I really enjoyed it. Really funny, and thought they did a nicely underplayed view of the bromance, and the portrayal of the corporate bullshit was really good. They also made me care, which I generally have a problem with, when asked to believe that the massive US side is the underdog (see TopGun).

Separately, thought of you when bloke in Spar told me, as I handed over my cash "I hate this shop". I said "but how would it run without you?" He scoffed, and said "Just two months till I retire".

He's doomed.

I'm not sure Ford were ever really the underdog. It's a strange one - it was more like David and Goliath and Ford were Goliath. They spent far more money on the GT40 than they offered to Ferrari.

What I wanna know is the reason why it's been released as "Ford v Ferrari" in the US. Do they not know that Le Mans is, or something?

It’s because in the UK you can’t use company names in film titles apparently, or at least, not without the company’s/companies permission. That’s according to an interview I listened to this morning with director James Mangold. It’s not an issue in the US, obviously. He did also say that they didn’t have a clear title while filming. And yes, it is unusual for the two main English speaking regions to have different titles.

The Madness of George III was renamed to avoid confusion in America as they didn’t want people to think it was the third film in a trilogy.

First Harry Potter was different too.

Wasn’t it called LDR in the DVD release or something though?

According to Wikipedia, "LDR" was only ever a tagline used for marketing

That's technically true, but in a lot of posters and whatnot the "Live. Die. Repeat" line was often larger than the actual title. Plus, apparently, for the home release "some digital retailers listed the film under the title Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow" according to Wikipedia. I certainly remember being left slightly confused as to what it was actually called.

Extracurricular: 4 teens murder people and one third of Bros tries to catch them. Brilliantly tight film that doesn't fall into many traps associated with teenagers in films. Well acted, well written and a cracking hour and half.

My neighbours daughter is back from London next weekend with her boyfriend. She's asked if my girls and Mrs Vision would like to go to the cinema to watch Frozen 2... Her boyfriend presumed we could play games all afternoon but I've had to tell him that I'd rather see the film.

Just back from Frozen 2. Felt a touch all over the place, but the kids loved it. Apposite message about climate change and the treatment of indigenous people. But mainly Olaf was on very amusing form, you could tell which song was intended to be 2019 Let it Go and I almost cried. BUT I DIDN'T.

I watched "The Predator". It was okay. It was better than Terminator Salvation and Genisys. This is an admittedly low bar. However, for a Saturday afternoon when there is nowt much on telly it is perfectly acceptable action flick.

I also watched "District 9" which is one of those films that kinda just never happened. You know, "I want to watch that at some point, but I'll do this instead this time, next time I'll watch District 9." It was really good, some of the effects are a bit dated but very enjoyable overall.

It was fantastic.

The only problem I had was that as they were aging I couldn’t help but feel that the man at the end was the real De Nero IRL and they had just been gradually wiping off his make-up through the film. He’s great sitting down or when he’s completely still but ask him to move and he just moves ‘old’.

What a film though.

I think the worst example of that was 'Rambo'. I enjoyed the film, but not the Mortal Kombat levels of spraying blood.

Hasn’t heard of it until it was posted here, so thank you!

I watched it last night and thought it was great but not amazing.

For starters it's too long and sags in the middle, it could have lost about 45 minutes for my money and been a better film for it.

The CGI is variable IMO, at its worst it was like looking at Daryl in Death Stranding, mileage will vary I guess, but I found it jarring far more frequently than I was comfortable with. (And did they really have to use CGI blood? It never looks anything other than totally shit. I mean, fucking hell, the money they were spending couldn't they have sprung the cash for some practical effects?)

Of course it's amazing to see so many great actors together in a film again, except sometimes it didn't really feel like it was them, just a bit too much on the wrong side of uncanny valley.

That said it all comes together for a masterful final act, the last hour or so is superb, and as it draws to its crushing conclusion you do feel like you're watching both Scorsese and his cast be as good as they've ever been.

It really needed to lose some flab from the mid-section, but still a great watch.

827/1000

Oh fuck yes that was bad.

I didn't like the CGI in honesty, the whole thing, it felt weird. I think it would have been a better film if they'd used younger actors, and then aged them using conventional make-up techniques.

To my mind the film would still have worked, the story and the meaning would have remained intact, with a completely different cast.

Of course it's great to see De Niro, Pacino, Pesci and Keitel all on the screen together, but I'd have preferred to see them just as themselves in a different film at their actual age. I appreciate they only came together for this because of Scorsese though, so they might not have done it for anything or anyone else. Pesci of course pretty much came out of retirement just to make this film.

Ahh well I can always watch Goodfellas or Casino again I suppose. And then HEAT if I want to see De Niro and Pacino in the same film.

I loved it also. The only thing I found odd was that they all looked too old when they were younger apart from Pacino. When Deniro beats up the grocer you can see how old he looks from the way he moves.

But fuck me it was fantastic. I've followed the Hoffa thing quite closely as my first wife's cousin told me all about it.

Fair play to the bloke out of This Is England too. A very well deserved role after Little Boy Blue.

It's one of those movies you only get to see not very often so I loved every minute.

Yeah his movements are what brought me out of the early stuff. Lovely how far the tech has come. Surprisingly only one bit bothered me when they're looking at the TV announcing JFK misplacing his skull fragments. The shine on De Niro's face was off.

Easy A is a delight and this score is nonsense.

On a related note, I watched Booksmart a few weeks back. It's fucking brilliant.

Watched Booksmart this evening. Wonderful. Perfect chemistry between the leads (though I couldn't stop seeing Jonah Hill once i discovered Molly is played by his sister), and really excellent supporting characters too. Jared and Gigi are particularly memorable. Totally cartoonish, but fucking FUN.

I may have cried a little too, but I'm always a sucker for coming of age stuff.

I watched a cracking film.

It’s called The Tower and someone on here mentioned it ages ago. It’s the story of the American Sniper. No, not that one, the other one...the bad one. Charles ‘something’ sat on a tower and killed folks with shockingly good aim on a university campus in the 60’s.

Flippancy aside, it had me in tears. It was made in a documentary style that mixes animation and real life footage. It’s really interesting as it was the first of the modern mass shootings but unfortunately it doesn’t have much to say on the topic. There’s not much about the the ABCs of what happened either but instead it focusses on the human element of the tragedy. It sort of misses a trick by being so anodyne but it’s interesting nonetheless if you don’t know about this shooting.

It’s not a “must see” but I can recommend it. 7.5/10
