Wait, what? You pay for your bins to be emptied? Beyond what's in your rates or council tax or whatever you lot have, I mean.

Bin outrage all over the local Facebook page for the last couple of months

The annual cost of a brown (garden waste) bin has risen from £40 to £50 a 20% increase

As a percentage, its a piss take increase, but it's £10 more for them to take my garden stuff away, the other choice is to buy small crap waste bags @£1 each

I just paid... for 2 bins I might add :p

I pay a tidy 52 per year. Yet I do so little gardening it probably gets collected 6 times a year. I don't know what my point is, other than, perhaps, that I'm an idiot.

It caused great upset when Bradford MDC started charging to cart garden waste away as it was seen as the more affluent suburbs funding the inner city and yet getting fewer services in return in comparison.

Yeah, Stroud district council does that too. Slightly irritating that it's not free, particularly as we're then giving them free compost as well. :)

£40 a year doesn't seem like much though, really, for the convenience of it. We have to go to the local civic amenity site to dump that stuff, it is less than 2 minutes away so it's not exactly a hardship.

When we took out hedges down, which were 3m high and over 2m wide, and about 25m long, the men at the amenity site said it was too much because we filled one of their big bins on our own. We hired a big-hook skip after that to finish off! Was much easier.

Yes, Cameron's government stopped council tax increases when they came into power, so the councils went looking for what they could charge extra for.

Prior to this I just had to buy the bin for a one-off £35 charge and they collected it.

There are all sorts of rules as to what you can put in as well, no bamboo and small branches etc. I always make sure I have grass cuttings to put on the top and just put whatever comes out of my garden in there.

You can't put bamboo in the bin because it's strong enough to stop the lorry from being able to compress properly.

Is it not because it's one of those problem plants that can spread everywhere so it can't be used for compost etc?

Old Ma Squirt was something to do with the local council's Japanese Knotweed Task Force. They had to get proper people in to excavate, cart the whole lot off and incinerate it. Must have cost a bomb.

Trick with Ivy is to kill its roots. Chop it good wherever it touches the ground. Then let it die slowly. In pain.

My mum, in her infinite wisdom, spotted some Japanese Knotweed once on a roundabout, decided she liked the "nice thick bamboo" and dug some up and planted it in her garden.

Hey, almost exactly a year!

I hate bamboo even more now.

In bin news, the council's switch to alternating/fortnightly collections took effect. Everyone got wheelie bins to help keep smells and animal attacks under control, except for people like us where that's too hard so we have to continue using the bags.

They haven't actually given us any bags for this year yet though. We ran out of black bags in January and are nearly out of pink ones.

Really earning their exorbitant council tax.

I barely slept last night as I'd filled my green bin with so much soil and bits of rubble, that the thin layer of grass cuttings on top was barely enough to cover it... and it was really heavy!

I felt sure that the collectors wouldn't take it and instead, I'd be faced with the task of distributing it amongst all my smaller bags to take down the tip.

Cut to this morning and they came. Slowly coming down the street, taking everyone else's green bin. I even managed a cheery "Good morning" as I walked past them on the school run. After dropping the girls off, I pretty much ran all the way home like Charlie Bucket with his golden ticket. Eager to see if they'd emptied my bin for me.

And you know what? They did. Perfect.

I love a happy ending.

Blue (cardboard) bin was full when it went out this morning and i had another blue bin's worth of cardboard to go out due to being on holiday recently. A quick scope of the neighbours blue bins revealed I could only sneakily get rid of a quarter of my surplus. Dangerous days.

I feel for you. My council will take away as much cardboard as you can put out. Whether it's in the bag or in a box next to it.

With the amount of parcels I receive, I easily fill my cardboard bin each week (I try to reuse what I can to send stuff out again, but some boxes I get aren't fit for reuse), but the council are planning on changing it to a fortnightly service and using bags instead of bins. Hopefully I can at least put out multiple bags.

Anyway, my green bin is massively heavy today. I'd be very surprised if they take it as it's full of turf and dirt with a small topping of leaves to cover them.

Took out a mixed bag* of recycling today: 1.5 boxes of tins and glass out of a max 3 boxes, 1 completely full blue wheelie bin of cardboard and paper and finally 1/2 green wheelie bin of leaves and guinea pig shite.

I put out my similarly over filled garden waste bin at the start of summer. It took a huge amount of effort to move it and it's not been touched, I suspect they're not going to take it. Considering filing the numbers off then phoning in a complaint.

With the amount of parcels I get delivered, I easily fill my recycling box every week, so I've been tempted to ask for another one as they're free. However, I then read that the council are thinking of changing from boxes to bags which seems a bit crap as the boxes are good for stacking and they're sturdier in bad weather.

End of exciting bin update.

Post subject:  Re: The Bin Thread

I just drove from Golcar to Glossop and got stuck behind a bin wagon somewhere not far from Upperthong. At one point I had to wait on a bend on a steep climb while the wagon driver tried to reverse into a farm entrance. After three goes at it, and clearly with the non-drivers in the cab giving him some stick about his skills, he gave up and drove on. I was still stuck behind for about half a mile, but as I drove past the farm entrance I could see it was a very narrow dirt track drive to the farm house a couple of hundred yards. So the farm bins weren't emptied today, but I really wouldn't like to reverse up that drive in a car, never mind a colossal bin wagon.

Post subject:  Re: The Bin Thread

**Update**

They took it! The bin man opened the lid, looked in it and shook his head and then gave himself a hernia while trying to get it on to the back of the wagon.

But that doesn't matter, it's gone now and has saved me a trip to the tip.
