I watched a film last night that made me cry.

It was "In This Corner of the World" which is an anime which apparently has some Studio Ghibli chap called Sunao Katabuchi who worked on Kiki's Delivery Service so you know it's going to be good. Also, it was funded from fricking Kickstarter! I'm endlessly amazed at what comes out of Kickstarter y'know.

Anyway, the film is set around the time of WW2 in Hiroshima and Kure. It follows the exploits of a lovely female protagonist that is typical Ghibli - nice, polite, always wants to help the children and elders and all that trash - as she's grows up from a young woman. Not to spoil it for anyone, but for a Ghibli-esq film it gets kinda dark because, y'know, the war and, um, a big fucking nuclear bomb. Yup, it goes off.

It was an amazing film. Heartfelt, deep, emotional - just like the best Ghibli films are - but this time the story is contrasted by the backdrop of war, duty and loss. With looming thoughts of North Korea, Trump, nuclear threats and Japan amending it's articles on war it's all the more worthy of your time and attention.

I'd recommend everyone of all ages watch it. It's available now at your local ["online shop"] or out on Blu-Ray and DVD at the beginning of November. Amazon has it for pre-order.

Actually Amazon also has Your Name (which is hands down the best film I've seen this year) on Blu-Ray on 7 November. So, pick them up, init.

Ghibli did do fireflies grave, which was really very dark...

Princess Mononoke is pretty fucking dark, too.

As is Spirited Away when you realise it's alluding to prostitution.

In This Corner of the World has actual prostitution. Oh, and did I mention a nuclear bomb?

Was it fun prostitution like in Pretty Woman, or sad prostitution like in Dirty Dancing?

Surely "Leaving Las Vegas" is the example of sad prostitution?

Just checked, it's actually anglicised as Grave of the fireflies. Just in case...

It’s THE BEST film.
Labyrinth is SECOND BEST film.

I’m disappointed you’d not seen it before. It gets better every time you watch it. Anyone who doesn’t realise that it’s the BEST film ever made is both wrong and may have poison inside them. Go to the doctor immediately and tell them that you don’t think The Princess Bride is the best film ever. Maybe they can save you before it’s too late.

Soz.

It's no Labyrinth. Just a nice film to all watch together whilst I nursed a hangover.

Why in the fuck would you let me watch that!? Jesus Christ, I can’t cope with two sad films in a row. It was a really great film but, by god, my heart is bleeding here.

I rather relied on you to know what you should watch. I did say it was really very dark.

But honestly, I only remember it in parts. Mainly that it was by far the bleakest thing that Nacchi recommended to me - I rather expected it to lighten up at some point.

Here's a few of the "highlights" for you to remember (spoils just in case anyone else wants to see it)

(NB it's an eyewaterer)

(You should definitely watch it BTW so don't look at the spoiler please):

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
In order of appearance:

Character dies of starvation immediately.
Plenty of charred innocent civilians from the allied firebombing.
Main character's mum is horribly burned.
Main character's mum dies shortly thereafter. The body is festering with maggots eating the flesh and the orderly at the hospital exclaims loudly in front of the son that he wants "it" out of the hospital.
MC doesn't tell his sister that her mum has died.
MC gets screwed over by his aunt who take most of his possessions that he was clever enough to bury before the firebombing.
MC's aunt is a bitch.
Aunt is more concerned with selling his dead mum's clothes for rations.
She does and then she refuses to give MC and his sister rice because they aren't helping the war effort.
Some other thoroughly miserable stuff happens.
MC's sister gets really sick.
MC's sister suffers from malnutrition and the doctors refuse to help.
MC can't get any nutrition because of the war.
MC finally gets some food! Sister dies before he can finish cooking it.
MC sleeps with his dead sister because what's he going to do the body? He's a kid. Dead corpse sister fully on display.
MC finally gets some fuel to cremate the corpse. Has a nice old time carrying his sister about and boxing her up.
MC shoves his sister in a sweetie can.
MC dies of starvation.
Nice bloke who is cleaning up the dead bodies of children who have starved then throws MC's sweetie can filled with dead sister in the garbage.

THE END.

I've read that the story is based on a semi-autobiographical account of the boy and that the scene where his sister carks it is accurate to what happened in the story. I assume that the scene in the film is accurate to the story which makes me upset just thinking about it.

There's no songs in Grave of the Fireflies.

In This Corner of the World has a song or two, which will also make you very sad.

This is correct.

I can’t see why kids shouldn’t watch it though although they may have questions afterwards which you could discuss with them, like, why does daddy hate us.

Thor: Ragnarok is excellent, go and see it. It has enough heft to it to carry the plot, but it's mostly about pretty much every single character being hilarious and it effortlessly take the crown from GOTG for 'funniest MCU film'. It also looks and sounds incredible throughout.

Yes, it is indeed excellent. So much so that I'm going to see it again tonight, in IMAX this time (3D, unfortunately, but they're not doing 2D IMAX for Thor for some reason)

I fear I found Deadpool only sporadically amusing.

Thor 3 on the other hand has prime Goldblum, can't wait!

I daren't watch Grave of the Fireflies. But 'Your Name' is out next month, that's my fave movie of last year and a lovely anime!

You must surely agree that everyone in it is astoundingly stupid and everything that happens to them is a direct result of them being astoundingly stupid though, right?

Well, no.
Spoilers:
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
The decision to head to the new planet was a sound one. It was closer, and clearly habitable. So good choice there. When they arrived in orbit it was clearly covered in vegetation and water, so a fantastic, and massively unlikely find. Yay for team Covenant.

Investigating a crashed ship is not an unusual thing to do – and indeed is precisely what happened in Alien, so unless we’re undermining the whole franchise, that’s not completely stupid either. So it was not astoundingly stupid to go and have a shufty on this new planet hat was only slightly out of their way and investigate the signal and the crashed ship at the end of it. So all good there too.

Biologist woman dragging infected man back to the lander was not completely stupid either – what else are you going to do? Pilot lady was right to lock them in the med bay.

David’s intervention was something that clearly came as a WTF, but they had an explanation as to why he was there – they knew about the missing Prometheus. It’s non-obvious that a synthetic would be a massive, massive psycho with daddy issues so following a familiar face was not insane.

The only specific two things I can think of that were stupid are (a) that pretty lady going off to have wash on her own and (b) religious replacement captain following the now-obviously insane David down into a cellar, and then sticking his face in an alien egg.

But you’ve got similar stupid things in all the Alien films – and indeed any film where anyone is in anyway in peril. That’s usually how they end up in peril in the first place.

One can only assume that's the approach they were going to take with the original planet they were heading to.

Well, I've explained why I don't think they were astonishingly stupid. Feel free to provide some sort of counterfactual beyond "they were stupid".

Also it was seeded with organisms that kill you mercilessly. An odd definition of clearly habitable.

Not visible from orbit though! Or indeed from the ground. And there was just as likely to be something inpleasant on the other planet.
