Weekend films (both currently on Netflix) -

Closed Circuit - pretty good Brit drama, which is better and darker than the synopsis suggests -
"Martin and Claudia, top-flight lawyers who happen to be former lovers, become targets when they're teamed up to defend a notorious terrorist."
A little disappointed with the ending, but I suppose it was one of the most realistic options for it to choose

The Good Neighbor
"Two tech-savvy teens plot to fool a cranky old neighbor into believing his house is haunted, but their cruel prank soon takes some unexpected turns."
Not too bad, but I don't imagine I'll watch it again.
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Oddly, the title of the film rather gives away the direction the film goes in

I liked Venom. I didn't like nuGhostBusters (except for Chris Hemsworth, obviously).

I didn’t like nuGhostbusters either, /sacrilege, I don’t think the original is a masterpiece either.

Saw nuPoppins the other night. Probably would have enjoyed it a lot more if the cinema wasn’t hotter than an orchid house. Emily Blunt and the kids are amazing, but it felt too long to me.

Oh ok. I will make sure I did not enjoy it.

I liked the arguments, and it was funny.

I enjoyed Venom. Decent effects, Tom Hardy Tom Hardying the hell out of it, amusing lines, etc.

Nothing to write home about, but serviceable Hollywood movie.

I thought Ghostbusters (2016) was a little bit of a let-down. Some of it was funny but there was a lot that felt a little bit awkward and fell flat for me. I expected more from the talented cast. It felt to me a little bit like it was so nervous of getting it wrong, given the near-sacred original movie [1], that it couldn’t find a groove and be its own thing. Like the cast and writers were so busy second-guessing themselves that it sapped their confidence. Not fatally, but it made it less interesting than the other Feig/McCarthy/Wiig films. I’d rewatch Spy, The Heat or Bridesmaids in a heartbeat. I’ll never rewatch Ghostbusters.

[1] in which note, Snappa, just no, you are wrong

It was more a point against people who say the remake tarnished the Ghostbusters legacy somehow.

Last night's film was 'ROMA' which is on Netflix and everyone is saying is the best thing ever.

I've been putting off watching it because the synopsis didn't make it sound very exciting and honestly, it isn't, but it's still a very good film.

It basically follows a year in the life of a live-in housekeeper to a middle class family in Mexico City, the first hour or so of the film essentially just follows the family unit through their day-to-day routines, albeit whilst showing the issues that they're facing and will be facing over the next few months.

Things accelerate (if you can call it that) in the second half of the film, but make no mistake, this is never a high-octane thrill ride and I suspect some viewers won't have the patience to see it out.

The time it takes to build the characters up pays off as the events that are set in motion in the first hour come to a head, and carry genuine heft and resonance. All the while though the film seems to clearly telegraph that it knows it's telling a very 'small' story in a lot of ways (the repeated shots of aeroplanes flying overhead, for example).

For all its virtues however, I wasn't blown away by it, and I don't feel it fully connected with me, I almost admired it more as a work of art than found it fully getting under my skin. (A couple of sequences in the second half of the film are, in fairness, quite sensationally well done and hugely impactful.)

FILM MARK - 805/1000

LEGOVER POTENTIAL - 900/1000 Black & White, foreign language, subtitles, it's a knicker-dropping sensation! *

* Probably, I don't know, it's a long time since I was fully in the KNICKER DROPPING ZONE, if I was ever in it at all, which I probably wasn't.

Films I have done watched recent like.

The Greatest Showman : Went into this expecting to hate it, as modern musicals are usually pretty shite. Really really enjoyed it, a proper good musical with great songs, good story and over the top acting.

Lady Bird : Wasn't too sure about this as I was watching, by halfway I was wondering what the point of it was, but by the end I was hooked. Lovely little film, like a more serious Napoleon Dynamite. Lead actress girl (Saoroiseosiaore) was super good.

Escape Plan 2 : Don't, just don't, utter utter trash in every possible way.

No, not Die Hard, but Skyscraper with The Rock.

Infinity War was added to Now TV today so I finally gave that a go. I went in expecting a mess of a film and that's what I got.

Too many characters and the story jumping all over the place along with the characters' strengths too.

Obviously I'll still be watching the next one to see how they wrap it all up though.

Last night's film was 'BIRD BOX' which is a Netflix exclusive film starring Michael Jackson, played here by Sanda Bullock. (Seriously, what has happened to her face? IT'S OK TO GET OLD YOU KNOW.)

This film has reviewed reasonably well but IMO is massively underrated (67% critics, 75% audience at Rotten Tomatoes).

The premise is intriguing, a mysterious force has moved its way around the world, anyone who sees it (well, almost anyone) immediately loses the will to live and commits suicide by whatever means possible. (Great film for Christmas Day, very festive and jolly.)

The film jumps between two periods in time, the outbreak itself and the aftermath, and five years later as Sandra struggles to reach a sanctuary with two young children.

In the outbreak story, we see Sandra (who is heavily pregnant) escape the immediate outbreak (just about), and subsequently holed up in a house with a small group of survivors.

In the five years later story, (the present day in the film, the outbreak story is essentially an extended flashback), she undertakes a perilous 48 hour journey down a river in a small boat with the children.

I won't go into much more detail here, as the film is best discovered as you watch it. What I will say is this is a bloody good film and I was very impressed by it. THE BIG THEME of the film is pretty clear and it does arguably hit you over the head with it a bit, but I don't mind that.

A splendid watch and highly recommended. Oh yes John Malkovich gets to eat his way through the sets in magnificent form.

905/1000 - FILM

610/1000 - LEGOVER POTENTIAL, hard to say, but I reckon if the stars align it could lead on to some hanky panky.

How are you defining scary?

Horror? Jump scares? Fantasy or real world setting? Psychological scares? Physical scares? Played seriously or with some comedy? etc etc

It's a very wide category.

Also, what do you have access to? Netflix, Amazon Prime, 'THE INTERNET' etc etc

I have access to all those things and I reckon a serious horror with psychological scares would be a good place to start.

I have access to all those things and I reckon a serious horror with psychological scares would be a good place to start.

Off the top of my head, 'SINISTER' was one I enjoyed which got genuinely creepy and scary in places.

The 2012 one with Ethan Hawke in it.

Event Horizon or The Conjuring.

I'd agree on The Conjuring but Event Horizon is more straight-up horror IMO, not sure if that's what Vision is thinking of.

(Lest we forget that, believe it or not, the Event Horizon we've all seen is the neutered, very much toned down version..... There was a fuckton of seriously nasty shit that Paramount insisted be taken out to make it a bit more 'commercial'. Rumours have abounded over the years as to whether or not the original version still exists and might ever see the light of day, but by all accounts the footage is damaged beyond repair.)

Effects supervisor Dave Bonneywell has described his time shooting the sequence and some of the gruesome details that didn’t make it. Deleted shots include a female crew member who had her mouth held open by clamps, while a crazed guy performs amateur dentistry by drilling screws into her teeth. Another unlucky chap has his legs smashed apart by steel bars and crawls away leaving parts of them behind, while another crew member had her breasts torn off. The scene also included more cannibalism and sex, with adult performers being hired to simulate the errr, intensity of the scene. The director realised most of it probably wouldn't be used, but he filmed it regardless.
