My granddad died yesterday which put me in a weird and sad mood. It wasn't entirely unexpected as he was 90 and had been fading for a little while, but I have many happy memories of him and when we went to Manchester last year we made a point of visiting him so we have photos and videos of me, my dad, Mrs Hearthly and Jnr all round at his house.

Anyway, having consumed a few shandies to take the edge off I needed a film capable of consuming me in its world so I decided to watch what is being referred to as the most Nicolas Cage-esque film ever - MANDY.

If the simple plot synopsis from Wikipedia doesn't make you want to watch this film, I'm afraid I can't help you.

Oh yes, it also has a chainsaw fight in it.

Quote:
Somewhere in the primal wilderness near the Shadow Mountains in the year 1983, Red Miller (Nicolas Cage) has fallen deeply for the deceptively charming Mandy Bloom (Andrea Riseborough). However, the life he has made for himself comes crashing down suddenly and horrifyingly, when a vile band of ravaging cultists and supernatural creatures desecrate his idyllic home with vicious fury. A broken man, Red now lives for one thing only—to hunt down these maniacal villains and exact swift vengeance.

Cheers Grim...

I was very sad yesterday but I'm OK today, he lived a good life and had a close family for all of it.

Watch Mandy by the way, NIC CAGE IN A CHAINSAW FIGHT, I mean, c'mon.

It has been yoinked. I've also yoinked All The Boys Love Mandy Lane, because Amber Heard is in it and I like her.

I watched Sicario 2.

It was unfortunately worse than the first and rather pointless. The shooting and drama was still great though. Disengage brain and revel in military guys being awesome.

I just came on here to urge everyone to see Mandy...but I see Hearthly beat me to it. It's an extraordinary film, nothing quite like it and while it is 'peak Cage', Andrea Risborough is excellent too, basically she has the first half of the movie and Cage, Cage's it right up for the second half. Brilliant stuff. Also possible the best depiction of being on acid in any film I've seen.

...also 'The Cheddar Goblin' needs his own film immediately

Watched an animated film on netflix the other day called "Next Gen" visually it has a very Big Hero 6 feel to it, but I think it has touches of the Iron Giant and even Short Circuit as well. I watched it with my 9 year old daughter and we both really enjoyed it. Well worth a watch imo.

I watched an animated Marvel film with the Grimlet some years ago, I forget which one. It was all child-friendly - no blood, no adult themes, anything like that.

Except for Black Widow. She just kept swearing, and I have no idea why.

On the subject of swearing, I re-watched 'Fracture' the other day as it's one of my favourites and Amazon Prime Video have re-added it. Unfortunately all the swearing in the subtitles has been removed. I suppose it's better than no subtitles at all like a lot of the stuff on Amazon, but it's still annoying.

I've been pimping the film around work like a man possessed.

TBH though it's not a difficult sales pitch, 'Nic Cage has a vodka and LSD fuelled chainsaw fight with an evil cultist biker' generally gets the job done.

Thing is though, outside of that, there's a genuinely effective piece of cinema in there. I'll definitely be watching it again.

Good review here - https://www.slashfilm.com/mandy-review-2018/

Iron Giant is a wonderful film, really good. Our eldest (6) is very fond of it.

Annoying child actor, annoying adult actors, pantomime villains, comedy dinosaurs and zero blood - the new Jurassic Park: The Lost World is real garbage that takes another stegosaurus sized shit on the original film.

In a surprising move after the last couple, the trailer for the next X-Men film Dark Phoenix looks actually not awful. There are some really good lines in there, though it remains to be seen whether Sophie Turner's acting has improved enough to carry the character.

Venom! Lots of fun. Tom Hardy is fantastic. Venom has some great lines. There is a doctor called Dr Skirt.

The mid-credit scene got so excited that I had wood.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Woody fucking Harrleson! Carnage!

I'm going to see it on Friday with my niece and girlfriend. The latter is incredibly squeamish and not into anything even vaguely violent or 'horror' (which is teeth-grindingly annoying) so I'm really surprised she's into it.

I'd rather it was, my niece is only 12 so I'm technically sneaking her in. She's like really fucking tall for her age so I doubt anyone will care.

Yeah, from the trailers I reckon a seven year old might struggle a bit. I actually really like the fact the between this and Deadpool they're now prepared to put out some stuff that's a bit riskier (in terms of audience size and thus financial return).

Thing is though he's seen the trailers several times now, when we went to see Infinity War, Antman and Wasp, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and he was just really excited to see it. Nothing bothersome in the trailers at all from what we saw.

Yes, but they're normally advertising a film that the current audience are able to watch.

I watched Jurassic World 2, and I'm not sure about the bit of the plot where the villains were selling real live actual dinosaurs for like $10m each. They sold something like 10-15 dinosaurs for a total of $150m, as if this was some incredible amount.

In a movie that grossed $1.3b.

They'd have made far more money from just using them as stunt creatures for movies than selling them a weapons etc.

I did wonder also how much the whole facility that they built to house the dinosaurs cost. It would have probably worked out just as cheap if they haven't bothered at all.

Still, I enjoyed the film.

Also, why would you spend even $10m on an attack-trained dinosaur rather than $10m on a literal army of cannon fodder and weapons to give them?

Good point!

Yeah I still enjoyed it too, I'm just wondering if it was intended as some kind of satirical joke, or if it was just a dumb bit of writing.
