Jem and I watched Knives Out last night.

Great movie - nice bit of crime thriller type stuff going on, with a few twists and turns. Some of which were entirely predictable, others that were not.

Outstanding performances all round, particularly Daniel Craig and Ana de Armas, but nice to see Christopher Plummer putting in a solid turn as well - always remember him from Dragnet and I can't really see him as anything other than that character since.

I still say "Ever onward" a fair bit, which is a quote of his from Dragnet.

Aye, one of my favourites. Shame that Tom Hanks doesn't really do comedy any more, I think Dragnet and The 'Burbs are great.

I watched 'Ghost Of The Fireflies' last night on a friend's recommendation. (She warned me ahead of ahead of time she's only watched it once and can't even think about it now without crying.)

It's a Ghibli film, which somehow I've never seen a single one of before.

The film transfixed me from start to finish and I was in bits by the end.

Definitely one of those to see once. But probably only once.

Some movies are such singular achievements that they deserve to be seen at least once by everyone who considers himself or herself to be a lover of film. Grave of the Fireflies falls into that exclusive category. The production is so emotionally challenging, however, that one time may be all that can be endured. Despite the artistry and care invested in the film’s crafting, the result is as close to traumatic as a movie can claim to be and watching it a second time is in some ways more difficult than the first. The power of Takahata’s vision is such that the initial reaction never fades. Grave of the Fireflies doesn’t need to be revisited to leave an indelible mark on the memory.

I love that film with all my heart but, by god, it’s a difficult film to watch. After it had finished I just sat there for a couple of minutes watching the credits in silence.

It's weird that Hanks and Ackroyd never did much else together, they certainly had chemistry in that film.

7 minutes into Guns Akimbo (the new Daniel Ratcliffe film where he gets guns glued to his hands) and the editing is giving me a fucking headache like Bay’s last movie. I can tell this is going to be utterly without merit.

You're watching a film where Daniel Radcliffe has guns glued to his hands. It shouldn't take seven minutes.

It’s taken 16 minutes. It’s trying way too hard to be “in your face” and RADcliffICAL. When a woman starts shooting tons of guys and it’s all really shit CG blood I turned it off. She licked her gun. I mean, come on, the barrel would be hot. Tch.

So instead I’m watching Jumanji: The Next Level and there’s a distinct lack of Crank in it. But, by god, The Rock is brilliant. It helps a great deal that he gets all the best lines but he’s killing the character of old man in a young mans body. He gets a laugh every time someone is talking and he goes “Huh?” with this crooked face. When he says “Whatareyoustealing for” I did a big laugh. Man, he’s great.

Unfortunately Kevin Hart is still in it, but at least he’s not just playing his usual Kevin Hart again. Well, sometimes, because sometimes he slips and says things how he usually would. Weirdly him and The Rock are the only reasons to watch.

The other characters are just there. They just dump exposition for the most part.

Surprisingly watchable.

Watched "Colo(u)r Out of Space". It's certainly not for everyone but I thought it was great and one of the more successful interpretations of a Lovecraft story. Lots of body horror and truly disturbing nastiness with added maximum Nick Cage and a sprinkling of Tommy Chong. It comes across like the nastier cousin of Annihilation. Recommended.

So looking at the scores above and parsing them for people with decent taste, it’s 5/10 for the first 80 mins then 9/10 for the last 40. It’ll be fine.

Holy crap what a great film, me and Mrs Hearthly watched it together as Jnr decided to have an evening of needle felting.

I like the description 'comes across like the nastier cousin of Annihilation', so I won't try and go beyond that.

I agree with the 'recommended' status and give it 805/1000. Mrs Hearthly is however slightly discomfited, (although she still really liked it), and says it 'gave me the heebies'. (She was quite keen on the Lovecraft connection as there's a lot of that stuff in WoW, but hadn't quite given due consideration to what a proper Lovecraft translation might play out like, away from the rather tamer confines of WoW.)

Anyway, give this one a watch - thanks for the heads-up Morte! :)

Watched The Circle over the weekend.

Utter shash. I genuinely think it might be the worst film I've ever seen. Primarily because it is the sort of film that, on paper, should have enormous promise but it squanders it all away with gay abandon.

Also watched Sonic the Hedgehog.

A pretty good film, I thought - obviously intended for kids, but Jim Carrey was clearly having a blast and everything else was relatively inoffensive and - somehow - made more sense than The Circle.

So it’s a very faithful adaptation of the novel, then.
