I quite enjoy taking all the rubbish we generate that isn't collected to the tip. It's a nice drive, there's rarely a queue, the staff are friendly and it's actually the next council over so I'm breaking the rules doing so. Stick it to the man!

That is the exact opposite of my experience of the tip.

Best one was finding two perfectly good folding side tables in the wood skip! #Yoink #ScrubberKid

Really? No news about bins since June?

With the amount of parcels I get delivered, I easily fill my recycling box every week, so I've been tempted to ask for another one as they're free. However, I then read that the council are thinking of changing from boxes to bags which seems a bit crap as the boxes are good for stacking and they're sturdier in bad weather.

End of exciting bin update.

I found this to be much better as it is unlimited bags. I suppose it's alright if you have somewhere to store them though. We have two recycling wheelie bins now instead.

I need to get rid of a general waste bin as the last owners here had two, and get a second recycling bin instead.

The problem is that you can’t ring or email the council, it’s all done via an online portal, and there’s no option for it.

Recycling bins are subsidised* here so I could get another one and post it to you.

*Which is useful as I now have three so one is usually empty to leave a parcel in, or I could get another. And another.

Spray the general waste bin the colour of a recycling bin.

I renewed my garden-waste collection subscription today. £52 a year, which I reckon I use no more than 5 times over 12 months. Hard to justify. But I can't be bothered cramming the car with mulch and tree branches.

It's no better since they refurbed it a couple of years ago. Longley Lane is much better, if only because you don't end up queueing on the road to just get on site, like you often have to do at Stretford.

Our bin lorries have a motorised arm that pops out, grabs the bin, lifts and tips it into the back of the truck and then returns the bin back to the kerb, so there's only the need for one driver and no bin men.

Someone told me the arm can sense the weight and notify the driver if it's too heavy (and this can be recorded against the property number, and the council will tell us off if we keep overloading them) but I'm not sure how much of that, if any, is really true; although I suppose there must be some upper limit above which the arm wouldn't be able to lift.

Why are bins labelled "Litter"? It's only litter if it's not on bin, right?

Cos they're bins for the litter, right? Once inside does it become refuse?

If you had a food bin it'd be labelled "food" but once inside the food would still become refuse?

When I was a student I went to Preston with some friends, and we popped in to see one of their old college mates, who I didn’t know. We were about to head out to the shops, but just before we got to the door he called out ‘hold on’ and started running the blades of two knives frantically together in the flame of the electric stove. One of my friends asked what he was doing. He started trying to breathe in the ‘fumes’ and looked around with wild eyes and said ‘hot kniiiiiivessss’.

I didn’t like him very much.

Oh... so he didn’t make this up of his own accord?

Mind actually blown. I had always assumed it was something that he (and maybe his mates?) had made up.

He seemed kind of stupid, I wouldn’t totally dismiss the idea that for him it was just the knives :D But... if someone had even a little bit of cannabis why would they rub it between two knives rather than just smoke it?

Apparently the knives are heated up on a cooker to get them red hot first.

If he was rubbing them together he was a fucking idiot.

I'd imagine.

The only reason I know of hot knives is the episode of Peep Show set at Christmas. Sheltered life, me.

When I was an Hippy wannabe in the 70's, there was a rumour going round that you could scrape the stuff off the inside of banana skins and roast it on an open flame, whence it would magically become a mind altering substance if you smoked it in a spliff. Some of my chums were going to try it, but for some reason tried to heat it on a cutlery knife shoved into the elements of a gas fire in their flat. They must have dropped three skinfulls in the fire before managing to extract a baked block.

It didn't seem to have the effect they desired, and the flat smelled of burned banana for several days afterwards.
