The thing that annoys me most is going to a CineWorld cinema and seeing the bit right before the film where it says "There's still time to grab your snacks from the foyer!"

NO THERE FUCKING ISN'T. THE FILM IS STARTING. SIT THE FUCK DOWN.

At my local Cineworld, that means there's still about 20 minutes of ads and trailers and stupid anti-piracy shit to sit through.

Saw Dredd. Good craic. Quite surprised there's no videogame tie-in, though - it's the most videogamey film I've seen. "Ascend enormous building to defeat crime boss" is the premise of literally every game ever.

It was the guy that wrote the book.

Coincidentally, this was just after Tom Cruise gave him a ton of money.

I think someone who hasn't read the books won't notice a damn, but those who have done will find it weird, as apparently his height and bulk are supposed to be quite prominent in him being so menacing.

As I haven't read the books, I doubt I would notice.

It really is (well, sort of - he's 6'5"). Reacher is a huge bear of a man, and it's insane that they choose someone a foot shorter to "be" him.

The books are awesome, by the way. I happily lend you the first few if you like.

Well yes it does in the other books.. He is a big hard ex Major MP.

It plays on him looking over crowds etc... not being a midget

I stopped going to the cinema about five years ago, basically due to the presence of bastards, i.e. any and all teenagers and children.

These days I just wait for the blu-ray release, or am just as happy to wait a bit longer and see it on Sky Movies or whatever.

I watched Ted.

It managed 3 good laughs over 1 hour and 47 minutes. Mostly I was just thinking how Whalberg was the wrong lead character.

Couldn't decide what film to watch tonight so went back to an old favourite - Die Hard With A Vengeance. However, it seems the copy I've got (part of one of those triple gift pack things) has an edited version of the film as there were a couple of noticeable cuts - the shootout in the lift and McClane's fight with Karl. Not sure what else was missing but it seemed odd when the film is still an 18, has a fair bit of violence left in and certainly plenty of swearing. Might need to get a different copy.

Scroll down a bit for the cuts:

http://www.melonfarmers.co.uk/hitsdh2.htm

Sounds like your version of this film may well be the original cut BBFC 15 version (which was also pre-cut by the distributor), whilst still being part of an 18 boxset (the original Die Hard has always been an 18 and the Die Hard 2 was upgraded to an 18 on video).

It's annoyingly hard to track what version of what film exists in which edition, although melonfarmers is very useful in this regard.

I imported Die Hard With a Vengeance on R1 DVD back in the day because I knew the UK release was fucked to pieces.

The problem with a lot of films of this vintage (80s and 90s violent action/horror films) is that on a seemingly random basis, the original cut versions may still get re-released as part of boxsets or on Blu-Ray or whatever.

Your best bet is generally getting Dutch rips off usenet, as the Dutch always go for the most uncut version possible, and then just stick their own subtitles over the top.

Thanks for the link. I tend to buy the films where possible, so I might follow their amazon link to the £4 supposedly uncut version. I've not watched my copy of Die Hard 2 from the same boxed set as I saw it on TV fairly recently but I suspect that'll be butchered too. Ho hum.

It's always a good idea to check on Melonfarmers before buying a DVD/Blu-Ray, you'd be surprised how much even Blu-Ray re-releases of older films are sourced from cut material. Sometimes it appears to be by accident on the part of the distributor, as whatever was cut originally has since been allowed by the BBFC but they use an old master as the source, or they simply didn't bother to resubmit the uncut version etc.

Of course, with more modern material it's a case of stuff getting cut for the infamous family-friendly 12/12A ratings, or the recent Oliver Stone film Savages, which could have been an uncut 18 but the distributor wanted a 15 so they cut a shitload of stuff out of it at the BBFC's advice to get a 15.

Piracy is arguably the best answer, specifically films ripped by Dutch groups, as they always go for the most complete version of any film.

I'd never even heard of the books. Just got back from seeing the film though and it was quite entertaining story-wise. However there are a few lines of absolutely horrendous dialogue and a couple of bits towards the end which I could see coming and were utterly ridiculous -

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
- To finally confront the expert marksman bloke and to then drop your weapon for a completely unnecessary fistfight, when you're not even sure you've offed everyone else first?
- The next scene where he picks off Emerson without shooting his hostage, without knowing who was in the building.

Still... Rosamund Pike is pretty.

Slim chance of that. I don't really have the attention span for books.. I've read fewer than ten since I left school.

Oh and before the film, one of the trailers was for the new Die Hard.. that's a certainty for me.

I saw that the other day and was squeeing like a girl.

That being said, a little part of me wants studio execs to stop raping the past.

That also being said, I've just enjoyed watching the new Total Recall.

With that having been said, I watched the original Total Recall fairly recently and bloody loved it and didn't think the noobie film was a patch on that.

Watched Source Code.

AE has explained why, but they should have ended it at the obvious point, which was perfect, instead of when they did, which was logical, clever, but less emotionally satisfying.

I didn't even think it was logical or clever TBH, as to me it made no sense and was really quite disturbing as well, when you think about the implications of it.

I've never known a film be so totally ruined by its last five minutes.

I preferred the backstory stuff, before the Thor on Earth stuff got underway. But then I rather like Norse mythology.

And Idris is a don.

I have watched recently.

21 Jump st. Which was brilliant. Didn't take itself seriously, lots of lol moments and was all round good fun.

Lawless - About the prohibition time in the US of A. Pretty good, a little ridiculous at times (Bane just wouldn't die, hospital treatment in the 30s wasn't THAT good!)

Ted - Family guy the movie. I found it funny.

After not watching any movies in a year or two, I've watched four in about a week.

Latest was X Men: First Class.

Thought it was excellent fun.

Yes. If you mean 'EPIC' in the same way as that insurance advert. The word seems to mean 'mediocre and tedious' nowadays.

And Super 8 is neither Flight of the Navigator nor the Goonies. They were quite original. This is a blatant tug on your nostalgia strings. The cinematic equivalent of Instagram.

Bit like "art director", really. Having been one I can confirm that, apart from the director doing mostly what they want despite your input, your role on set is just continuity checking. Which is unbelievably irritating when you can't get the case to stay still long enough for you to take Polaroids at cut!

AT LEAST MAKE A FUCKING EFFORT TO WRITE ACTUAL WORDS.

EDIT - Payback is an awesome film though, made somehow even awesomer and yet scary too by the fact that's actually how Mel Gibson really is.
