It's British Summer Time, that means the clocks went forward 1 hour!

Malc, if by some chance you haven't realised, your name is placed against every post you make, like all of our posts, so there is no need to write it at the bottom of every message you make. It makes you look a bit dumb.

Also, thanks about the GMT thing. I had forgotten.

It is pretty pointless these days. There are convincing arguments for putting the clocks back in winter (road accidents, farmers etc) and if you do that, you've got to put them forward again. I reckon they should just stick to GMT personally.

How many people in the UK are farmers, though? Ten? I don't expect the rest of the world to conform to my schedule, so why should they? Balls to them, I say. And as for road accidents, people should learn to bloody well drive.

Having lived in 24/7 daylight in Iceland, I'd fucking hate to have absurdly early mornings in summer. It's bad enough as it is.

Given that we're now in massive recession, there are finally seriously compelling reasons to leave the UK on CET this winter (reduction in fuel/heating/electricity bills, more 'light' time in evenings for spending, lower depression rates, etc.), but I suspect although the argument will happen, two farmers in Scotland will complain and a couple of people will scream BUT THINK OF THE CHILDREN, and nothing will change.

Author:  sinister agent [ Sun Mar 29, 2009 18:13 ]
Post subject:  Re: And welcome to BST

I never got that children thing. I liked walking home in the dark when I was a kid, especially on a friday. Grab some chips from lansbury drive (before it went all greasy and revolting) and come home and watch a bit of telly in the warm. It was miles better than coming home in the middle of the afternoon. Besides which, they have to do that anyway, because of a little thing called WINTER. It's stupid. We should just stick to a fucking clock and be done with it.

Author:  CraigGrannell [ Sun Mar 29, 2009 18:38 ]
Post subject:  Re: And welcome to BST

The argument against moving to CET is that Scottish kids would be going to school in the dark for a short period of time, whereupon they'll all be kidnapped by paedos and terrorists. Of course, the fact that dark evenings in winter results in plenty of kids walking back home in the dark from school and other activities is ignored entirely, as is the fact that more crimes happen later in the day.

I hate having every single phone, radio, TV, computer, electronic item in the house automatically update, apart from the Microwave, which is the only clock that I catch a passing glance at. And as I only have to do it twice a year, I always forget how to change it.

Amateurs. I went forward an hour on Friday crossing to the continent (under the sea!), forward another on Sunday, then back one yesterday (under the sea again!).

What especially didn't help was getting the Chunnel an hour earlier than planned on Friday, then yesterday half an hour earlier, but which then left 20 minutes early even though it was scheduled to be 4 minutes late.

I'm currently somewhere in June, around midnight.

Steam powered submarines?

I very much liked Stephen Fry's story on his Twitter of a flight to New Zealand where he lost an entire Tuesday due to long flight / dateline interaction. There was a little girl who's birthday it was who was inconsolable apparently.

Nah, just an underwater train that has to go through a stupid hole. What is this, the 20th Century?

Charl nearly shit herself on the way there when I flung open the driver's door to put the GB sticker on the boot, what with the sensation and expectation of the car, not the "world", being at about 60mph. Brilliant.

Perception's a weird thing. There's a reasonably long escalator to get down from Lime Street station to the underground station below it. I have to grip the rail so hard when moving down it to stop myself toppling forward. Because all the pictures are level but the escalator itself is at an angle I lose my frame of reference and go all vertigo-y. I'm feeling dizzy just thinking about it now actually.

The fact the train is underwater doesn't automatically make it 25 miles long and able to bend time around a car with the handbrake on and the engine turned off.

Weird, that one, isn't it.

You don't tend to have people standing on one side in non-London, though, so there isn't a clear line for me to walk straight up the escalator past them.

I seem to be one of the few who view the escalator as an aid to walking rather than a replacement.

I normally march straight up and down escalators, but that one makes me feel sick. I've had to sit down on it a few times. Odd really, don't get sea sick, car sick or air sick, but a fucking moving staircase gets me. :spew:

The first time I experienced escalator lanes in London was an AM rush hour and I was very pukey. Not good.

I steam up them too. I hate when people just stand there. Reminds me of a Jerry Seinfeld bit, where he disses people for acting like the escalator is a ride:

Well that's why you have lanes. It's officially a part of London byelaws that if someone's blocking an escalator or moving walkway, you're allowed to flying-kick them in the back.
