I figured it would be pre-WIR so I'll wait until I see that to watch it.

It be 6 hours long, with 5 hours of walking around picking flowers and stealing candles in the middle.

Les Miserables - Despite expecting to like this I completely and utterly hated it. The constant singing almost every line of dialogue killed it for me. I just couldn't care a jot about anyone in the film.

Ah, but the majority of musicals don't sing every line. They have normal dialogue interspersed with music, there are actually very few musicals that are 100% sung.

Indeed. Most musicals have songs in them. This musical is basically a 2 3/4 hour song. And by golly that feels long. Even after an hour of it, my ability to endure it had decreased considerably. After that it was pretty much agony for 90 minutes.

Just watched Iron Sky. Odd how the special effects are general ok apart from the opening scenes on the moon. Enjoyed it though.. nice and daft.

Why is it me that gets stick for the artificial construct that I like musical theatre when Kissyfur makes comments like this? I can only assume it is because it is expected of him.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
The Sound of Music
Calamity Jane
Paint Your Wagon
Fiddler on the Roof
West Side Story
The King and I
My Fair Lady
Paint Your Wagon
Chorus Line
Grease
Oklahoma!

I might have to download a few and have a trip down memory lane :)

Ha! We own all of those, other than Paint your Wagon (which is so good it's on your list twice), Chorus Line and West Side Story. Although I've seen Paint Your Wagon, and it's brill.

Calamity Jane is also up there on the list of great musicals. None of them compare to Seven Brides though, it's just fantabulous. It's everything you need to learn about courtin'.

Chorus Line is brilliant, I heartily recommend it. How many musicals have a song about gonorrhea?
I was going to warn you about adult themes and how it might not be kid friendly, but as seven brides is actually about kidnap and rape, then as long as you are singing as you do it, it doesn't seem to matter :D

No chance. A musical has the characters telling major parts of the story through song.

Killing Them Softly was fairly good. Although I think that there should be a rule that if you're going to get James Gandolfini to basically reprise his role as Tony Soprano, you shouldn't cast anyone else from the cast of The Sopranos in your film.

Hrrrgh.

Look, it's very simple.

Musical = Film with songs specially composed and sung by the actors that delineate the emotions of characters and/or explain the scenarios in said film.

Film with songs in = Everything else.

Blues Brothers, although having musical numbers in which the Blues Brothers appear to sing, isn't actually a musical. The people they meet on their journeys who also sing, are not actually real characters, merely cameos. Now I'm not knocking the film, Blues Brothers is good fun and Cab Calloway is for the win, but no way is it actually a musical.

West Side Story is acebest and thanks to my friend Alice (who will never let me forget if she finds out I admit to this) I now have a sneaking mild-enjoyment of Sound of Music. I haven't seen Seven Brides... but it is in the library. I guess I should, then? I've heard Paint Your Wagon is the worst musical ever, however.

Wizard of Oz is the best. End of.

Um, apart from maybe Buffy: Once more with Feeling.

Obviously
