Just received the new issue of Retro Gamer, and beneath the Megadrive cover lies a (nother) 8 page feature on the good old Amiga. As part of this it lists a game as the best of each genre. Discuss

Best Platformer: Superfrog

Strongly disagree. Ruff and Tumble all the way.

Best Shoot-em-up: Guardian

Indifferent. Not a genre I enjoy.

Best Racer: Super Skidmarks

Mmmm. Preferred Lotus 2, me.

Best Arcade Action: Alien Breed Tower Assault

Dunno what constitutes "arcade action".

Best Adventure: Monkey Island 2

Fair dos.

Best RPG: Liberation: Captive 2

Excellent pick. Couldn't agree more.

Best Puzzler: Lemmings

Shoe-in.

Best Sports: Speedball 2

No complaints.

Anybody agree/disagree? How about Best Strategy: Dune 2?

I wasn't much for Liberation - I much preferred Captive. Mind you, I only played the CD32 version so maybe it worked better with a keyboard.

I didn't like the way your inventory kept getting stolen. It would've been awesome were it not for that.

I was never into RPGs, and I don't really understand arcade action. Usually it means first- and third-person shooters, but the Amiga didn't have very many of those (and they weren't very good).

Pah, anyone with half a mind knows that Harlequin was the bestest

Best Shoot-em-up: Guardian

Never played it, the one I played the most was Star Ray...actually does WizKid count as a shoot em up?

Best Racer: Super Skidmarks

Stunt Car racer, playing via serial link was a fantastic experience/

Best Arcade Action: Alien Breed Tower Assault

Personal choice would have been The Chaos Engine.

Best Adventure: Monkey Island 2

Can't argue with that one.

Best RPG: Liberation: Captive 2

Eye of the Beholder 2 or Hired Guns

Best Puzzler: Lemmings

E-Motion would have been my choice

Best Sports: Speedball 2

No argument here.

Tower Assault was the best Alien Breed game by some margin. Alien Breed II was far too hard, the two 3D games (while good, and excellent technical achievements) didn't really feel like Alien Breed.

Alien Breed '92 is just Alien Breed with more levels and no real new features, so doesn't count to me.

Tower Assault had a non-linear level structure, you could shoot while retreating... truly the pinnacle of the series.

I played a couple of the Alien Breed games a year or so ago. They haven't aged well at all.

Loved Harlequin. Gorgeous game and very atmospheric. But the controls weren't as tight as they should.

Alien Breed 2 sucked donkey cock as you couldn't complete it in 2 payer mode thanks to a too narrow bridge.

i thought it was a joke, but i was afraid to ask what was funny about it

Myp is right: Why no strategy category?

I vote for Populous 2 btw. I would go for Civilization, but it my cousin had it for PC and it was way better (read: faster)

Guardian was pretty incredible.

I loved Zool 2 and Oscar.

Pushover was a good puzzler, but not as good as lemmings.

Bubble and Squeak and Turrican were good too.

And now I feel old.

Shouldn't Rainbow Islands get a mention? Or is it because it's a port it's not mentioned. How about Silly Putty? Or Bubble and SqueaK (I think that's what it was called)

SWOS should be the best sports game BUT only just. They should have a category of best sports game on one disc. Speedball 2 would win no problem!

And Walker should be mentioned for innovation or something or other. I just really liked that game!

Guardian was great, but was it the greatest? I dunno... I always thought Banshee was better.

LOLOLOL. Oh, Retro Gamer. Superfrog isn't even one of the top twenty-five Amiga platformers. Rainbow Islands, Harlequin, Car-Vup, Fire & Ice, Naughty Ones, Parasol Stars, Blues Brothers, Titus The Fox, Kid Gloves, Switchblade II, Yo! Joe, First & Second Samurai, Toki, Nebulus, Rodland, Bubble Bobble, New Zealand Story, Chuck Rock, Putty Squad, Ruff & Tumble, Robocod, Flood, Great Giana Sisters, Another World and Qwak are all better games IMO, and that's just off the top of my head.

Superfrog is waaaay down the list, just below Rick Dangerous II and just above Zool, IMO.

Turrican 2 must be on the list somewhere. I didn't put it as my favorite Platformer because Retrogamer categorized it as a Run n' Gun. It's actually my favorite Amiga game, so now i put it on Best Plaformer and also best shoot 'em up.

And yes, Superfrog is way overrated. I liked the slot machine between the levels though

I liked Magic Pockets (primarily because of the hilarity that comes from kids trying to play video games by telephone), but it was a bit too slow to be better than Superfrog.

I was a Robocod kid, though.

Trying to think of the shoot-em-up I spent the most time with. SWIV and Banshee are both high on the table, but I think I got the most enjoyment out of Deluxe Galaga, simply because it was HD installable, and if memory serves correctly, you could replace the in-game music with .mods of your choice.

I liked Magic Pockets (primarily because of the hilarity that comes from kids trying to play video games by telephone)

what???

i liked Magic Pockets only because of the sheer amount of hidden goodies the game had. Every Bitmap Brothers game had this feature that made their games much more interesting

I liked Xenon 2 (I know) and Project X (I know). I completed Project X without losing a life because the game told me to and NOTHING FUCKING HAPPENED.

Gods was good, from what I remember. I didn't like Magic Pockets, though.

It was used on a kid's Saturday morning TV show where the poor unfortunates had to direct the main character by shouting "left! JUMP! JUMP!" over the phone to win prizes.

I did like the Bitmaps, which played into my liking that game. No idea why I bolded Kid Gloves though...

Datastorm was my favourite shoot-'em-up - a Defender clone that out-Defenders Defender, or something. I'm not entirely sure what I'm trying to say here. SWIV was aces, too. But basically I don't care what people nominate for this category, as long as no-one suggests Xenon II.

EDIT: oh, Grim...

loved Gods. The Megadrive and SNES versions play faster, but don't look as good and have worse sound effects.

Didn't they also do this with some Hugo the Troll games on the Amiga?

Yep. Except Hugo was controlled directly from a touch tone phone. Didn't make it any easier though.

they did that here in Portugal. But it was a case of using the phone numpad, not shouting.
