If you're using Instant Ink, then yes, the printer needs to phone home periodically.

Then get a Canon USB powered scanner for £40 ish.

I ditched my scanner by using phone camera + office lens (which is by no means the best app for this). I’ve found that this gives better quality scans than a cheap desktop was producing.

Agree with that. On the rare occasions I’m likely to need a scan, I’m far more likely to use my phone than I am to trek to the scanner. It’s easily good enough for most purposes. In fact I don’t think I’ve even had scanner drivers installed in years. (I do use the scanner/printer as a photocopier though.)

Fair do's, I still prefer them for scanning in my drawings etc. when I want the texture of the paper/card showing too.

I’ve seen Malia’s drawings. I suspect that less, rather than more detail is desirable.

Why don't you do it at work on the office machines? Then it's like you're getting paid to do it, plus free paper too, which was also my rationale for when I used to try and save taking a dump for business hours.

Oh, different from this, tge other day I saw there are now printers available that you don’t buy cartridges for but just refill big ink tanks from ink bottles, and it’s supposed to be very cost effective. Has anyone heard of or bought one of those?

Found them: they’re called Epson Eco Tank printers.

Buy a laser and stop thinking about printers ever again...

If I were going to buy a printer I probably would get a laser one. I wasn’t shopping for one (have no room to put one) just saw someone talking about them and it looked interesting. I wondered how the print heads performed if you didn’t change them.

You can make a case for either laser or inkjet depending on your duty cycle, what you tend to print, what features you value and so on.

However, the Eco Tanks/Instant Ink eliminate one of the main complaints about inkjets - namely that the ink is scandalously expensive.

Instant Ink is brilliant for us, because we print quite a lot, including lots of full colour graphics heavy stuff (which inkjets tend to be better at), the printer has got the extra features of an All-In-One, and everything about it is quick and snappy.

I signed up for instant ink (which I should have probably asked for a referral code for... Pah)

Anyway, I occasionally have to print a fair bit for my work and when I costed up this compared to going to my local printers, it worked out cheaper and I got a new printer out of it for my game covers and ebay labels... So yeah, instant ink is pretty good if you ask me.

Bumpity bump.

Looking to replace my 3 in 1. It's an inkjet and now £22 to replace just the black cartridge.

Must be wireless with duplex printing.

Any recommendations?

I have the HP 8710 and it's great. Coupled with the instant ink deal they do, it's a great printer.

We spoke about instant ink above and it's quite a good deal so worth signing up for. I'll have a referral code if you do!

It does look very good indeed, but it's £389!

I don't mind investing in a decent peice of kit, but that might be a bit overkill for our needs.

Is it? Oh wow... So it is! I know it's no consolation but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have spent that on it. I think I had a £60 cashback deal too which helped.

Anyway, look out for the instant ink compatible printers. It really is a great deal.

The HP Envy ones are quite good, I have the 5540, but it is a few years old, and has never missed a beat.

Printers are ridiculously expensive at the moment, which I assume is due to lockdown WFH demand.

Yes, this is why I think the ink costs have rocketed up too.

Yep.. I've just checked and I paid £111.99 for that printer in October 2018. Then I had the £60 cash back so it only cost me £51.99.

That's quite the difference.

Wow, I'd have been more than happy to pay that!

Considering just biting the bullet and replacing the cartridge for now until the market changes again.
