Oh, I think I read about that ages ago. Also that they are remaking The Mummy. Again.

At first I thought it would be horrible because the entire thing had been changed to a generic action movie in the jungle. Then I watched the trailer. It looks amazing. Definitely up my street, even though the original is frankly super, I can imagine that they exist in different universes and won't in any way be disrespectful to the amazing Robin Williams .

That's good to hear. I guess I just adore Robin Williams too much to have looked forwards to this at all, but if it's suitably different in tone that I can enjoy both in their own little sphere of entertainment then good on them.

Despicable Me 3 is... okay.

Wouldn't recommend it wholeheartedly unless you're taking a child.

It had some good moments, and some good gags (and feels) aimed at parents, but felt a little forced at times.

Or I might just be moody because my entire body hurts from doing sports the other day.

Kubo and the two stings is the best animated movie in ages, and makes everything Pixar have done in the last decade look primitive and amateurish.

I fucking loved it. I'm pounding the soundtrack into my ears right now. (Disclaimer: I am an enormous fan of everything Edgar Wright has ever made. Adjust for bias accordingly.)

It's interestingly not quite like his other work, perhaps because it's not an outright comedy. Still has lots of Wrightisms though, like tack-sharp editing, spectacular match cuts and smash cuts, clever juxtaposition and superb foley (eg. exaggerated swooping sound as Baby grabs his jacket and marches out of the house, which dates back to Spaced). Golly, what a bravura piece of film making. Kermode's review was spot on. Just the opening two scenes alone (first heist, then getting coffee) are some of the most electrifying cinema I've seen in a long while. And obviously the soundtrack is fried gold.

I wanted to watch it again almost as soon as I left.

But is it a musical?

Yup, I agree with all of that. It also has a lot of heart. I think it will be much copied, it's a rare example of style and substance that works.

This feels like Wright's breakthrough-to-superstar-status moment, I think he's going to be novahot after this.

Agree with that as well. Let's hope it sets the box office on fire just for good measure.

Wonder Woman is similar to Captain America's origin story but much crapper. Damn she fine though. But it's still crap. 2 hours and 20 minutes, though; Jesus Christ, that's far too long. It could easily be 40 minutes shorter if they cut out all the pregnant pauses. Still, dat ass. But crap.

Film: Crap out of 10.
Ass: Dayyum out of 10.

After reading this article, I watched War Machine on Netflix. Not bad, but although I like Brad Pitt, he didn't really seem the right person for the role. Not really sure it needed to be over two hours long either. Quite liked the cameos from Ben Kingsley and Tilda Swinton though.

Wonder Woman was better than the first Cap film, but Cap 2 was amazing and Cap 3 was really good too.

Oh, Free Fire... that was it.

Last night I watched 'FREE FIRE' which is by that Ben Wheatley chap who directed Kill List and High Rise, amongst others.

It took me a while to realise it's as much absurdist farce as it is shooty-bang thriller type affair, and with that knowledge established I was able to very much enjoy it.

In simple terms it's set in the 70s and involves the IRA buying guns off people who sell guns, but of course things go wrong, and they all end up shooting at each other, in a single location abandoned factory type of scenario, with a double-cross and snappy dialogue and suchlike.

Great cast, really nicely filmed and edited, Sharlto Copley is particularly good, not massively violent or bloodthirsty (it's a 15 although I'd peg it as a 'hard' 15), very zingy and funny, and all done in an agreeably compact 90 minutes.

You could do a lot worse.

The first one was a charming story about a broken man learning to be a human again (and something about a moon). The second was about purple minions and Mexican wrestlers or something. I dunno, I slept through most of it. Anyway, they lost the heart.

Minions are awful.

I liked Minions more than Despicable Me 1&2. I find the excessive minioning annoying and detracts from the rest of the film in the DM films, but am fine with it when it's the whole point of the film.

Oh yeah, I watched Edge of Tomorrow the other day after someone stated it was Bill Paxton's finest hour, and was rather pleasantly surprised... A rather high concept film for an action movie starring The Cruise. And, yes Paxton is amazing.

I don't know why they bothered putting them in DM3, they serve absolutely no purpose whatsoever.

I can't talk for 3, but they were used in DM1 like a comical interlude between scenes like Ice Age's nut guy. I was happy with that. Then they went sodding viral.

Yeah, but that's the thing, if you're going to make another movie to sell more Minion stuff, at least give them an actual purpose in the film?

(Disclaimer: I actually like the little minion people :p )

Just watched Bill Paxton's last film, The Circle, which is on Netflix (not that he has a big role). Can't say that I was impressed with it though - it felt like a fluffier and shinier Black Mirror episode with an ending

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
that didn't really make sense. If the two company bosses were evil and she'd uncovered lots of sinister stuff, then maybe,
but there was no detail given, just some secret email accounts. So she makes a point about privacy.. but is then filmed by drones while kayaks in the last scene? So it's ok to be watched if you know who's doing the watching?

I'm 99% certain I've seen Dispicable Me (the baddie looks like Joans, right?) but I do not remember the minions being part of it. I know of them because I seem to have spent four years blocking 'Minions Quotes' pages on FB, but I can't think of them in the same film.

As said above, in the first film they are used as filler and comic relief. They could pretty much be removed or replaced with a couple of generic henchmen and the film wouldn't suffer for it. It was only after the film became popular that the Minions Juggernaut got rolling
