Amazon's subtitles are shockingly bad, it's something Netflix are massively better at. (And Amazon don't always have subtitles, either.)

In order of quality:

Netflix - pretty much everything subtitled with just occasional mistakes on TV programmes, particularly when there are strong accents like on QI or The Thick of It
Now TV - quite a lot subtitled, although last time I used it, you had to enable the subtitles each time rather than them always being on
Amazon - not much subtitled, but quality isn't too bad (except First Blood which was the worst I've seen). Have to enable them each time
Google Play Movies - hardly anything subtitled, even big-budget films

Look, I’m not saying that Adam Sandler should get an Oscar or anything stupid like that but UNCUT GEMS was fantastic. I was heavily invested in Sandler’s character and the world he had created around him throughout the lengthy runtime. All this despite him being quintessentially Adam Sandler. But with a set of fake top teeth. What the fuck were the teeth about!?

I enjoyed all the people that inhabited this world, the story and I was even at the edge of my seat waiting to find out what a basketball game score was. And I don’t give a flying fuck about sport. I won’t spoil anything for anyone who wants to watch it but you probably should watch it if you enjoy character driven drama. If you watched The Irishman and thought it was excellent but could probably do with an hour or so trimmed off it then you might like this.

But then, by god, what in the heavenly fuck were they thinking with that euro-dance song that smacks into the credits!?

9/10? No, it had Adam Sandler in it. 6/10. But I now can’t imagine anyone else in that role. Fuck it, 8/10 and we never talk about this again.

Recent watches from me:

JOKER - Fantastic film, Joaquin Phoenix is mesmerising and pretty much the whole thing is put together perfectly. I don't get all this 'right wing incel' stuff it's been associated with either, it seems like a pretty clear rallying cry that everyone should look after each other to me.

6 UNDERGROUND - Exactly what I was hoping it would be, it's like Michael Bay injected himself with Michael Bay and then snorted Michael Bay whilst taking a Michael Bay suppository, and then made a film. I've seen talk of CONTINUITY ERRORS in the opening car chase but come on, it becomes pretty obvious within 60 seconds it's one of those magic regenerating car chase sequences.

Still not as good as THE ROCK though, but then, nothing is.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD - My favourite of the three, only just beating out JOKER by a smidgen. Only Tarantino could make a film that meanders around and takes its time like this, and only Tarantino could make it work. I don't think I've ever seen Pitt and DeCaprio do better work either.

Set aside three hours and treat yourself to this one.

Oh yes I forgot one, it's on Netflix at the moment, SMOKIN' ACES.

It's violent, bloody, grimy, sleazy, sweary, funny, shooty, action-packed and totally ridiculous, but a great flick.

It's got Alec Baldwin, Ben Affleck, Ryan Reynolds, Ray Liotta, Chris Pine (New Kirk), and other familiar faces in it, and it's got a proper chainsaw death in it as well.

Note the RT scores, it's another one of those that critics get snooty about but the audience think is fine. (Like POLAR.)

I give it 750/1000, splendid Friday night film that requires no brain.

Cert 18 according to the BBFC website, and it takes a lot to get an 18 these days.

Felt like some comfort viewing so put on my favourite Marx Brothers film, 'Monkey Business'. Never fails to amuse, and every time I watch it I pick up in something new. Still crack up at the immigration scene, the barber shop bit, and the 'Sweet Adeline' gag amongst other gems. It's also the one where Zeppo's talents as a parody of the traditional juvenile role really shows.

I did consider rewatching 'Duck Soup' but oddly the tale of a charlatan achieving high office and antagonising his country's neighbours for the hell of it just doesn't feel right at the moment.

Just watched The Phantom Menace with the kids. I actually enjoyed it for the first time since the 90s and the kids thought it was fun. Still a bit long, really saggy in the middle and the dialogue is as wooden as the forest moon of Endor, but not a terrible way to spend a few hours. Let's see if episode 2 is as boring as I remember tomorrow night!

As someone who’s watched all 11 Star Wars films quite recently, I can tell you that AotC is pretty much still terrible. TPM has some decent scenes (pod racing, the Jedi fighting Maul) and I don’t hate it anymore.

RotS is the best prequel film though.

I remember going to see Revenge of the Sith at the cinema with Moi Woif. I should've expected it given what a shower of shit the previous two films were, but I was so bored that for the final half an hour I watched the ceiling instead of the screen. In fact, that was the last time I went to the cinema to see anything such was the power of the suck.

I saw either Revenge of the Sith or Attack of the Clones at the cinema but I can't for the life of me remember which. It also means that whichever I saw, I haven't seen the other. I'm not overly fussed about fixing that.

Re-watched Cop Land tonight. I'd forgotten there were big names in it and although Stallone's role doesn't really get going till the latter stages, I like his performance in it.

It's like the volleyball scene from Top Gun had sex with the Expendables and then just went on and on and on and on, in a terrible British accent. Just absolute dreck.

We watched The Adjustment Bureau last night. Another movie based on a story by everyone's favourite penile-named science-fiction writer, Philip K. Dick.

Interesting concept, and nicely acted by both of the main leads. Bonus Terence Stamp.

Kind of falls flat at the end though, seems to leave it a little bit too late to get to the "action" bit (for lack of a better word) and everything gets wrapped up far too quickly for my liking.

What struck me about that film was how awful the dialogue was. I already knew there'd be nonsensical stunts and car porn so my expectation were low, but I thought that maybe some of the one-liners could have actually been funny. My one and only cinema trip from last year... I need to do better this year.

A few other things that bugged me -

- shoehorning the whole Samoa bit in
- having Hattie be any kind of a match for Hobbs in a fight (admittedly, I had to look up the character name of Hattie.. and then also double-checked which one was Hobbs and which one was Shaw :D )
- Kevin Hart

I only went along to see it because a friend of mine wanted to see it and she hated it too. At least it's my choice next time...

I’ve never seen Soylent Green.

Turns out it’s a pretty fun look at a bleak future where resources are running out, the populous is overcrowded, predominantly poor, hardly anyone has seen fruit except the super rich and if you, as a cheap as commoner, get tired of life then you just pop down to your local dignatas to end your life.

This is the one film I’ve watched and thought “Hmmm hoverboards are a stupid idea but bin lorries that’s scoop up troublemakers now that might happen.”
