerprints', but that would remove the functionality altogether and I want to use it, but just for apps that support it. |

No, she explicitly said she didn't want a new phone. So we've had the contract renewal available for a little while now. Because MT's pricing structure is so pernicious, it makes no sense NOT to get a handset on contract, as their SIM-only contract prices are stupid, and PAYG is for teenagers with all that 'topping up' bollocks which would be a downgrade for Mrs Hearthly if she had to do it. I asked again if she at least wanted to go and have a look at the phones she could choose from, and she said no, she likes the phone she has. Also, she has small hands so the march towards larger smartphones has totally left her cold. The only phone that'd really suit her from MT's books is the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact, which is pretty much just an iteration of the phone she's already got (Xperia Z5). Also, she's spent quite a while getting her current phone exactly as she wants it, and doesn't want the hassle of switching to a different handset. (Having spent most of last night trying to get my new phone to effectively mirror what the S7 did, I can see her point.) She's not into tech for tech's sake, she simply wants it to perform its functions correctly and without fuss, so 'new shinies' has no appeal to her whatsoever. (If anything quite the opposite, because things are inevitably a bit different and there's a learning curve and so on.) So in the end I got the P20 Pro just 'because', really. |

The HUAWEI P20 PRO has an always-on screen, just like my S7 does. What it DOESN'T do, is display notifications on the always-on screen, so whereas the S7 puts a little icon on the always-on screen when I have a Facebook message, or a WhatsApp message, or whatever - the £700 P20 Pro doesn't have this functionality at all. Amazing scenes. I wonder if the people who designed this thing have ever had a mobile phone before. |

There have been a couple of issues where remote code execution would potentially be able to leak passwords from browser extensions but other password managers have had similar issues. Autofilling passwords/data (from any password manager) has also been called into question because it was theoretically possible to autofill hidden fields that the user wasn't aware of but you can turn this off. None of this is at all related to the auth code generation though. I only mentioned LastPass because it's what I personally use. As you already have the Google authenticator you could use that, for example, for all of your other accounts. I guess(?) there's a very small risk of an update breaking the app, but I have been using LastPass (and prior to that Google's authenticator) for as long as I can remember and never had an issue. |
