Shang-Chi started off alright. The bus fight was cool but the guy with the blade up his arm was lazily designed, a bit crap and turns out to be in it a fair bit. The fight on the skyscraper was alright but whoever is directing is doing a poor job of filming the action. Too many cuts (not Taken 3 daft, mind) and silly angles means I can’t see the choreography clearly. All that time and effort and you hide most of the punches… just seems daft to me. Then it slows right now for a thingymebob, some talking and some CG, and then a secret base where the Asian equivalent of Wakanda lies, some boring teaching stuff and a few ambiguous motivational poster comments “stop hiding, it only prolongs the pain” she says … and then an hour in and it’s time to talk about a *yawn* Dark Gate. There’s an hour left so there’s time for a big CG fight at the end I’d imagine when the Dark Gate is opened. Frankly, I couldn’t give a fuck. Oh look there’s some flashbacks with a kid punching some wood and having a martial arts lesson. It’s a good job someone doesn’t do a flashback to my youth when I was hammering my wood.

I'd go with: set up better than the pay-off. This thread, dissecting the bus scene from the POV of a driver, is magnificent. I hope it fixes the entire film for you:

We are half way through Watching Dave Built A Maze. It’s a shame, because it could have been a great concept, but it’s not very well written and the acting is atrocious.

Turns out, if you just watch up until the skyscraper you’ve seen all the best bits. The final fight with the big monster was … confusing. He chucks a ring in this dudes mouth and then descends from the sky and looks like he’s going to dropkick it in the heart but then he wobbles his hips and the thing explodes.

The ten rings are a kind of a crap power up as well.

I’ve had Ammonite on my ‘to watch’ list since I first heard of it. It landed on Prime a couple of weeks ago and I’ve been saving it for the right night to watch.

So, it’s a great film. It really is great, but it’s really not a film about Mary Anning at all. It’s porn. It’s a sapphic fantasy with some fossils in the background. It’s the most solid 1 on a Craster film as I have ever seen.

I don’t know how it is just a 15.

Do you want to see Kate Winslet nose-deep in the muff of one of the Little Women? Or do you want to see a stunning woman with her face buried in Kate Winslet’s beautiful body? Think watching a woman sitting on Kate Winslet’s face might enhance your evening? Then boy is this film for you. Do you want to see any kind of film about the life of the amazing Mary Anning or her achievements? Well tough, here are some really lovely nipples.

It’s a great film. Any 15 year olds; don’t watch this with your mum and dad after Sunday dinner thinking it’s about Ichthyosaurs.

It also had the grandmother from Teacup Tales in it, but not in any of the sex scenes.

This was partially filmed in Lyme Regis, where both Mary Anning and I lived! I saw a bit of the filming when i visited my parents a few times, but sadly no muff or nipples were visible.

Also, my younger sister once played the Young Mary Anning in a Discovery documentary. Luckily that one *was* about Icthyosaurs.

3 movies this weekend:

No Time To Die: An acceptable entry into the franchise, I felt. More memorable - just - than Spectre, but far from the quality of Casino Royale and Skyfall. Also, far too long. Some lovely callbacks to OHMSS, and a surprising amount of gammonbait, but decent. The
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
main villain's motivation for his evil plan is not explained well enough at all though, and he felt criminally underused in general.

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain: Another solid biopic from Benadryl Cabbagepatch, about Louis Wain, a troubled artist from the late 18th/early 19th centuries who became famous for his eccentric paintings of cats. A bit of a tearjerker, and ultimately doesn't really "satisfy" but that's not really the movie's fault.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife: My first time in a cinema for probably 2 years, I think. I was really quite pleasantly surprised with this one. I went into this expecting it to be absolutely awful, but it's actually pretty good. Nothing is ever going to beat the pure lightning-in-a-bottle that was the original movie, no matter how hard they try, but this has enough about it that's refreshing. It'd work OK as a non-Ghostbusters movie too (generally I mean) but as a Ghostbusters movie it acts as a good update to the story. Fantastic performance from the main character (played by McKenna Grace) and her pal, the cringingly-named Podcast (Logan Kim) and the rest of the cast are decent, even if they don't have a huge amount to do. If I had to nitpick, there are some references to the original that feel like they're just there for merchandising purposes, but it wasn't as "reference-packed" as I expected it to be.

I dunno, just watched it, really not impressed, thought it was a bit of a mess.

I love Kong and Godzilla, but I thought it was a bit boring, and if you are making a film about a giant Gorilla and Dinosaur fighting how on earth do you make it boring?

My daughter and eldest son were not that impressed either. (my wife fell asleep)

Well, the internet kept that quiet! I was genuinely surprised by the ending. Brave of them to go all in.

Overall I thought it was excellent. Certainly better than the confused and grim mess that was Spectre.

After being really impressed by Paloma, I was then equally disappointed by how quickly she exited the film. I suppose they're hoping for a spin off, but with CraigBond being dead, the continuity would be weird

I tried to watch Red Notice with Ryan Reynolds, The Rock and Gal Gadot but even the latter couldn’t make me spend time being utterly bored by the whole thing. Reynolds even seems to phone it in more than usual which is pretty impressive given his output these days. Terrible.

Then I watched Apple TV EXCLUSIVE(c)(TM), Finch, with Tom Hanks and erm… Tom Hanks. It starts out really fucking miserable and really impressive as a sort version of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. Now that was already turned into a decent enough film (the book is better though. Natch.) so here we get Hanks crossing the country to find shelter from impending doom when he creates a robot to look after his dog when he’s dies of radiation poisoning from an unseen apocalyptic event. I found it really compelling up until the time when I didn’t. The robot eventually started to get on my nerves a little (I mean, it was ok but too fucking Chappie for my liking) and the lack of satisfying drama just kinda robbed it of purpose. For example, they escape a building from baddies we never see and hide from baddies in a car that don’t do anything. They hide from a storm. They hide from something else. It just needed some nastiness a la The Road that we never get. It might make you cry at the end, I certainly felt some sad emotions, but in retrospect it lacked something, anything, to make it memorable.

Spiderman - No Way Home.

What a great Spiderman film, I think it is the best so far. Tom is awesome as the role and it made my cry in places.

a lot of villains back from the other films... It handles the impact of the world now knowing who Peter Parker / Spiderman is, and the problems because of it.

I am really not sure what I can say as I don't want to spoil it. (I might start a new thread to talk about it)

9.5/10

Went to see Spider-Man: No Way Home this afternoon.

Great movie, somewhat marred (through no fault of its own) by a sudden need for me to urinate at which I thought was a point close to the end, which meant I tried to hang on so as not to miss anything, only to realise that I was only about halfway through. I held on as best I could, but eventually I had no choice but to duck out of the auditorium, rush to the bogs and release the pressure on my bladder.

No idea what I missed, obviously, but I walked back into the theatre and stood awkwardly at the back for about 5 minutes before the end credits rolled.

We watched this (we did find a free 7 day trial). It was a really good concept. I think the direction was a bit woolly at times, and the acting was surprisingly baggy from two great actors. What I DID notice, however, was that all of the non-speaking actors were *particularly* great.

One thing really, really bothered me though…

At the end of the film Michael Sheen essentially gives away 40 years of his life, because he doesn’t walk back through the carriages after ‘fixing’ them post-war. Obviously he now has the great relationship with his cousin, but as we know he doesn’t acquire memories of future changes, he’s essentially a stranger to him for the last forty years.
