Different timeline. Not related to any of the TV series at all. This is explained in the first film.

Is it not? I could have sworn I saw Leonard Nimoy as Spock in it...

Sort of. The parallel universe was already subtlety different before that point (Spock and Kirk not being friends, Kirk not being captain, etc).

It was basically a device to ensure they could do what they liked. I lost interest after the second film anyway, which was garbage. Still haven't watched the 3rd one.

I haven't seen it n a while, but unless it takes place in Spock Prime's universe then it isn't related.

I thought the timeline split when the baddie attacked Kirk's old man? Or I'm getting confused.

It was Nero not Spock who created it when he travelled through a wormhole.

I'll have to watch it again as it's been a while.

Nero came though the wormhole and attacked the Kelvin - which Kirk was being born on - and that's the point it split. The Kelvin would still have been the same ship, though.

the third is better than then 2nd (i know it is not difficult), but not as good as the 1st.

Yeah my understanding was that 09 starts in the prime universe, but it's an alternate timeline from the moment Nero's ship pops in through the wormhole.

Which in my view makes it the classic soft-reboot. Obviously very different in tone and feel, but with ties to the original continuity.

Ultimately this seems like it was a misstep, given how feeble their Wrath of Kahn remake was, and how they might have been better served by boldly going where no previous series had gone before.

Yeah, the first film was promising but it's been a missed opportunity really.

There had been a few films after and Kirk was dead. It needed a reboot, to start the films again. The Kahn was not terrible just not that great.

I dispute that it "needed" a reboot at all. And I usually enjoy reboots.

Yeah I mean I think the reboot should have gone further to distance itself from TOS, rather than having not been a reboot.

Edit: what I'm really worried about is the inevitable TNG reboot.

Unless they were going to just make films, along side the old Shattner ones.

Relatedly, this is one of the (many) reasons that I prefer the original Alien over Prometheus and Covenant.

I get that technology's moved on, but the fancy-schmancy LCD flat screens of the latter two films look really garish and not a part of the overall aesthetic, like the old equipment in Alien does.

(and yes, I know that Prometheus is supposed to be an all-singing all-dancing science/research vessel, still think it looks shit though :P)

It could be argued that you're pushing the definition of "fancy-schmancy" way past it's tolerance when using it to describe a flat-screen display...

Shazad Latif (who plays Tyler) was a regular character in obscure-but-good Matt-Berry-vehicle Toast Of London. (He was Clem Fandango, if you've seen it.) This is quite distracting. Still, he's done well for himself. He was also in later seasons of Penny Dreadful apparently.

I enjoyed the run of episodes towards the end of the season, but found the final episode to be a bit of a mess, and wasn't totally satisfied with the conclusion of some of the story arcs from the series so far.

I think the central plot of the whole season (Klingon War, Spore Drive, questionable allegiances etc) should have been spread out a bit more, so the mid season break was the finale. They could have given some story beats a bit more time, and mixed in a few more standalone episodes, where we get to see how the characters are in a different kind of setting. I'd have loved a few episodes that were classic trek probably with a new (to the Federation) alien race/planet, and some kind of philosophical/ideological challenge, where the crew just have to think through a problem. The Mudd episode stands out as one of the more entertaining episodes, a couple more like that would have been nice.

I appreciate they are doing something different, but I think in their eagerness to establish it as a new kind of Trek, they've perhaps gone too far in the direction of wanting to avoid just being the next next generation.

The final episode, and conclusions to the arc of the season as a whole, had interesting ideas, I just think it felt rushed. It would have benefited from being a two parter.

The very final moment, which was a set up for the next season, I really really didn't like either, but we'll see what they do with it.

The first season was a bit rocky in places, and there's quite a few areas I'd like to see them improve for the next season, but it's also done a lot of interesting things, and I'm definitely anticipating it's continuation (it is already confirmed for a second season). We'll see how it goes, but a lot of the heavy lifting is already done or partially done, and it's clearly found an audience, so fingers crossed it fully delivers on it's potential going forward.

It's a good article and I can't argue with a lot of it.

The last few episodes were definitely the weakest, and it's a shame they basically reset everything for season 2.

Agree with most of that, including that it was one of the best series of a Trek until the break.

I am still agog at how they treated Mirror-Uber-Hitler.

“Well, we shall let go the biggest mass murderer in the history of two universes. That’s clearly a good idea.”

And it’s not even that they did it as a response to her love of genocide; they even said before it that imprisoning her wasn’t fair. Fair? She’s literally the worst person in the entire universe! Why is she getting a free ride? At least you locked the bloody Klingon up!

They need to jump back into the Mirror Universe and get Lorca Prime back.

I think you're confusing Lorca Prime (who we've never seen) with Mirror Lorca.
