Doesn't PC MAME have a screenshot function like MacMAME? Very handy.

Two things :

1) Are you sure your not getting mixed up in the differences between "Bubble Bobble" and "Super Bubble Bobble" which are changed by a dip-switch on the game board (they run using the same roms) and swap the enemies from the first 50 screens to the last 50 screens
2) Up until 2006 i'm sure the 'real' bubble bobble game in mame was broken in a number of horrible ways and you had to play one of the many bootlegs (which did fire back) , when the blog post you linked to was made was when some of the other stuff started to work correctly in the "real" version , the main difference i remember from the bootlegs was a problem with player 2 not always getting their extra lives.

1) Quite sure. I remember knowing to put in a button sequence to swap modes in the arcade. Never knew what it was, mind, until a lot later.

2) Quite sure I know what I'm talking about - The bubble bobble on Taito Memories had this problem, which is specifically why I mentioned it. Basically just a point out that if anyones using an old version, they'll be playing a significantly easier version.

If you press F12 it places a handy-sized snapshot into the snaps folder of Mame into a subfolder of the rom name.

If you get to level 20 without losing a life , you get a secret door out filled with diamonds , same for level 30 and 40 , if you get to level 50 without losing a life you get a special warp (the thing looked like a chessboard so thats what we always called it) and it warped you to level 70 , if you were playing 2-players (which is how we always played it in the arcade) only one of you had to remain alive , that is until we got some of the cheats and there is one you can put in so you get the special rooms regardless of how many lives you lose.

Heres a starting score for me

Image

1579420 level 38 , just past my most hated level (35 - Jump!)

224190 for my first go (I lost my first life on level 2 :'( )
Nobody seemed to be shooting at me though. I downloaded the rom in the first post and changed the dipswitch to bubble bobble, is that right?

I'm running MameUI32 0.131 (the version Devilman linked to earlier in the thread).

It's the white thingies (see screenshot) that fire the pizza-type things at you, but I think they only fire when you're at the same height as them and they're facing you.

Yeah, they're the only things I remember that are supposed to be firing at me (I always thought of them as cookies rather than pizzas), but after two goes nobody is shooting me. The AI isn't acting like I'm always at the top of the screen though. I'll have another go and see if I can get shot at. :ninja:

Edit - Well I've scored 450000, but I guess it's irrelevant as I'm definitely not getting shot at. I'll see if I can find the right combination of rom and mame that will help me get killed easier. :p

Depending on the rom and dip switch settings its level 6 before they start shooting back

If you jump to where i am here on this screen the 'ghost' will fire at you at the start of the level

I'm using Mame32 0.104u1 and rom set bublbobl

I just had a test go to get those ghost things on levels 6 and 7 to shoot back. An errant water bubble accidentally killed everything on level 6, but I jumped around on level 7 for ages with no shooting going on at all. I've been up to level 16 or so in my proper goes and I haven't been shot at then either (it is only the ghost things that shoot at you isn't it? At least as far as I ever got when I used to play this).

I've added more to my post including a screenshot and no there are plenty of other things that shoot at you but they are much further off (including drunken gnomes who throw bottles at you and the little character that used to be in Zardoz's avatar who drops bombs on you)

What version of Mame are you using , what romset and have you changed any of the dip switches ?

I'm using MameUI32 v0.131 (the version hosted by Devilman in this post here
I'm using the rom linked from the first post
I've changed the dipswitch from Super Bubble Bobble to Bubble Bobble.

Edit - New rom acquired. I'm being shot at now. :'(

Ok, a real score - 300140

Well, I was up to about 450000 before then :'(
I don't necessarily think it was because I was being shot at that killed me, I think I got a bit lucky with the bonuses on that other go anyway.
Seeing as Mr Postman doesn't appear to be dropping GH:Metallica through the letterbox today I might have another go later.

I'll try and have a quick couple of goes tomorrow, but it's been a bit crazy work-wise lately (thirteen hour day today, and I'm working six days this week). I loves me some Bubble Bobble though...

Well if you enjoyed this weeks game , turn the "enhancements" on and have another go :

On the title page (the one with bubble bobble in the cloud) , type in the following codes :

LEFT JUMP LEFT 1P LEFT BUBBLE LEFT 1P- it will say power up at the bottom of the screen and you will have fast feet, fast bubbles, etc

BUBBLE JUMP BUBBLE JUMP BUBBLE JUMP RIGHT 1P-the screen will say original game mode and you will get the bonus doors whether you die or not.

1P JUMP BUBBLE LEFT RIGHT JUMP 1P RIGHT-this give you super on the title screen. You play the game with the monsters from the first 50 screens in the last 50 and visa-versa.

You can do one straight away (when mame starts up) but wait for the title screen to come back round to do the next

You should find that shoes and sweets will get you further if you were just a more average player , and if you can get to 20 you'll get the diamond rooms out even if you've lost a life already :-)

When i used to play this in the arcade i knew the first code , but didnt find out the second till much much later.

Oh, I forgot to have another crack at this over the weekend (not that I would have topped Zaphod :D ).

Well chuffed with second place though.

Also: No Dimrill?

Graaagh! Ruaaargh! Crappy fucking Dpad!

25800.

I'm not really a fan of the Pacman games at the best of times, but the Xbox joypad really isn't designed for this type of game at all. I think that's it from me this week.

I don't know about this game, but in P-M:CE the analogue stick is perfect for it.

It just doesn't cut it.

I might try tweaking the sensitivity (do PC users get that luxury in sys prefs?) of the pad. Some corners it feels like it's unsure which way you wanted to go.

I'll be trying it with a PS2 pad at the weekend but if it's not up to the job, I'll just use the keyboard instead. I should probably look for a Gamecube>PC adaptor though as I've got a nice arcade stick gathering dust.
