Except if you don't normally use it, you won't be logged in - so you'll suddenly get a thread with scary things like avatars and pictures.

HC brought this home from work the other night, along with a few other movies she'd blagged from one of the review sections. Is it really as bad to warrant a Rev 5/10? I say that with the thinking that you are usually insightful but always, IMO far too easy on mediocre films and with this in mind I'm intrigued as to how fucking awful this could be. I don't think I should watch it as the original is one of my fondest childhood movies... Now, if they'd cast KeeeeeNU as Gort, it might have worked :-)

5/10 basically means I didn't start browsing the net during the movie. If a film actually holds my attention it gets 5/10. If it doesn't it gets a lower mark.

It's the Barb Wire scale. Barb Wire is the model for a film that just - just - holds my attention from beginning to end and my model for a purely average movie.

The Day The Earth Stood Still kept me watching to see what would happen. And what happened was rubbish and the ending is GNNNNNGGGGGNNGGG, but I didn't feel the need to pick up my PSP or iPhone or grab a magazine while I was watching it, so it fulfilled its primary function of keeping me occupied for an hour and a half. And I did like a few things about it. Gort is pretty cool - though the explanation of his name is possibly the worst moment in the film, which is saying something - and I actually like Keanu's performance as Klaatu.

Years and years and years ago, I think. It's one of those films I know a lot about, but I can't remember if I actually ever sat and watched it all the way through.

I saw Moon last night. It was pretty good.
I'm starting to get a bit 'bah' about this movie topic, though :(

I want to read what other people have said about it, and it's buried in 64 pages of other films.
Doing a thread-specific search for a word like "Moon" doesn't work that well, and I just read a spoiler about Inglorious Basterds that I thought was about Moon instead.

I see your point. The alternative is endless new threads about each film though (most of which would end up abandoned once the film comes out and is revealed to be rubbish).

I'm supposed to be going to see some sort of vampire film tonight. If I don't kill myself first.

We get endless new threads anyway.

Maybe we should enforce topic icons...

Well, we don't charge for them here, and that's how a forum works.

Fair enough. A good idea for the "big" films anyway, I hope this thread still continues for general movie rambling though.

You could always leech off the reviews of the actual films and archive them in another thread or put them on U2J

For every review there are 10 "I saw this and it was really good, apart from the excessive shakycam" comments, which are just as useful though.

Robocop (ITV)

I saw this and it was excellent. Some of the slang was odd though. Why is 'melon farmer' an insult. Also, dugs dealers must have bad memories, since they all seem to be shouting 'forget you' at each other.

Also, of course, Robocop is actually one of the worst cops ever.
The dude in the gas station he disarmed by breaking his gun, but rather than handcuff him he backhands him into a freezer.

It's really a fable about how using clinically dead cops in horrible cyber experiments will inevitably lead to horrific consequences. How about Robo shooting a guy in the nuts? On purpose mind. He could've shot the gun out of his hands.

I thought it was more of a fascist's wet dream of how things should be in policing. The bad-ass, perp-perforating programmed policeman showing the weak-willed, easily-cowed meat puppets how community policing should really be done.

Verhoven gets accused of being a fascist all the time, but being a Jew from Holland, that would be unlikely.

Robocop (and Starship Troopers) are both excellently done parodies of right wing societies, with the pressures and situations that that would bring. Witness the cops going on strike in Robocop for instance or the 'service guarantees citizenship' in Troopers. If anything, I think Verhoven is too damn subtle with his parodies, making people think that his visions are an ideal.

Fascist != Nazi, of course.

ST was clearly a parody, I agree*, but I'm really not sure Robocop was.

*It would have to be given that that's what the novel was, of course.

A UK version could have Robocop acting as a speed camera. A couple of miles over the limit and he shoots your tyres up.

Robocop is defo a parody. Look at the over the top capitalism and the back stabbing execs. Witness the awful, but totally ubiquitous TV programmes. The TV news that chuckles at pointless carnage. The 'Nuk-em' game. The 6mpg car (not admittedly a Fascist thing, but funny), the ability for a Corporation to run the Police.

How about an extreme Left-wing Robocop?

