You must surely agree that everyone in it is astoundingly stupid and everything that happens to them is a direct result of them being astoundingly stupid though, right?

Well, no.
Spoilers:
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
The decision to head to the new planet was a sound one. It was closer, and clearly habitable. So good choice there. When they arrived in orbit it was clearly covered in vegetation and water, so a fantastic, and massively unlikely find. Yay for team Covenant.

Investigating a crashed ship is not an unusual thing to do – and indeed is precisely what happened in Alien, so unless we’re undermining the whole franchise, that’s not completely stupid either. So it was not astoundingly stupid to go and have a shufty on this new planet hat was only slightly out of their way and investigate the signal and the crashed ship at the end of it. So all good there too.

Biologist woman dragging infected man back to the lander was not completely stupid either – what else are you going to do? Pilot lady was right to lock them in the med bay.

David’s intervention was something that clearly came as a WTF, but they had an explanation as to why he was there – they knew about the missing Prometheus. It’s non-obvious that a synthetic would be a massive, massive psycho with daddy issues so following a familiar face was not insane.

The only specific two things I can think of that were stupid are (a) that pretty lady going off to have wash on her own and (b) religious replacement captain following the now-obviously insane David down into a cellar, and then sticking his face in an alien egg.

But you’ve got similar stupid things in all the Alien films – and indeed any film where anyone is in anyway in peril. That’s usually how they end up in peril in the first place.

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/201 ... ng-classes

Kathy Burke is great, but not solely because of this:

Quote:
“The year was 1996 and Bonham Carter complained on record that people didn’t take her seriously because she was pretty and middle class.

At that time it was only actresses like Helena that were getting interviewed: people thought all actors or actresses thought the way they did,” Burke says. “Helena was doing a lot of work – and I think that’s where my umbrage came from. So I just wrote a letter to Time Out, that’s the only way I could think to express what I felt.”

The letter, which was printed, said: “As a lifelong member of the non-pretty working classes, I would like to say to Helena Bonham Carter (wholly pledged member of the very pretty upper-middle classes): shut up you stupid cunt.”

I too watched this for the first time today.

It was a very pleasant way to spend a couple of hungover hours with Mini Fop.

I hadn't realised what a star-studded affair it is. It was Mini Fop's first exposure to Peter Cook and she seems to be a fan. Will get some Derek and Clive for her 6th birthday.

Also, I had always thought the spanish sword fighter was played by Timothy Dalton. Because he looks like Timothy Dalton. I certainly wasn't expecting him to be played by SAUL FUCKING BERRENSON. I felt mighty confused for some time about that. I think I might still be.

Was also surprised to see lots of familiar scenery, with many of the countryside scenes being filmed in places I spent a lot of time as a kid in Derbyshire, like Wynetts Pass outside Castleton.

I watched The Girl With All The Gifts last night and really, really enjoyed it. It's ostensibly a post-apocalyptic zombie film but it's done with a slant I doubt you'll have seen before and a surprising amount of time goes by before they even bother explaining that's what's going on (which I mean as a compliment). Atmospheric as all shit and brilliant performances throughout, not least from the titular 'girl' who's fucking incredible despite being only about 12 when it was filmed. The rest of the main cast is Glenn Close, Paddy Considene and Gemma Arterton if you need that further hook. Very good stuff indeed.

Yeah, sure, it has similarities with TLOU that it doesn't share with most zombie flicks. I still think it's unique though given that

Ellie isn't actually a 'zombie' whereas Melanie being explicitly on that side of the fence from the outset is, to me, it's USP (especially when you consider the ending).

Eh, I thought the ending fit very well with the characters as they'd been shown up until that point. Indeed the general consistency of characterisation was one of the major selling point for me.
