Speaking of which, it's £2.99 on Amazon at the moment. As is the sequel.

The original film shows it going from heat vision to normal "mostly red" vision when it's removed, and it's hard to say if that was meant to still be heat based.

Canonically, according to the other films (AvP2 shows the whole range of functions) it's the mask that allows them to use different vision modes.

As previously covered, I quite enjoyed the AvP films (particularly the maternity ward act - AvP2 was pleasingly brutal as a Predator film should be), although they're clearly now in an entirely separate dimension to the post-Prometheus/Covenant Aliens timeline.

I really liked Predators - it had a closer feel to the original. Adrian Brody or whatever his name is was a very good lead in that as well, surprisingly.

I'm looking forward to Predator 2018 being available at my local multi-plex.

I didn't hate AvP2, and it was pleasingly violent. AvP1 doesn't get spoken about.

AvP 1 was enjoyable schlock but could have stood to be more violent.

Went to see Possum last night at a special screening introduced by director Matthew Holness (TV's Garth Merenghi) with a Q+A afterwards.

I'd like to give an opinion however I'm not qualified to give one because a combination of an afternoon in Lancaster spent drinking real ales followed by a really nice meal and a warm dark room meant that I just couldn't keep the long blinks at bay. However what I saw was great and everyone else seemed to really enjoy themselves. It was also really interesting to get some insights from the director. So all in all it was a brilliant day/night out and I shall watch it again as soon as I can.

I re-watched CHILDREN OF MEN last night as it's turned up on Netflix. I enjoyed it a lot more second time around and it now seems eerily prescient given how the political climate here and abroad has gone since the film was made.

I'd forgotten how good Michael Caine's turn is in this film, and I've always liked Clive Owen.

For some reason it didn't massively chime with me first time around, I mean, I liked it well enough and thought it was a good film, but don't remember being blown away by it.

It was only watching it again last night that I fully appreciated all the stuff that's going on, how well the whole thing is done, and how strong the story and cast are. It works on a lot of different levels too.

Also, I think the world has become a somewhat more sinister place than it was back in 2006/2007 (I can't recall exactly when I first watched it), so the whole thing takes on a lot more emotional heft in that regard.

The Favourite: period thing, about who (Edelweiss or Emma Stone) can win the favour of Queen Anne (Olivia Colman). I'm not usually big on period stuff, but they set the scene, and throw in detail, with such happy abandon that it pulled me in. The games involved in becoming favourite are very entertaining. Plus the script writer is on a mission to show us that, goddammit, the modern age did not invent swearing, and that's good, too. Really enjoyed it, and the ending is thoughtful.

Bel Canto: not how I remember the book, but that is probably me and my dodgy memory. The book is so excellent (I remember that) that it probably made the director stick too closely to it in all sorts of minute details, without branching out and making a better film. May not have been helped by much of it being in Spanish and (less so) Japanese, but my watching it in Estonia meant Estonian and Russian subtitles. I may have missed some of the mood by missing much of the dialogue, but I didn't feel it built the tension as it might have. Still packed an emotional punch at the end.

Fantastic Beasts: Crimes Of Grindelwald

Surprisingly good. A few lulls, and it took me a while to remember who was who, but some good performances, fun action, decent comedy, and amazing effects.

It’s a fun Potter-world film. If you liked those then you’ll probably like this.

You ever see that advert for The Happytime Murders? Melissa McCarthy and a load of muppets?

It’s not terrible but it’s not good either. It’s supposed to be a comedy but it’s not funny. It’s certainly not worth watching. I thought it was written by Seth McFarlene for a while given all the pointless swearing and gross out moments.

I give it a 1/10.

Just watched Hangman on Netflix. The premise sounded interesting enough -

'A homicide detective teams up with a criminal profiler to catch a serial killer whose crimes are inspired by the children's game Hangman.'

And with Al Pacino and Karl Urban as the lead roles, I thought it might be half decent. but I was very wrong.. it's an insulting mess of a film.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
- lots of relying on blind luck and coincidence to find the next victim within the 24-hour window before the next victim is found.
- the irrelevance of the reporter that tags along with them and then seems to basically become an honorary detective for a bit, but only until the plot needs her to be sent home
- the pointlessness of the hangman game itself. No-one tries to solve it and it's clear early on that it was going to be some bloody latin word anyway
- the awful attempted twist ending

Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Top-drawer thriller. Stupendous practical stunt work, which brings a viscerality to the screen rarely seen in modern blockbusters. A touch long, perhaps, but not at all baggy — there’s barely a wasted second. And on top of all that, it even has an alright story. 4/5

Hereditary

Outstanding supernatural horror, elevated by a well-paced script, great cinematography, and amazing performances by all the cast — but especially a never-better Toni Collete. Don’t do any reading if you want to see it. Go in blind. 5/5

Welcome to Sodom: documentary on the recycling in Accra, Ghana. Much (?) of the world's electronic waste ends up here, monitors checked to see if they are working, if not, stripped for metal, then tossed on a fire to reveal the copper. Wires bundled and burnt for copper. Metal extracted as much as possible - first by the older kids, then the little ones are allowed in. All stuff that we sort of 'know' happens, but seeing how - this is a flat, litter strewn landscape, with regular acrid fires from the above activities - and the different levels of activity (those selling food, water, stripping metal, checking goods, collecting plastic from used water containers and so on) is fascinating, and salutary. I've never been quite so glad of running water, for instance, nor more annoyed by Euro youths who stand with water running while brushing their teeth (as an example).

God yes. Even better, dare I say it, than Rogue Nation and Ghost Protocol. I think I said at the time of RN that MI has really overtaken Bourne as being a great espionage thriller action type genre thing series of films, after the shite that was MI:2. Teeny Tiny Tom Cruise is eminently watchable, even when doing his crazy running thing. The action sequences are literally flawless.

I watched The Predator on the flight last week. Awful film. I ended up watching the AvP films today just to make up for it. Terrible story, acting, direction, everything. The worst thing about it was the awful jarring tonal gear shifting (is it horror, is it comedy, is it action, is it action comedy etc) and the inclusion of an autistic boy in the actual action - having a 10 year old be like "yeah, my dad shot that guy in the face woot, also I blew that mean guy into chunks with a predator weapon awesome" is fairly grim.
