They can't really do a grunt's-eye-view of a modern land war though, because we haven't had any, and it'd cause a lot of bad PR (what's the Iraq one - Six Days in Fallujah?). Hence the focussing on antiterrorist special ops.

I'd like to see a near-future WW3 scenario, a la Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy.

Infinity Ward are meant to be doing some kind of science fiction shooter at some point, apparently.

Didn't they do a Delta Force Black Hawk Down game? That's hardly a shining example of US military success and I don't recall that getting much grief at the time.

Having said that having watched Ross Kemp in Afghanistan (which therefore makes me an expert on modern war) you don't get to see much of the enemy running around Afghanistan - you just fire a few rounds at some bushes then call in air support just in case. Don't think that would make much of a game myself.

That's pretty much how you play Flashpoint if you have access to air support. After all, you're trying to win without being killed here.

Much as soldiers in previous wars would call for help from helicopters/tanks/artillery/etc wherever they could.

I really enjoyed that game, overall, for some reason. It had annoying moments, and anything scripted on rails infuriates me, but I loved the feel of the whole thing.

Is this actually CoD6? I haven't seen anything saying it is, it is all just 'Modern Warfare 2'. I don't mind, like, but was just wondering.

Slightly unfair, but yes. It was for this reason I mostly flew ground attack stuff in Ace Combat 6. And why helicopters are the new daddy.

I read somewhere ( a games magazine maybe?) That Activision are now distancing themselves from that brand and going for the whole Modern Warfare series instead. I don't know if this means there will be no sharing with Treyarch anymore. Which could be a good thing.

It's so they can release one CoD game and one MW game every year from now on, probably.

Trailer has worried me a little actually. But I'm still pretty stoked.

Infinity Ward CoDs are my lady friends favourite game series now I think. She's played 4,2,5 and when I mentioned 6 was out this year she was very excited. So much so that when I pointed out that I won't be getting it at launch as it will be £40 she said "£40s not to much." This is from the girl who derided my hobbie to begin with. Mwa ha ha.

Neither of us think 5 is much cop. Nazi Zombies is excellent though. I'll be sticking it back on Goozey soon enough.

I've an idea for a Spaceship game based around that. You are captain on a battleship but it's more like a submarine. It's controlled on a 2D plane, and from the moment you jump into a system you have your 'passive' sensors that detect engine thrust and weapon fire and expand out from your position at the speed of light (repesented by an expanding circle).

You can also use your active sensors that fire pulses radar stylee (either circle or aimed) but they give away your position.

You have to choose when to power up your ship, move and fire.

Actual combat is more based around who fires first.

Activision have declared that they won't support any game that can't be a franchise with yearly update. Which obviously has made them my least favourite publisher. It's why they dropped Ghostbusters and Brutal Legend. The absolute dicks. And why there are now a million Guitar Hero games published a month (and why I now prefer Rock Band).

Hopefully MW and CoD will stay connected enough that they can have updates every 2 years rather than rushed crappy incremental updates.

Infinity Ward totally need to get a better publisher. Ubisoft seem to be getting that games need a bit longer to both build hype and allow for polish. Which is why Assassins Creed has had a two year gap. They also have a lack of ability to make FPSs...

What, like those Splinter Cell games they farmed off to Shanghai so they could bang them out year on year?

I thought they hadn't released a new Splinter Cell game for ages now exactly because of that?

It's interesting as it sort of ties in to what myp was saying earlier about it probably no longer being in the original CoD style of Jobber McArmyperson, instead focusing on special forces peoples. They did, perhaps, recognise this and change accordingly. Either that or it's just a money grabbing exercise.

It's also a direct sequel, since you're trying to take down the successor to the bad guy from CoD4:MW.

Do you think they'll put in any of the maps from CoD4 on the multiplayer at all?

I think that would be a good touch for some DLC possibly

I hope it combines the best bits of CoD4 and WaW multiplayer, meaning if you get seven kills a helicopter appears that fires attack dogs. And also, Martyrdom now sets off a thermonuclear explosion, instantly winning you the match. Unless someone else has Juggernaut, natch, in which case they survive and become joint winners with you.

If it did that, it would be the best thing in a video game, ever.

There must've been at least 5 soldiers in those bushes, else how did they get the ability to call in the air strike?

Bonuses like helicopters unbalancing games even further = bad game mechanic #2 in CoD4/5.
Being unable to call in your own helicopter because the enemy already have a queue of 3 to get through = Bad.
Small latency causing serious problems = defect #1.

CoD3 did it better - The scout class has an artillery strike that recharges every 3 minutes or so, targeted by looking at the spot where they want it to hit with binoculars. The amount of shells increases as you rank up (corporal at ten points, sergeant at thirty). Your rank only lasts for that round.

So you actually have to go out and shoot people (and with the trickiest weapon in the game, the sniper rifle) rather than use the power as a crutch.

Note that the Deluxe version of the game is all that minus the goggles and costs $80. So that collection won't be cheap.

CoDMod2 to be CoD after all. "No plans for it ever to be otherwise", says Activision.

Apart for the three months where they said the Modern Warfare brand would stand on its own. Belms.

That is awesome, until....

-someone blinds themselves putting them on and looking at the sun
-armies of chavs will now have the means to lurk in lanes and parks at night, stalking their victims

Still, I've always wanted a pair. I might have to buy a second copy as Kate will likely take them and never give them back.

It's probably be only for the Yankee Doodle Randies. British version comes with a broken pair of NHS specs.

Aha. That's extremely realistic. The Deluxe edition comes with two squares of bog roll and a replica rifle that ejects burning hot casings into your face.

Is it made from actual soap?

So that's the Official UK Armed Forces editions sorted then:

Standard: Two sheets of bog roll.

Deluxe: Bust of Soap MacTavish and a box of pre-wanked biscuits.

Prestige: Replica SA-80 that throws burning casings into your face, and then the firing pin snaps.
