I watched WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN last night and kind of wished I hadn't since it's hands down one of the most emotionally devastating films I've ever seen and it made me sad.

It's a superb film, (Tilda Swinton's performance is incredible), but definitely not date night material.

http://www.reelviews.net/reelviews/we-n ... bout-kevin

Quote:
Tilda Swinton is a chameleon unafraid of any subject matter, no matter how hard-hitting or difficult. She has appeared in one of the most emotionally crushing films I have ever seen, Tim Roth's The War Zone, and her performance in We Need to Talk about Kevin is equally as bruising. A meditation on the pain suffered by a mother when her child turns out to be a monster, We Need to Talk about Kevin is the perfect tonic for holiday cheer. Want to blacken an evening and turn a smile into a frown? We Need to Talk about Kevin can do it in less than two hours. This is a depressing motion picture, yet the issues it addresses are real, especially in a world where the term "childhood innocence" is losing all meaning.

Atomic Blonde was rubbish wasn’t it? But the cornerstone set-piece, man alive, still causes me to tense up as I was watching it. It’s seriously impressive stuff especially with the camera moving around inside the car as the fist fight concludes. But the detective drama was done better in shitting Detective Pikachu.

But with a set of fake top teeth. What the fuck were the teeth about!?

I enjoyed all the people that inhabited this world, the story and I was even at the edge of my seat waiting to find out what a basketball game score was. And I don’t give a flying fuck about sport. I won’t spoil anything for anyone who wants to watch it but you probably should watch it if you enjoy character driven drama. If you watched The Irishman and thought it was excellent but could probably do with an hour or so trimmed off it then you might like this.

But then, by god, what in the heavenly fuck were they thinking with that euro-dance song that smacks into the credits!?

9/10? No, it had Adam Sandler in it. 6/10. But I now can’t imagine anyone else in that role. Fuck it, 8/10 and we never talk about this again.

Uncut Gems. This was not relaxing Sunday night viewing. But it was brilliant. There's something deeply discomfiting about watching stupid people make stupid decisions. You feel stressed at the end of this. But it's also funny, believable and led by a relentless performance by Sandler.

Now, I've never really been a Sandler hater, I've just hated 99% of the films he's in. I liked him in Funny People, I liked him in Punch Drunk Love. He's able to tread a line between aggressive, odious and vulnerable that is not all that common.

And Sandler is really great in this. Though it helps that everyone is great in this, especially his family, his warring brother-in-law who is this weird Sid James/Will Self hybrid. And then there is the basketball player, whose performance is so convincing that I was surprised to discover he is actually a professional basketball player (if that doesn't sound too contradictory).

Not seen any other Safdie brothers' films, but going to check out Good Time next.

Joker star Joaquin Phoenix has been named Best Actor at the 77th Golden Globe Awards, giving the six-time nominee his second Golden Globe following a 2006 win for his performance as Johnny Cash in Walk the Line. Phoenix’s portrayal of street clown and failed stand up comedian Arthur Fleck, a self-described mentally ill loner, beat out competitors Christian Bale (Ken Miles, Ford v Ferrari), Antonio Banderas (Salvador Mallo, Pain and Glory), Adam Driver (Charlie, Marriage Story) and Jonathan Pryce (Pope Francis, The Two Popes).

It will come as no surprise to anyone given the rave reviews it’s been getting but Parasite (that Korean film) is fucking great. Beautifully shot and it’s almost like a farce, if you ask me, in terms of story and performance but there’s something compelling about the characters that you want to see where it’s going. Personally I thought the first act was a little too long (in particular the mum is the least interesting of all the characters) but once it got going the momentum keeps going until the end.

And that final shot of the film? Loved it.

Apparently the bloke who did this did The Host and Okja, which are both really fucking good. So yeah, watch this it’ll make you interested in films again. 9/10

So... when the Jawas shout "Houtini!" does it actually mean anything? I mean, in New Hope I figured it was Jawese for, "Surprise, mother-fucker!" or something. But at the end of Skywalker there's a bunch of Jawas just standing around (I've no idea what they're doing rocking up to the abandoned Lars ranch, possibly having an enjoyable tour of New Hope era massacres - burnt pile of Jawas near Arrowhead next stop!) and one of them just exclaims, "HOUTINI!" for absolutely no reason. 'cause 'member "Houtini!"???

Films watched in the past week:

Snake Eyes: Two films in one! Gary Sinise attempting to film a serious thriller while Nicolas Cage films a home movie 'A day in the life of Nicolas Cage'

The Price of Fame: Documentary about Ted DiBiase. First five minutes is posturing and catchphrases, then thirty minutes of fairly interesting soundbites from various 80s wrestlers but then it just descends into a fake fly-on-the-wall thing talking about the impact of his affair on his wife and kids. Turned it off after an hour

What I will say is it runs to over two and a half hours and yet it had me engrossed every step of the way, and I generally run out of patience very quickly with films that are stretched out to be overly long.

Yes I know Mel Gibson is 'problematic' as a person but fuck me the man can act, Vince Vaughn gives a great performance, Don Johnson is in there, the sister from Dexter, and that woman from The Walking Dead.

RT summary - DRAGGED ACROSS CONCRETE follows two police detectives who find themselves suspended when a video of their strong-arm tactics is leaked to the media. With little money and no options, the embittered policemen descend into the criminal underworld and find more than they wanted waiting in the shadows.

The ‘it was in his mind’ reveal was really hampered by the flashback for the fucking morons who couldn’t figure it out; the Batman stuff was utterly unnecessary and actually really boring and De Nero’s TV show just went on and on. The gunshot was really predictable too and for a film that stripped away the comics for realism the TV show was entirely cartoonish and unrealistic.

I was going to watch this last night (it's on my Netflix watch list) but I found myself not in the headspace for it (I know what it's about), so watched Mississippi Burning instead, which somehow I've managed never to see before.

Mississippi Burning is excellent and also currently on Netflix, although not exactly much fun given what it's about. Always nice to see Gene Hackman at the top of his game.

I dunno, the only part that I feel got properly dark was

Both the gallows sequences, and the Gestapo raid were the darkest for me. That said, Merchant makes a superb Herr Flick. And whilst the HJ camp scenes were a charming parody of similar camp sequences in other films, as well as uniformed youth organisations in general, there's still something discomfiting about kids being traained for war, particualry given what we know happens - and happens at the end of the film

I found the superhero parody and the Hard Days' Night parody at the start and the camp instructor's speech hilarious. Felt I was the only one audibly laughing, but others warmed up later on, especially in the swimming pool bit

There was some tension inherent in the raid scene of course, but it was made impossible to take completely seriously due to the purposely ludicrous amount of heil hitlering that started proceedings off; which is what I meant when I said it always gave you permission to laugh. And Hitler got laughs right from the start in my showing because it was made clear instantly he was a camp, comedy version. I'm genuinely surprised at the idea of any of it making people uncomfortable to laugh at.
