Only 20% of all things.

Trying to think of some of the worst covers. Amstrad Action had some weak ones when the money ran out. I guess that's kind of excusable though.

At least none of them say boldly on the front cover how many pages are in the magazine.
I'm interested in how many out of the 132 were adverts of some description and how many were actual content.

I remember getting a hold of some US magazines back in the late 8-bit / early 16-bit days and being amazed at the size of them until you realise that of the few hundred pages easily 85% were adverts.

I don't think those AA's screaming "24 PAGES" on the cover would help sales. :DD

"Personal Computer World" used to be the size of a couple of house bricks*, and finding content used to be really tricky.

* I was very small when Dad used to bring them home from work, so this might be an exaggeration.

I remember someone writing to AA moaning about the page count compared to Amiga Format and AA pointing out that although AF had 100 more pages than AA, AA only in fact had about 20% less actual editorial content.

Meanwhile genius or deeply disturbing?

To be fair, Julian had an 80's haircut. ('Linda Barker' - Ed) was a 90's haircut.

Still holds its value, that issue. Same as the Unclear User issue of Crash. Number 19 IIRC.

I guess the reduced circulation combined with the chances of finding an unsoiled copy makes it somewhat valuable.

Another new issue of Retro Gamer in the post. That's it, I'm really making the effort to cancel my subscription now. Nothing worth reading in it at all. Crappest possible article topics too: PC games, 'the history of' platform games, the PlayStation 2. Really scraping the barrel in terms of content, then there's the issue it'd declining quality of presentation and so on. Feels like one of those 8-bit or 16-bit magazines at the end of their lives, running out of energy and possible content, but without having the creativity of say Amiga Power in its final year fill the gaps in an entertaining way. I won't be missing anything not reading RG, and TBH I've recycled the last several issues after a single brief reading anyway. (Last proper good issue was the one the Skool Daze cover, IMO.)

I only buy it if I go on holiday now. The mag is stuck in a major rut, it's like Groundhog day.

The mag has already surpassed the number of issues of many of the 8 bit mags like YS, Crash and Zzap which died off in their 90's. It's fast approaching the 117 of Amstrad Action and the 134 of Sinclair User. RG has 1 more issue a year but all of those magazines changed vastly during their lives. They also turned over editors, writer and columnists at an unbelievable rate. Fresh talent brings fresh ideas and a new broom always sweeps clean!

Author:  Anonymous X [ Mon Mar 25, 2013 1:44 ]
Post subject:  Re: Gaming Magazines

True! IMO there's also the problems of RG maybe running out of suitably 'retro' games to cover which can be properly researched, and the falling production values.

I recommend buying Retro Fusion http://www.retrofusion.me.uk/ . Fun mag, covers stuff like toys as well. If they hadn't've (yes, had't've) been fucked over by Gamestation they'd easily be as big as Retro Gamer now.

Brilliant idea! We should start our own retro magazine... We can call it "Retro Power" and write about Zelda one month and Sonic the next. Every quarter we could do a feature on Mario games and include the fact that he first appeared in Donkey Kong as Jumpman.

People will be all over that! They'll love it!

All you need to do is to take a base year (1995, say), then each month reprint a multi-format magazine from that time changing everything into the past tense.

Please scan a picture of Bruno Brookes + Jakki Brambles holding Amigas with shit eating corporate grins. None of my AF's have these adverts in but I know they existed.

I know one of the companies was Indie-Direct, the other may have began with "C".

I remember that issue too! My parents and uncle played the Lemmings demo a lot that Christmas. So much so, they couldn't be bothered with the full game when it eventually arrived. I suspect that was common.

First Amiga magazine I had was issue 6 of AF, which I sadly no longer have. Still have 10 and 12 in my bookcase, just about readable still. Unfortunately AMR only has scans of the games reviews and not the rest of the magazine. I have strong memories still of reading that issue, about a week before my dad bought a Batman Pack, and just pouring over all the screenshots of games with proper colour graphics, mesmerised.
