That's all clients, apart from the web browser, though. it's not a PS4 thing in particular, and it is really fucking annoying.

The Fire TV client doesn't

They could buffer without actually playing it though. What possible reason is there to actually start playing an episode behind the OSD as you scroll through? Other than trolling their users.

Mimi, I'm SO glad you mentioned this, because our TV does this if I connect to Plex directly via the TV instead of via the fire stick then Plex app, and I thought I was going crazy. I assume it's a setting on that input mode.

I'm glad I'm slightly less bonkers than I originally thought :)

Huh? It plays the trailer for things as you're browsing through and pause to read the description for more than a millisecond, how does that help with buffering?

'Cube' was added to Netflix today, so that's my evening's viewing sorted.

(And 'The Princess Bride' too, but I watched that recently)

Someone on my street has a cat deterrent in his front garden, every time I walk past it I have tinitus for about 5 minutes after I stop hearing it. My wife can't hear the single high pitch tone but I can even with headphones on, which makes me feel youthfully smug. However my kids tell me it's not a single high pitch tone, it starts high and then gets higher and higher and it's actually painfully annoying for them, so now I feel smugly old.

The Lego Movie: Part 2 is alright.

Nowt special but inoffensive enough. The songs were quite good. The live action parts really took me out of the film though - I wish they would cut that crap out or have it like Tom & Jerry where you only see the human’s feet or something.

Also it made me remember Will Ferrell was in the first film and that put me in a mood.

Couple of recent watches from me.

OVERLORD - WWII Nazi super soldier/zombie flick. It's a mashup of a B movie premise with an A movie cast, production values, budget, actors, script, direction etc. Effects are by Industrial Light & Magic, major studio, JJ Abrams involved, and suchlike. Really great Saturday night watch, starts off as a standard sort of WWII film and then gradually draws you into some very weird, very dark places. Crazy Nazi scientist is trying to perfect the 'super soldier', using French villagers as disposable experimentation subjects, and the experiments aren't going too well.... A squad of American soldiers are on a mission to blow up a radio station on the run up to D-Day, but they find more than they bargained for....

Considered a 'hard R' in the States and got an 18 here, which takes a bit these days, it doesn't spare the horror once it gets going.

Fantastic fun - 865/1000 (I thought of the new Wolfenstein games more than once....)

TRIPLE FRONTIER - Has just turned up on Netflix with no real theatrical release and appears to have been in production limbo for the best part of a decade, which doesn't bode well, but this is a solid film. Cast includes Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac and Charlie Hunnam. Directed by the chap who did that there MARGIN CALL and ALL IS LOST and A MOST VIOLENT YEAR.

It's a heist movie except the heist happens just over halfway through the film and the entire third act is the aftermath of the heist, which seems to have annoyed a lot of people on imdb who didn't get the point of the third act, which rather misses the point of the film IMO.

The basic premise is there's a group of five ex-US marine style chaps, who did 'dark' missions in various foreign countries, and they haven't adapted well to civilian life once out of the forces. One of their number brings the group back together with an idea for a job that'll set them all up for life, working for themselves rather than a country that never rewarded their sacrifices.

This isn't an amazing film, the script clunks a bit in places, however the locations are fucking breathtaking (Colombia, The Andes and suchlike), and the story is solid, and when the actors have their better lines to deliver they rise to the occasion.

Deffo one to watch on a really big telly if you can, the action scenes are superbly shot (the heist itself is excellent), and I was quite happy with the way the third act panned out, even though many seem to see it as a pointless anti-climax. Anyway, it's on Netflix so if you've got it, no reason not to watch it.

740/1000

The Death of Stalin - what a film. Not at all what I was expecting going into it. Jason Isaacs steals every scene he's in.

My god, but Iannucci can write dialog like no-one else on earth.

My favourite ever line of his is from Veep; "Asking Gary to help is like trying to use a croissant as a dildo. It's not going to work and it's just going to make a fucking mess."

That is one of the things I dislike about the sequels. The first one very clearly creates this marvellous dynamic where every single person is shit scared of him. "So he's the boogeyman?" "No. He's the guy you send to kill the boogeyman." It nicely inverts the trope where the bad guys mess with the wrong guy and arrogantly dismiss the threat.

a) haven't we established that coming for Wick is how fools get gatted
b) if your assassin lady can kill Wick and Wick can do your hit, then by the transitive property, just send your assassin to do your hit in the first place
c) just get Wick to the job then leave him alone, you don't need to kill him, he's clearly a fucking pro which is why you hired him in the first place

Agreed. It would have made things so much better if there'd been a few scenes in #2 where they tried to hire some mooks to kill him and they were all "nah mate, it's a suicide mission". As it is, we're expected to believe that all of these nameless assassins will attempt to kill someone who is widely believed to be unkillable for what is presumably a relatively small amount of money for the risk.

I just can't buy it.

a) Maybe. But we've not explored the wider world of assassins. Sure, the Russian mob is scared of Wick, but that might be because he's the one they heard of. You've got to imagine that you wouldn't know a good assassin's name.
b) Leaving aside the possibility that John's skillset may be more appropriate to getting the job done, the bad guy has a marker against him, so it makes some sense to use him
c) He's a loose end, like they say in the movie.
I feel a bigger question is "why is everyone an assassin"?

Hmm, I have a lot of enemies, perhaps there's something in this Brexit societal collapse after all.

Also: why does taking out a hit on someone cost the same single gold coin as a beer in the Assassin's Hotel Bar?

Post-Brexit assassin economy.

Oh, I had it backwards? It's actually just a couple of quid to get someone offed?

Hmm, I have a lot of enemies, perhaps there's something in this Brexit societal collapse after all.

Oh. Fucksocks

Last night’s film was ‘NEVER GROW OLD’, which is a new release starring John Cusack and Emile Hirsch.

The film is set in 1849, Hirsch plays the town undertaker and carpenter in a small sort of frontier town that’s on the route to California. He lives there with his pregnant wife and two children.

Business in the town is slow, due to the town’s saloon having been closed down by a devout Christian presence in the town under the eye of a fire and brimstone preacher type. (Which means no alcohol or prostitutes.)

The town’s sheriff is somewhat ineffectual, but he doesn’t really have much to do since the town is peaceful and largely run by the Christians anyway.

However, one night Cusack’s violent psychopathic bad guy character and his posse arrive in town to settle an old score with a resident, and take it upon themselves to reopen the saloon and set up shop there. As their violent ways cause bodies to pile up, the Christians are sidelined and the sheriff can’t cope, the undertaker finds he has plenty of work to do and starts to amass quite the pile of silver coins, but at what cost to his humanity and family?

This film is terribly bleak, to the point that I felt slightly off colour and queasy as I was watching it, Cusack’s character is so malevolent and dark that the entire production becomes infused with a increasing sense of dread and fear of what will happen next. It’s also quite violent and bloody at times, Cusack gets the prostitution going again which leads to a harrowing scene with a mother and daughter, and whilst there’s kind of a redemption at the end it’s by no means happy, and people getting shot in the face at point blank range leads to exactly the results you’d expect.

For all that though, I found it very effective and a thoughtful rumination on the evil of mankind, and also the idea that ‘for evil to triumph, good men just have to do nothing’.

I saw Aquaman and it was pretty rubbish but had a few decent action scenes in it (the ones with hyper-choreographed humans, not the ones with CGI EVERYWHERE).
