Watching the first John Wick, 3 times, is a far more satisfying experience than watching the trilogy. Same for Matrix (I've seen that many many times and still enjoy it).

I know what you mean. It was slow, odd and mostly pointless; so it shouldn't really have been enjoyable. But taken as a whole I found it incredibly compelling.

Slow, I don’t mind.

Odd, I’d go out of my way to watch something odd.

But pointless? Absolutely. Magot Robbie’s part in the whole film is almost baffling, especially since her part in the finale is entirely circumstantial. Leo’s “arc” reaches its peak halfway through the film. Pitt doesn’t really have an arc. I’m not sure how rewatchable some of his parts will be either...the “twist” in the showdown at the abandoned film lot might just make that sequence boring on repeated viewing. Him fixing the TV aerial really was pointless.

But I did enjoy myself. I enjoyed the Bruce Lee scene even though I was internally angry that Tarantino would even think that anyone could beat Bruce. There were some good performances but I’m surprised that there weren’t some Oscar worthy performances on display. The best performance was a little 8 year old girl who fucking killed her part. There were some duff performances though: the Aussie (I think) from Death Proof et all (why does he insist on shoehorning her into his films!?) wasn’t very good; someone else as well but I forget who...

There didn’t seem much in the way of classic Tarantino dialogue either, which I was a bit surprised about. There seemed to be a fair few repetitive shots of cars driving aboot.

Talking of cars though, I’ve got no idea how they did that opening shot where Leo & Pitt first turn onto Hollywood Boulevard. It was a 5 second scene but it was absolutely filled with cars from the time. It was mindblowing how great it looked and I couldn’t fathom if it was just really fantastic CGI. It certainly didn’t look like it.

But you know what annoyed me most - that given the absolutely blinding cast - that this didn’t turn out to be an absolutely fucking amazing epic. It was just...ok.

Hmmm, after tapping away on my phone it turns out that I wasn’t impressed.

EDIT: I just want to mention that I was really looking forward to it, as well... gah

American Made -Tom Cruise flies an aeroplane and has capers. It's a Tom Cruise film, so immediately gets 7/10 as he is rarely in anything terrible. The plot rattles along, he gives a good performance, as do the rest of the cast. Some nice touches in there along the way with bids to other things. Worth the running time, you won't be challenged. 8/10

I’m trying to think if I’ve ever liked a Tom Cruise film, and I don’t think I have. Maybe Rain Man, but I think I liked that in spite of him rather than because of him.

I’ve seen Top Gun and Vanilla Sky and didn’t really like either, but I think a large part of that was likely that I don’t like him or his acting, rather than the films themselves being awful.

Tom Cruise is great, it's very rare to find him in something unwatchable, and whatever one may think about the man himself, he always gives it 100% and has turned in some awesome performances over the years.

Of his films not already mentioned I'd give a shout out to:

The mummy remake film he was in is awful. It's such a bad film. Tom is okay in it, but the rest of it is so bad.

Also recently rewatched Mission Impossible 1 and 2 and they are nowhere near as good as I used to think they were.

Top Gun, however, is still one of my favourite films ever. The sort of film that if you are channel flicking and it's half way through, you'd just continue watching until the end.

Magnolia was great, in and of itself. But TC was also excellent in it.

And the Mission Impossibles are good fun.

Would agree, I can't thing of a terrible film he's been in.

Though I've not seen the samurai film or Knight and Day.

Cruise has an immense filmography that most actors will never be able to recreate. He has a catalogue of films that is virtually timeless. The early years are both experimental and bombastic in all the right ways. His run of films throughout the 80’s and 90’s is untouchable. He strayed into a more action hero role in the post-2000 era but he had a couple of good roles outside of the typical Mission: Impossible character he eventually settled into. The 2010’s onward see him almost exclusively play his MI character but he’s been fortunate to work with some incredibly talented directors and cast doing some great action movies despite his age (Probably because of Scientology, amirite).

There’s a few duffers in his roster as any actor who spans 4 decades might have, but even his worst films are just forgettable.

I hope that his new Top Gun film establishes him as a fantastic character actor again and slowly erodes the Ethan character he loves so dearly and keeps him relevant in film these days. It’s telling his only films lined up after that are currently Mission: Impossible 7 & 8... I hope as he gets a bit older we’ll see the more experimental TC playing some characters with more depth and not just a skin mask that he can dispose of in an instant for his new M:I blockbuster.

You needn't bother with Ad Astra. Shallow, unengaging characters, story doesn't really go anywhere, and can't match it's contemporaries for spectacle. Bit of a miss fire overall.

Brad Pitt is fine, but it relies way to hard on stilted voiceover, he's doing a Ryan Gosling strong silent thing, but doesn't really pull it off.

I rewatched two films this weekend that I really enjoy:

Bone Tomahawk: Probably the best western that’s not a western.

Jackie Brown: The black sheep of the Tarantino films. It’s still great viewing, mind. The cast is fantastic and give some great performances. I reckon I’m going to have to watch Once Upon a Time in Hollywood again to see how it stacks up with this.

I really enjoyed this. The trailers made it look more comedy than it was, but still, very good film.

Weirdness aside, I also think Cruise makes good films and is very watchable. He was ace in Tropic Thunder too.

For some unfathonable reason this country now has Disney+ so we watched Solo as we had missed it in the cinema
it was quite nice but I couldn't seem to be really into it for some reason
maybe because with all the unknown characters I kept waiting for them to die because they are not in the original trilogy

Do you mean Adam Sandler (rather than IT)?

If so, I used to feel that way about Jim Carey. Every time he gurned and did his ‘thing’ I disliked him more and couldn’t stand to watch anything it.

Then he did a couple of credible films but I didn’t want to watch them because of him but eventually did, and he was brilliant.

Yeah, I was talking about Sandler. It feels to me like Serious Jim Carrey has done more stuff at this point than Irritating Comedy Jim Carrey so I can't take him at face value; whereas Sandler's been a fucking gurning idiot for most of his career so he doesn't get a pass. Probably none of that's true, but it's how it feels in my head.

So I’m watching Top Secret (45 mins in) and I know why it’s been largely forgot: it’s not a patch on Airplane!

It’s got its moments but there’s something wrong. The jokes are there but they’re in shorter supply and less frequent. They needed to be rapid fire like Airplane! but they’re ponderous and laboured. It’s part content, part delivery and part editing.

Speaking of editing, I’m not sure if I’m watching a cut version or what really. There’s a scenes with ballerinas with big penises and at one point there’s a weird zoom in like something was being cut out. And then there’s a weird execution scene where some granny slowly makes her way to a phone as Val Kilmer is about to be shot. There doesn’t seem to be a punchline as the scene just cuts to the next scene where Val is performing at a concert. Old films have bad editing for sure but this seems like something was cut out.

And what a freaking weird concert it is too. Val Kilmer is singing about taking a woman to bed ... to a 12 year old. It’s clearly a sign of the times thing, but in today’s environment it’s creepy as shit.

And Val, he gives it his best, but he’s no Leslie with his comedic timings. I really miss the exquisite deadpan delivery. And you will too.

I remember feeling the same aboot it. Worth it for one of Peter Cushing's last roles, but the jokes fell flat for me. Dunno if Val was in full Val mode behind the scenes by that point in his career given that it was a couple of years prior to Top Gun. I have trouble watching anything with him in it knowing what a massive bell he was.

Darwin has started to really like Minions. We’ve got Despicable Me 2&3 on Netflix, but I thought there was an actual Minions movie at some point, but I can’t find it on eBay anywhere.

Did I imagine it? If not, any idea what it was called?
