The problem is that "spoiler" isn't as cut and dried as it seems.

For me, you could have told me Infinity Wars ending before I walked in the cinema, and I wouldn't have counted it as a spoiler, as I knew pretty much what was going to happen in the last 10 minutes of that film since it was announced. Someone who hasn't read any comics and expected the typical Marvel ending, on the other hand would count it as a spoiler.

Essentially, if you argue that you should never discuss spoilers means you cannot ever discuss any media. There has to be a cutoff, and mine are a bit harsh, but if you actually give a shit about the movie/TV show...

Well you can pretty easily infer by context. If you're posting on a forum, use a spoiler tag. If you're posting on social media, use a similar technique for masking the spoiler. If you're talking to someone in person, before you spoil something, ask "do you mind if I spoil X".

Not doing this is being a dick. Doing this allows you to discuss whatever you want, without needless ruining things for other people.

Flagging up a spoiler and giving people reasonable ability to avoid it is just courteous. Not doing so selfish, and serves no actual benefit.

To my mind, if the characters in the film didn't know it was going to happen, it's a spoiler.

I think it's just any major plot point that everyone doesn't already know. e.g. mentioning that there's a shark in Jaws wouldn't really be a spoiler just because the chief didn't know at the start.

But then if you say something like “oh I love the twist” then you spend your whole time anxiously waiting for the twist.

“Was that it, or was that just plot development?” For me, almost any kind of knowledge beforehand ruins it.

Ugh, I really dislike that aspect of how shows are presented now. Especially when they are completely out of context and used as a hook.

In a similar vein, it bugs me went a film starts out with a scene near from later in the story to then jump back again; I don't need a teaser for a film I'd already committed to watch. The last two films I watched did this with differing results -

The Next Three Days. The scene is a good one, but in the context of the main story, doesn't need repeating.
Swordfish - With the opening scene at the bank being pretty good and the rest of the film being a mess, I was just waiting for the bank scene to come around to see if it would improve the film (it didn't)

Hmmm, not sure I agree with that as then you’re including a lot of the uses of dramatic irony, which are purposefully made plain to the audience before the characters’ knowledge.

I don’t like spoilers, in general. I think some films can give you almost a little burst of adrenaline at the thrill of a clever twist. Take an obvious one
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Fight Club?
where the whole perception of the characters changes after you get the ‘twist’. You can watch a film like that twice, wth and without the knowledge after the twist and it’s a different film. Different things make sense in different ways. If you go in with the knowledge before hand you’ve lost the chance to see it through that first set of conditions.

That said, spoilers for things that don’t really have a ‘twist’ don’t help me in tense moments. It’s a running joke here in my house that I refused to watch the second half of Finding Nemo because I got REALLY upset when the fish got lost. So everyone laughs ‘it’s called FINDING Nemo!’ ok, Finding, not Found, but even with the knowledge that Nemo does get found, I don’t want to go on that emotional journey. That mild peril is too much wobbly crying for me, so nope.

Oh yes, me too. It seems quite tired (and lazy). Some TV series are really, really bad for this - Supernatural springs to mind.

Hardass woman ties everyone up because she doesn’t know who to trust. Bleurgh. Somehow only those people who want to die are allowed to go wandering in the shimmer. Bleurgh. Self harming gal (who gets the bare minimum of dialogue) just disappears into/in to foilage. Bleurgh. None of the characters are particularly well fleshed out apart from Kiera Knightly. And some of the CGi is a bit dodgy. The 4 day mind wipe at the beginning is never revisited, explained or even has any impact on the film whatsoever. The exposition and, in particular, line about the shimmer refracting DNA made me pick up my phone. Bleurgh.

And that JJ Abrams was allowed to do multiple cameos as giant lens flares.

5/10

ANNIHILATION:

Hmmm I thought it was much better than that TBH, and will give it 860/1000

Most of the stuff you criticise there was covered to my mind, I really liked it. There was quite a lot of the feel of 'Under The Skin', which is entirely a good thing.

I didn't like Deadpool 2 as much as the first. I think the joke wasn't as good second time around. Decent enough action, although there's some real shonky cgi.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
In particular I thought that the CGI for Juggernaut was fairly poor, and the close ups on Colossus's face (which there were quite a few of) didn't really hold up well.

I dunno, I think you could see the areas where they obviously upped the budget, but I think the script kind of let it down. I still really like Ryan Reynolds in the role, and the rest of the cast were good too, but I don't know if I need another one of these movies like this.

The bit with the tank was really super daft though, but overall I agree - it was a really good fun film and I'd like to see more.

Death Wish (2018) - I swear to fucking god that the final scene of this fucking film was fucking spoiled in the sodding trailer. I might have to rewatch the trailer again but either the finale was so obvious that I’d thought I’d watched it before (could be, to be fair) or the trailer was the dumbest piece of shit ever.

Doesn’t matter too much anyway, it’s a terrible film.

Just rewatched the trailer (https://youtu.be/WkVCA0LDhwI for reference) and, yes, it spoils the final scene just as I remembered. LPT: don’t remember things.

Solo. I quite enjoyed it, surfing through a bit more of the Star Wars world, but it just wasn't quite there. On a few occasions it felt like the scene was done, with "insert humorous line here" left to do, and then they couldn't think of one, or thought a dull interchange was enough. Weirdly, though, given that it wasn't great, I do think it's set up quite nicely for some kind of follow up.

And maybe then Ehrenreich can use that tremendous smile a little less, to greater effect.

I have that game and I tried to play the Rancor level the other week. It's the one where it's s rampaging around the town and you control it by swinging your arms around.

Anyway, for some reason my Kinect thought that there was two people in the room so it wouldn't let me play a single player game.

Rubbish.

Solo kinda sucked. Just boring, some weird jarring cuts, and over reliance on nods to the other movies. Don't bother imo.

That guy being Han Solo was awful. Wouldn't matter that he looks nothing like Ford, but they should have picked someone with some charisma.

You're not allowed to have a mysterious backstory anymore, not when Disney can milk that teat for millions. We need to know what Boba's teenage years were like, who his first love was and how he got out of the Scarlacc pit, gosh darnit!

Firstly, my original post was super sarcastic, but here's a real answer: The last we saw of Boba he'd just seen his 'Dad' get murdered by a Jedi. I reckon a lot of story fits between that and Jabba's Palace.

I imagine there's a lot of stories that could be successfully wrung out of Obi Wan's earlier life. Conversely, I've genuinely never understood the love for Boba Fett--especially when you focus on the first three films--because he does absolutely fuck all and it a total cipher of a character.