Directives
1. Be nice.
2. Don't raise your voice
3. Innocent until proven guilty and 4 appeals have failed and the European Court of Human Rights have turned them down
4. (CLASSIFIED*)

I don't believe they dubbed it in, I think they actually filmed two versions, that's why the 'toned down' version of Repo Man actually works.

Actually, that would probably be more like:

1: Declare perp enemy of the hero worker's state.
2: Torture perp so he/she sells out tainted capitalistic friends, send to freezing cold gulag.
3: Torture perp so he/she sells out tainted capitalistic friends - but if you're having a grumpy day, shoot.

Robocop is a Sci fi action revenge movie with strong satirical elements.

I watched Up In The Air today. It's really brilliantly scripted but I'm not sure about its final resolution to things and the suggestions that you're worthless unless in a settled relationship with someone.

when I was a nipper, we only had a playback vcr and only got the freebies from a short britannia video club membership. We had 4 films, Police Academy, Masters of the Universe, Star Trek 2 and ROBOCOP. I am intimatley familiar with these movies, having seen each one many, many times

I used to watch Aliens at least once a week, Alien probably once a month, Alien³ perhaps five times a year. I broke more Aliens videos that I can count.
I haven't actually watched Aliens on a screen for a good few years now, but if I am on a train or bus with nothing else to do I still often shut my eyes and watch it in my head.

Nuke Grim...'s head from orbit... it's the only way to be sure.

Rixondale speaks truth. I am secretly rather obsessed with that film. Curiously I don't want to buy it myself though, I only ever want to see it with other people. And beer.

And it is SO satirical.

When I was a kid I was slightly obsessed with Blade Runner, which was quite tricky as you simply couldn't get hold of it for love nor money. Strange as it may seem nowadays, it simply wasn't available anywhere I could find and if I had a quid for every time I had this conversation with a video store owner I'd be worth at least fifty quid more.

Me: Do you have Blade Runner?
VSO: (After a lengthy period of either maniacal laughter or nervous twitching)
If I had that movie I could be selling pirated copies at £50 a time faster than I could make them.

Or some such thing. This was in the mid 80s though. Anyway, I must have watched the movie so many times I knew the dialogue track by rote.

Anybody who is a parent of a young kid will know several kids films intimately and it's intriguing when you stress test movies to breaking point like a kid does, which ones you actually don't mind sitting through for the 30th time. I hate Pingu, Spot and any of The Land Before Time films, but it does get better as they get older and I can tell you that of the Disney films that stood the test of time from that period, Beauty & The Beast and Aladdin are stand outs for being excellent. In fact, Beauty & The Beast is a fucking brilliantly scripted film.

Anwyay, watched Lakehouse last night under false pretences. HC bought a load of Sky review DVDs home the other week and this was one of them - I didn't know a great deal about this, but was misdirected by HC into thinking it was a horror film. It isn't, it's a romantic drama starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. It isn't terrible as you would imagine though the whole concept is head scratchingly nonsense. I could easily see this being a very intriguing film if it was in french with subtitles. Unfortunately, it lacks any real tension as the central premise of two clever, successful in work, unsuccessful in love people developing a relationship (wait for it, this is going to be hard to explain) while both living in the same house separated by a 2 year time anomaly is one thing, the quite clearly implausible plot hinge at the beginning where one of the characters witnesses someone being mown down by a bus at the start and it transpiring.... well, I think if you can't guess the ending from that you're either five or you've not watched any films ever.

Still, it's short, and hokey high concept aside, the script is actually very good and delivers a group of characters that are clearly well rounded and thoughtfully realised. I actually enjoyed it.

Wasn't Blade Runner withdrawn from VHS by Ridley Scott for some reason? Or am I confusing it with something else. I remember I did have a VHS copy of the Director's Cut, but that only came out in 1993 (I'm guessing here). There was a US cut with trimmed violence around, but a young lad like me wasn't interested in that!

I don't know - this was between 1983 and and 1987 or thereabouts - it simply wasn't available at all, anywhere.

I was worryingly obsessed with Ghostbusters as a child. Without a word of a lie, I could recite the entire script verbatim at one point. I doubt I'd be able to do it now though.

That Daybreakers movie was actually quite good!
In a way, it's the last vampire movie you need to see.

I thought it was terrible, despite a couple of neat ideas. I put it to you that if you like the film you are in fact a nincompoop.
