Aaaah; it was sideways on.

Longest ride I did was about 70 miles in about 5 hours on this dreadful trail; all my friends were on mountain bikes and there was me with my cyclocross bike and spd pedals. There were some bits that we were next to this VERY green pond and I unclipped to make sure I could jump to freedom.

Did you get yourself some humourous tan lines?

Hahaha!

When I did my cycle; the shorts on my right leg had folded up slightly and I didn't realise until we'd got to the destination so my tan lines were lopsided for weeks.

I don't even remember the last time I road a BMX, a number of years ago for definite.

You can get MTB shorts that are padded with panel pockets if you don’t want to wear a bib.

I do carry a back pack. I have two bottles and a motorcycle lock. If I am just going somewhere close I put the lock around my neck haha. I've just bought some 700c 35c tubes. I don't fancy getting miles away, then getting a puncture lol. I would imagine that would suck a bit.

In a race, you swap empty bottles for full ones

On the mtb I wear bib shorts with shorts over them.

it’s only a suggestion! You can get 3-4l reservoirs and you can carry spares for fixing your bike on the way. Mind you, I do MTB’ing not road racing

One of my regular rides. It's roughly 3 miles out, stop for a coffee, ride back. I start out in Aldwick and head through Bognor Regis into Felpham. Past the pier and all that. It's pretty flat here (thank god) and that path goes for about 9 miles (hence the bigger bike). The only problem is when you turn around you have the wind in your face, so the 3 miles back is a real workout.

I have to use shims as the bike has a very strange size stem. So I added a dob of glue to hold them in place so I can mount it without needing four hands.

Still need the front brake (not arrived yet) but have everything else. Hopefully it is what I missed over the weekend so should come in the morning :)

I am so lucky tbh. One cycle path goes about 2/3 mile one way to a lovely little oasis on boards that sells coffee etc. Then the other direction goes for 9 miles or so. However, they are currently building a 10 mile path that goes all the way to Littlehampton. IDK if I would make it there and back right now, but I can always hop a train home. Local station is only a mile up the road.

You’re only allowed to use a camelback if your tyres are knobbly.

I have an allergy to slicks :D I put them on a mountain bike once (for riding to work) and the bike totally went from underneath me on a fast corner and I slammed.

They are 85 PSI though, so they should roll lovely. I am hoping that the parcel I missed over t'weekend is my front brake. Didn't realise it was illegal to ride bikes without one, so want it on there.

Yeah, by law it's gotta have two brakes.

With a fixie, the back brake is obviously the pedals but you need a front brake to be legal.

Yup that was the incident I read about. I always wondered why, when you buy a really high end BMX, that it came with a killer U brake on the rear and then some £2 POS for the front. Turns out it is illegal to sell a bike in the UK with no brakes, so they find the crappiest brakes they can lay their hands on and literally throw it in the box.

The bike is now finished and ready.

Post subject:  Re: Bikes

Kris - will do for sure.

Mal - I don't get it. Not what you said, but the way things have gone. Late 60s early 70s it was all about racers. Then some one fits slightly wider wheels, knobbly tyres, a pair of straight bars and calls it a "track bike". Then some one welds up their freewheel and all of a sudden we have a "Fixed gear track bike".

In 40 years? we've gone around in a bloody great circle lol. Fixed gear was fun for doing certain types of stunts when I was a kid (like hopping over the frame and riding the cranks with both feet so you go up and down like at a carnival) but they were dangerous then FFS. I rode straight into a bloody wire fence on one.

Taking off the brakes? it's stupid and suicidal. That is why some poor woman lies dead. First thing I did was fit a freewheel.

Oh my dear lord, they should make that illegal :D 9 miles ! with only one stop. Way out was all wind. I knew I was going fast though, because I got to the 3 mile point before I even started to feel anything. Coming back though? lol ! I had the wind neutral and had it up to top speed pretty much all of the way home. It was *awesome* weaving in and out of people and bikes flying along like the clappers :D I thought the gearing was going to be too high, but it more than makes up for that with the gearing to wheel size and then the weight of the bike. It's so light and nimble. I love it. I absolutely love it. Kid done grown up !

Yeah for sure. Very flat here though. I wanted to ride on, but I found out today that the path ends and turns to beach stone path. I mulled over risking it, but with no tubes or pump with me I decided it safer to turn back. God, I could have rode on all day without the wind. It was funny, because on the way there every time I passed an object (like a cafe or a building) it would get really nice and warm. Then back into the cool wind, cold. Warm/cold/warm/cold lol.

I can't wait for them to finish the cycle path to Littlehampton.

lol yup. It is about 4mm each side in the chain stays too :o

The tolerances on these bikes is mind blowing tbh. Like the front brake, that literally jams onto the tyre until you cable it. Then when you do there's like 3mm of clearance all around it.

I guess that is what happened in the past 40 years haha.

Yeah will rest up and have some food, then get out there again tomorrow. Oh yeah another thing that was concerning me.. The pedals ! they're bloody tiny. I figured "just don't look" which worked. Second nature. I had my new helmet on. I tell you what, it makes a huge difference when you buy bikes and accessories ! during winter it all goes on sale for naff all. Snagged this helmet for £20.

Image

Which is nice, because the one I had before was like a BMX German helmet and about three times heavier. Only issue is now my head is burning lol, so I need to get a hanky or something.
