Tilda Swinton is a chameleon unafraid of any subject matter, no matter how hard-hitting or difficult. She has appeared in one of the most emotionally crushing films I have ever seen, Tim Roth's The War Zone, and her performance in We Need to Talk about Kevin is equally as bruising. A meditation on the pain suffered by a mother when her child turns out to be a monster, We Need to Talk about Kevin is the perfect tonic for holiday cheer. Want to blacken an evening and turn a smile into a frown? We Need to Talk about Kevin can do it in less than two hours. This is a depressing motion picture, yet the issues it addresses are real, especially in a world where the term "childhood innocence" is losing all meaning.

Look, I’m not saying that Adam Sandler should get an Oscar or anything stupid like that but UNCUT GEMS was fantastic. I was heavily invested in Sandler’s character and the world he had created around him throughout the lengthy runtime. All this despite him being quintessentially Adam Sandler. But with a set of fake top teeth. What the fuck were the teeth about!?

I enjoyed all the people that inhabited this world, the story and I was even at the edge of my seat waiting to find out what a basketball game score was. And I don’t give a flying fuck about sport. I won’t spoil anything for anyone who wants to watch it but you probably should watch it if you enjoy character driven drama. If you watched The Irishman and thought it was excellent but could probably do with an hour or so trimmed off it then you might like this.



But then, by god, what in the heavenly fuck were they thinking with that euro-dance song that smacks into the credits!?

9/10? No, it had Adam Sandler in it. 6/10. But I now can’t imagine anyone else in that role. Fuck it, 8/10 and we never talk about this again.

Uncut Gems. This was not relaxing Sunday night viewing. But it was brilliant. There's something deeply discomfiting about watching stupid people make stupid decisions. You feel stressed at the end of this. But it's also funny, believable and led by a relentless performance by Sandler.

Now, I've never really been a Sandler hater, I've just hated 99% of the films he's in. I liked him in Funny People, I liked him in Punch Drunk Love. He's able to tread a line between aggressive, odious and vulnerable that is not all that common.

And Sandler is really great in this. Though it helps that everyone is great in this, especially his family, his warring brother-in-law who is this weird Sid James/Will Self hybrid. And then there is the basketball player, whose performance is so convincing that I was surprised to discover he is actually a professional basketball player (if that doesn't sound too contradictory).

Not seen any other Safdie brothers' films, but going to check out Good Time next.

The big dude in John Wick 3 was in the NBA too.

Just a quick heads-up for this film, sorry but I can't be arsed doing a proper review after pulling 28 hours of overtime between Fri-Sun, but I did finally get chance to sit down and watch a film yesterday evening.

What I will say is it runs to over two and a half hours and yet it had me engrossed every step of the way, and I generally run out of patience very quickly with films that are stretched out to be overly long.

Yes I know Mel Gibson is 'problematic' as a person but fuck me the man can act, Vince Vaughn gives a great performance, Don Johnson is in there, the sister from Dexter, and that woman from The Walking Dead.

RT summary - DRAGGED ACROSS CONCRETE follows two police detectives who find themselves suspended when a video of their strong-arm tactics is leaked to the media. With little money and no options, the embittered policemen descend into the criminal underworld and find more than they wanted waiting in the shadows.

I watched Marriage Story.

It’s Kylo Ren vs Blackwidow in a slanging match where both are stripped of their powers and just have to yell their most cruel insults at each other all the while trying not to tell their little shit of a love child not to shut the fuck up.

It was absolutely brilliant. Heartbreaking but brilliant.

It also teaches us that lawyers are unintentionally hilarious cunts.

Jojo Rabbit: Taika Waititi's satire of Nazi ideals--and hate in general really--is touching, stupid and hilarious in equal measure.

Watched it tonight. Yes, very touching but does get dark in places. I got the impression that the audience in the cinema were felt uncomfortable laughing at some of the bits. Really well done.

I dunno, the only part that I feel got properly dark was and apart from that it was all relatively light touch given the subject matter.

Certainly I never felt any tension in the laughter at my showing, I felt the film gave ample 'permission' to laugh at the actual comedy.
