My Avengers boxset arrived today. Deliberating which order to watch them in - provisionally as such:

Captain America
Iron Man
The Incredible Hulk
Iron Man 2
Thor
Avengers Assemble

Any disagreements?
But Robocop genuinely is top notch genre fun and it's so on the ball with the sketched characterisations, the satire and the giddy enthusiasm that it's impossible not to love. And you're saying 'heavy-handed satire' like its not a valid thing. Quite a few literary classics are incredibly heavy handed on the satire - 'Diary of a Nobody' for one. Robocop should have been just a enjoyable piece of schlocok, but everybody involved on every level is so committed and bringing their A-game that something genuinely classic comes outs of it. I've seen some inferior Hitchcock films too that are no where near the quality of Robocop, in acting, pacing, plot or script.
Whilst I am not particularly a big fan of Hitchcock, I think you’ve got slightly carried away in your enthusiasm for Robocop there. It’s a good film and all, but it’s really in the same vein, and calibre, as a lot of other 80s films.

Quote:
And my big, big beef against remakes is not that they damage the original (as Raymond Chandler replied when asked if he was upset by lousy film adaptations of his works, "Why should I be? Look on the shelf, they're still there.") but that they drain resources and money and crew talent away from promising but more risky projects. So in the end we get a lorry-load of crap safe tripe cynically banking on special effects, a strong-but-now-creaky concept and old fans grumblingly turning up to be ripped off again because science fiction audiences are inexplicably one of the most conservative narrow minded bunches of fools on the planet.

Really? It’s people making remakes of old films that’s the reason that Hollywood churns out safe crap? It’s not the remakes, it’s the adaptations of books/comics/telly programs and the endless bloody sequels, Pete. That said, I’m glad they made the Avengers films.

True, Showgirls was a misstep, but I reckon if it was made in Dutch with a Dutch cast and set in Amsterdam rather that Vegas, it'd a be cult classic.

IMHO, natch.

Isn't that one of the biggest selling Films on video of all time? Or is that an urban legend?

Wouldn't surprise me. A lot of people watched Saved by the Bell.

I'd watch them in this order:

Captain America
Iron Man
The Incredible Hulk
Thor
Avengers Assemble

Get 6 TVs and DVDs set up and watch them all at the same time for the true epic marvel experience. Or the order you have looks pretty good, although I would be tempted to skip Iron Man 2 as it doesn't stand up well against the original imo.

I've actually already seen both Iron Mans (Men?), Hulk and AA - I don't seem to have a problem with IM2 as I thought it was only slightly poorer than the original.

Saying that it would be hard to beat the original.

I think I have ACDC back in black as my ring tone. :)

I watched 'Van Wilder - Party Liaison' this weekend.

Caused small amounts of chuckling after a few pints, mostly due to people eating dog jizz doughnuts.

Scores a 1 on the Craster scale.

I award it a C-.

I don't care about the edit -- although it is curious. However, that link had tipped me off that the US BluRay has a Joss Whedon commentary track that is missing from the UK release. So I think I'll import that then.

Apparently the sainsburys edition has the commentary (this is getting as bad as pre-order DLC) and is £15 today.

No it doesn't. It has a bonus disc that has a ninety minute documentary, which, by all accounts is mostly rubbish. I'm still waiting for my Sainsbury's and HMV orders to arrive.

Um, it is a cult classic. There are regular Showgirls showing in the states where people cavort in the aisles doing the stupid dance movements. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Showgirls#Cult_status

Ah, i received my HMV steelbook today - didn't really want the steelbook, but for 12.99 it wasn't too bad.

I never watch with commentary tracks (sometimes I watch the docos).

Cool story, but true.

I very rarely do, but I suspect I'd make an exception for this one. Whedon is a very entertaining speaker.

I had the HMV Steelbook and Sainsbury's exclusive delivered about fifteen minutes ago (to one cunt in particular, who'll no doubt read this, it may have been more than fifteen minutes, it may have been less but I really wasn't bothered about noting the time when my postman knocked). I wish I'd kept the Amazon.de order instead of cancelling it when I found out that release had been edited as I didn't realise the UK release was also edited until the day before yesterday. The German release was a Steelbook and included the Sainsbury's bonus disc, I would have saved myself £15. Oh well.

Image

I also have the Phase One briefcase on order with Amazon.com but that's been delayed until next year as Disney are very silly.

It's not really part of the Phase One series, but I like it, so I include it. It works as a loose prequel to The Incredible Hulk, anyway.

Late to the party as ever, but a criticism I saw of the purported new Robocop was that it looks like a guy in a suit, whilst the original more nailed the idea of it being a robot with bits of a bloke welded in.

And Robocop absolutely is a classic, by the way. I'm not a massive Verhoeven fan, but he really was at the height of his powers with that movie.

Based on that and other leaked images. It might not be the finished article and I am only repeating another criticism of it I saw, so we'll see. I'm not exactly excited by the prospect of a Robocop remake though.

Having looked at the leaked, allegedly-real concept art and the couple of leaked stills I'd agree it doesn't look great... but I think that's scant evidence to make a judgment on.

No, neither am I. It's in my "I'll get interested in this if/when I see some good reviews of it" mental bucket. So just like almost every other film ever, then. Where I seem to disagree with the hivemind is that it's not in my "I must take to the Internet to stop this sick filth" bucket. I'm not sure I even have that bucket.

Hello Butter lovers,

I have only just realised how long it has been since I graced your fair forum, and since one of your members has now been named the UK Butter Tzar by the most awesome coalition goverment and our fair company would like to get behind him and support him in all his future endeavours.

You butter believe it! Tzar Crasters free lifetime supply of the golden stuff has just been loaded on a tanker and will soon be on its way to him, that lucky man. It was partly the below comment which prompted his appointment by The LibDem faction of the coalition, he is a strong strong man.

If your interested please fill out a application on the HR section of our website -

Offering a free lifetime's supply of butter is a pretty bold move. You may be underestimatIng how much that is, especially if you think you can fit it in one tanker.

It has been a while since I watched Robocop, but that poster is suggesting to me he is related to the Cylons.
