Okay, debate time. I am so eager to grab a chipped Saturn for my impending birthday. Preferably a nice Jap one for a change. And including a 50/60Hz switch.

It seems two sites are currently vying for my bank balance's attention. I can choose between the services of ConsolePassion or ConsoleGoods.

As of this typing, there is one chipped Jap console available in the former, and quite a few in the latter. More details to follow. (Bear in mind these prices do not include postage.)

Sega Saturn Modified Japanese White Switchless Console Loose - Sega Saturn (NTSC-J) - £110

The latest addition to our modified Saturn range! This Japanese console is fully modified with our new switchless modification boards - no switches are added to the consoles, no holes drilled, no cosmetic changes to the exterior of the console. You cannot buy these anywhere else in the world - they are exclusive to Console Passion! Everything can be changed by holding the reset switch - 50hz/60Hz setting and Jap/US/UK settings. The internal mod board will cycle though the settings and changes the colour of the LED to let you know which region you are on. Also, a mod chip has been added which allows you to play CDR's. This will allow you to play all the excellent homebrew games that are available for the Saturn. This chip was not fitted by us - the console was bought pre-modified, so please do not ask us questions about it, questions about how to copy games or where to obtain copied games. They will just be ignored. Console Passion does not condone the pirating of games, the mod-chip is included for homebrew games only. This is a Japanese console which runs at 110V and will require a stepdown converter to run in the UK and Europe. We can supply one of these if required. The console has been tested and comes unboxed without any instructions. Comes with control deck, official white game controller, power cable and AV Leads. Please ensure your TV can play an NTSC signal to use this console.

Now, bear in mind CP have a modding service so you could take a console from CG and send it to them if you want to have a 50/60Hz switch added in afterwards, but that's an additional £35 plus postage. Hmmm.

Deep down, what sort of combination do you suggest?

That's really a lot of money to spend. Especially on something that's a bit shit.

Are you really sure you want a Saturn?

MrD = Fail.

I've got one of those Datel Action Replay/region unlocker carts, it lets me play both PAL and NTSC stuff fine without a chip.

I have a mate that might want to sell his black UK one that is modded for backups and has a region free cart. It is in good nick too. I will ask him.

I know last time he mentioned it he was like "I payed so much for that, and I never use it, I might sell it"

If/when I am rich I will have so many cool Sega consoles.

For what it's worth I've bought stuff from ConsolePassion and used their modding service. I've found them to be very helpful and very reliable.

Yup. Run by a nice bloke and when he was at Retro North, his modding service was very popular.

I was just about to say that. Chips for saturns are about as worthless as a chocolate teapot tbh.

Years ago I had a 'flash saturn' (the white one) which I ordered from Hong Kong. It came with a chip that inserted into the lazer cable and tbh it did bugger all worthwhile so I got one of those carts for the back.

I do like the Saturn though. Some good games on there (Athlete Kings is fantastic).
