It might be, but almost everything Galloway does is horrendous.

Well this generally appears to be regarded as a good and worthwhile film, (it reviewed well, in the main), I'd say in spite of Galloway, rather than because of him.

A large percentage of the film is interviews with people from across the political spectrum, none of whom are George Galloway.

Oblivion was on tele sat night. Seen it before, and it was slightly less impactful knowing the reveal but still a really good film - enjoyable to watch.

Hivemind - is it OK to like Tom Cruise (as an actor)? I do....

Top Gun isn't a good movie by any stretch, but it's watchable and that's the main thing. I think it basically lives off that "80s nostalgia" feel, and that's fine.

I love Tom Cruise (as an actor, obvs) - he may have his faults, both on screen and off, but you cannot deny that he always puts 110% into his roles.

Yeah, he's a good actor. Though I do feel mildly guilty watching anything he's in because I'm indirectly contributing to Scientology's coffers.

I think if you were to try and boycott all films that had scientologists involved then you'd be left with some pretty slim pickings.

That's true, but with Tom Cruise specifically it seems a bit worse because (a) whatever film he's in is likely going to see him earning a lot more money than anyone else and (b) he's such a massive contributor and figurehead for them that it seems worse than supporting anyone else.

It's a religious cult with everything that entails so yeah, I'd say so. They manipulate people and actively seek to disconnect cult members from outside influences. They'll also happily bring shady tactics to bear against anyone they consider a problem and the fact that advancing in their programme costs a hilarious amount of money just exposes the fact that it's a scam meant to make the church itself richer.

I watched Assassin's Creed on the plane as well - I forgot. Which is a good thing, as it's a shit film. I mean, really shit. There was one moment that summed the film up, where Fassbender jumps off a building and this scientist woman goes "gasp, Leap Of Faith", practically enunciating the capital letters. This clearly had no point whatsoever other than to shoe horn in terminology from the games. Avoid like the plague.

We watched a film last night, the name of which escapes me but it has Cillian Murphy in it, which was oddly compelling. A somewhat predictable twist at the end though.

Oh, Free Fire... that was it.

At the risk of damning it with faint praise, Wonder Woman is a decent enough film. It's head and shoulders above the other recent DC bollocks because it's not a completely po-faced load of tosh and the plot makes actual sense (which isn't a massive achievement because there's just enough of it to drive the thing forward and no more). Weirdly it's not actually a super-hero film for huge chunks of it's run time and is just a WW2 infiltration film that happens to have Wonder Woman as part of it's crew. Which is good because it humanises the character and the film in a way BvS et al never managed but is bad because it is slightly jarring whenever it does transition into the usual CGI punch-fest. It's not an amazing film by any means and it's got it's pacing issues for sure but it's watchable enough which, sadly, feels like a massive step up here.

You don't even need to look that far; the entire Wonder Woman film itself is framed as a flashback so yeah, you know for a fact she survives right from the very start.

Well to be fair I don't think anyone goes into a Superhero movie expecting the hero to die at the end, unless it's Superman but because Superman is Jesus we all know that fucker is coming back anyway.

And as Daredevil showed, killing off one of the main characters needn't stop you resurrecting them for a spin-off film.

Passengers.

Weak.

The pool scene was neat, but other than that, little atmosphere or tension.

I quite liked it. I just assumed in the first fifteen minutes that it was a love story, and it was rather nice.

He shouldn't have done it, though!

Just finished LOGAN, that's a very good film innit.

It's the first X-Men film I've seen, are all the others as good as that? I generally don't enjoy PG-13 superhero fluff, which is why I was specifically drawn to Logan in the first place since it is known to have proper violence, mortality and darkness in it.

That's largely why I've avoided them as they seem to be the sort of thing I don't enjoy, although I say that without having ever actually watched any of them.

LOGAN was great though, maybe I'll just leave it at Logan.

I do like Hugh Jackman, he's got very good acting chops. And Patrick Stewart is magnificent of course. (Except when he's playing a polite Neo-Nazi in Green Room, I think the man is just too fundamentally nice to pull off a Neo-Nazi.)

The whole cast was very good though.

Overall I give Logan 883/1000.

It's a tiny shame you've missed the rest of the films, not because they're very good (they're a bit of a mixed bag but pretty ok for superhero fodder), but because Logan is such a massive departure that it feels like the proper conclusion to a 17 year old saga.

I've become tangentially aware of the basic setup of the universe over the years so had a reasonable idea what the score was with the whole mutant thing and who everyone was, and it seems to be deliberately put together to work as a standalone film anyway really.

One thing that occurred to me afterwards is that the CGI is either really good or there's not much of it, because I didn't notice it at all.

I thought the CGI of the girl fighting (particularly the first time) was particularly jarring.

The good ones are:
X-Men, X-Men 2, First Class, Days of Future Past, The Wolverine, Logan.

Then Deadpool, but that's more of it's own thing.

It's sort of worth watching them all though. In release order.

I think having watched Wolverine on screen for 19 years really elevated Logan for me. I've always want to see him fully unleashed, but even though Logan delivers that, you also really feel the mental impact having been both a hero and a monster has had on him.

Edit: My biggest criticism would be about the moments where it had overblown hollywood fight scenes. The wire-fu in particular was a problem for me. The gritty brutal moments were executed far better for me.

"Life" is an ace sci-if horror but Ryan Reynolds is very badly cast but the film succeeds in spite of Deadpool's presence.

There's really only a couple of scenes I disliked which could have been edited tighter to improve the film overall:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
One done from an alien POV with some shit music over the top could easily have been cut. The other was the Japanese blokes death which annoyed me mainly because the film started out as hard sci-if but they're all bouncing around when this massive vacuum is sucking them out into space it got a bit daft. And for some reason they try and pull the Japanese guy back when he's fucked and gets even more fucked when he got a mothership sized alien on him. They could have cut most of that and it would still have the same impact and probably been a better film for it.

Nitpicks aside it's a really good film. I think most people will see the ending coming off a mile off but I still thought it was a bloody great end.

Get away from her, you bitch out of 10.

Batman and Robin was on TV the other day.

Cor, I had forgotten how SHIT it is. Everything about it is rubbish - apart from Uma in tight clothes- and no one in it really seemed to care .

These are nice ways to look at the films (and wow, it seems like a long time when you look at it that way). I'm very much looking forward to watching Logan soon. The Xmen films have been a mixed bag yes, but for the most part quite enjoyable.

If you want to see something amazingly bad, the Dirty Dancing remake is on Channel 5 this week.

It's almost impossible to watch, but impossible to turn away from.

I think I've seen that film, years ago when I was a kid. I seem to recall a scene of Batman and Robin climbing up a wall (it was painfully obvious that the camera had been placed on it's side). Oh, and a scene of batman running around, possibly on a pier trying to dispose of a giant bomb (cartoon style, with the sparking cord fuse). Regardless of whether this was the film, or maybe the TV series, I have fond memories of it and therefore it's far better than the Batman and Robin film - which is an utter turd.

So, nyah :p

Cor, I had forgotten how SHIT it is. Everything about it is rubbish

It's rubbish as a "modern" Batman film, but if you take it as a sequel to the 1966 movie it's up there if you ask me.

So, nyah :p

Yep, that's the one from the 60s. It's great.

I picked it up from HMV on DVD for about £2 in a sale, and it was just as glorious as the TV show.

I seem to remember at one point him also dangling from a helicopter having to use his Bat Shark Repellent against a shark that was leaping out the water to get him.

One thing I didn't realise was that when Batman and Robin are climbing the building each week the people popping their head out the window to talk to them were often celebrities boosting their career.

Might as well link to a video combining all the cameos:
http://stuffnobodycaresabout.com/2014/0 ... ow-cameos/

Quote:
Presented here on Youtube (until it is ordered taken down by some corporation) is a compilation of all the cameo appearances of celebrities who happened to coincidentally look out the window just when Batman and Robin were climbing up or down a building. They then would proceed to have a bizarre conversation with the dynamic duo. Bat Climb photo via http://www.bat-mania.co.uk:This simple stunt was accomplished by having Adam West and Burt Ward walk on the floor hunched over while the camera was tilted on its side as the celebrity pops out of the floor disguised as a window.

Some of these celebrities like Dick Clark, Jerry Lewis and Sammy Davis Jr. are still recognized by younger audiences today, but many are forgotten such as Suzy Knickerbocker. Take a look for yourself.

The celebrity cameos are in order of appearance on the video:

1. Jerry Lewis
2. Dick Clark
3. Green Hornet and Kato (Van Williams and Bruce Lee)
4. Sammy Davis Jr.
5. Jose Jimenez (Bill Dana – comedian whose Jimenez character appeared on many shows Ed Sullivan, Steve Allen etc.)
6. Sergeant Sam Stone “Felony Squad” TV Show (Howard Duff)
7. Colonel Klink “Hogan’s Heroes” TV Show (Werner Klemperer)
8. Lurch “The Addams Family” TV Show (Ted Cassidy)
9. Don Ho (Hawaiin singer)
10. Santa Claus (Andy Devine)
11. Art Linkletter (TV host and author)
12. Edward G. Robinson (the legendary actor was a well known and avid art collector who was on the 20th Century Fox lot to do makeup tests for the movie Planet of the Apes as Dr. Zaius, a role he eventually turned down, and decided it would be fun to appear on Batman)
13. Suzy Knickerbocker (pen name of Aileen Mehle, society columnist and writer)
14. Carpet King (Cyril Lord carpet merchant who was known for his TV ads. He traded some carpets to Batman producer William Dozier for the cameo spot on Batman.)

Yep, that's the one. The famous "Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb!" scene, as myp points out.

My favourite two scenes from that film are:

1) The scene where Commissioner Gordon, Chief O'Hara, Batman and Robin discuss the known supervillains at large. It ends in the line, "Joker, The Penguin, The Riddler *and* Catwoman?! The sum of the angles in that rectangle are too monstrous to contemplate" which is a line that I frequently use (or the latter part at least) when I'm talking about something I don't want to happen.

2) When they're in the batcopter and are shot down by one of the Riddler's Polaris missiles, and the helicopter crash lands on the incredibly conveniently located "foam rubber convention".
