I probably should have mentioned this... but if you use the preset class (the ump and mag with tac knife) once you unlock the magnum through levelling up every knife kill you get with it counts as a magnum kill... so you don't actually need to shoot anyone with it to unlock the knife attachment. If that makes any sense

It does make sense and would have made the 100 kills with the magnum much easier - but i've got them now anyway.

The only gun I ever bothering to unlock the tac knife on is the m9 as you use it in last stand so makes the kills quite easy really.

All I care about is that they don't dump you out of the game every time the new maps come up like in CoD5:W@W. My record in W@W was three entire games before being chucked off for not spending money.

Because thats means it is effectively 1200 points to continue playing online.

Extra info from Kotaku :

http://kotaku.com/5493218/modern-warfar ... lous-price

Quote:
Modern Warfare 2 Map Pack Also Features Ridiculous Price

Capping off a fairly terrible fortnight of news surrounding Call of Duty developers Infinity Ward comes word this morning that Modern Warfare 2's map pack is one of the most over-priced pieces of downloadable content we've ever seen.

Popping onto Xbox Live spokesman Larry Hryb's podcast to promote Modern Warfare 2's upcoming "Stimulus Package" map pack (which is launching first on Microsoft's console), Infinity Ward's Robert bowling revealed that the five maps - two of which are old maps being re-released for this game - will cost 1200 Microsoft Points.

Or, $15.

For five multiplayer maps.

Fifteen. Dollars. Or, if you're so inclined, £10, €14, or AUD$19.

Hoo boy.

I hope they dont mess it up like that but i guess they might - one 'linked' story on Kotaku about that very point

http://kotaku.com/5492963/microsoft-see ... dlc-upsell

Quote:
A recent patent application describes a process in which an Xbox Live gamer, invited to a multiplayer session, but missing a critical piece to play (a map, a track, whatever), is offered and may buy it without dropping the invitation.

There probably is something patentable in the technology that manages such an online state, which Broke My Controller spied yesterday. But to the layperson, yeah, this looks like Microsoft's thinking that asking a simple question to solve a simple problem is a patentable process. Lots of things are patentable in the U.S. I remember at the end of the Coors brewery tour they had a wall proudly displaying all the patents their engineers had been awarded. One was for a beer bottle shaped like a baseball bat.

So the news here is how we might see some changes to Xbox Live Marketplace. Here's the problem the patent application seeks to solve: Say you get invited to a race, the race is on a track that's sold as DLC and you didn't buy it. Currently, you'd get an error message and have to figure out for yourself why your session dropped, then go into Xbox Live Marketplace, find the DLC (and the correct one, if there's more than one track pack), buy it, message the guy who invited you to ask for another invitation to the game, and then join up. Lots of moving parts, inviting players to give up at any one of them.

This, however, has never happened to me, and the absolute worst case scenario put forth in the patent application doesn't sound like a very common hangup. Usually you know the people who invite you to games, and usually there's some communication about DLC if a map is required. But since there's an opportunity to make money off of it, damn straight Microsoft will optimize for that minority. Anyone would.

Still, I'm also wondering what happens if a friend's at T-Bone Junction in Borderlands, invites a pal to shoot up some Lance, and the guy has to wait for 20 minutes while The Secret Armory of General Knoxx loads. The guy with the DLC can continue on his merry way solo, but is it still a background download or is his friend in progress-bar limbo the entire time?

So this is probably better for dun dun dunnnnnnn .... DLC that's just an unlock key for code already on the disc. Great! Another justification for its existence.

I'm gonna get the maps anyway.

The last IW version of this 'franchise' worked the DLC very well in terms of just not letting parties that had at least one person sans DLC to play on the new maps. It was a good solution and one they obviously have the code for.

As such, they'd better not mess it up!

Also, please IW, can we have more Spec Ops as DLC? PLEASE?

This can get fucked. The CoD4 DLC wasn't worth 800pts as it was.

It doesn't though, does it? All it'll mean is that you'll get the messages 'myoptikakaka has not got the map pack' so we won't be able to play them.

Although this point is moot as I'm probably trading it in to get Bad Company 2, anyway.

Loads of people play almost nothing but MW2 it seems. For them and in terms of the hours of play they get in return 1200 points is probably not a bad price.

The case for the prosecution rests.

Four new maps plus two old ones for a tenner doesn't seem particularly good value to me. Fair enough if you do, though.

I'd be surprised if anyone thought this would come in at under 1200 pts on release. I wouldn't be surprised if it is reduced to 800 pts for one of the bank holiday weekends in May.

Would be nice to see what the maps actually look like. Shipment and Rust, for example, are hardly real maps, and I'd begrudge paying for 4 maps in a similar vein to them.

As an aside, have any of these types of games ever had some kind of random map generation? Not completely random so the whole thing is a jumbled mess but just something that meant you wouldn't just learn the map inside out from playing it to death. Then, if you hit upon a map that you really liked, you could note the seed of it to play it again if you wanted.

Sound plausible?

I listened to the interview thing with fourzerotwo on major nelsons podcast and there's 5 maps in total

Bailout which is an apartment complex with long sight ranges outside and CQB inside. Sounds like it could be quite good. (maybe a bit like bloc).
Salvage which is a snowy salvage yard kinda thing, has lots of debris, burned out cars, etc...and not a lot of places to camp so "intense firefights" can happen.
Another one (I forget the name) which is a load of warehouses transformed into a military outpost
and overgrown and crash.

Something like that could work for free-for-all, and to some extent team deathmatch, but the problem comes with the other game types. There's always a reason why the HQ/domination points are placed where they are - make them defensible, but not unstoppably so, make them sensibly spaced so you don't have people respawning on top of them the whole time, etc etc.

I quite liked Overgrown and Crash on MW1.

But I don't have Live atm, so it's academic really.

How could they make an infinitely tall skyscraper?

Still, nice effort they've gone to, doubt they'll be able to do it in less than 30 seconds.

This is one of the reasons Halo 3 is so awesome. They have new playlists all of the time, including a novelty one every other weekend with double XP. One of the reasons it has such staying power. More games should do this. Infinity Ward are making it sound like adding a new playlist is a huge task that can only be done with massive forward planning. Couple of months my bony arse.

Its time in the BEEX sun is over i think , everyone on my friends list is now playing newshootpeopleintheface2

When i started this up last night i sat in the lobby for a few minutes to join a game of team deathmatch , something which would never have happened just a few weeks ago.

I'll still be playing it for a while at least , and then going back to play MW1 and COD5 which i've only really touched on the multiplayer for

Give it 6 months and we'll be adding it into some type of vote thing so people can join up and play it online on a special night of the week when we can be all nostalgic about getting jam smeared on your face.

Live Activity from Major Nelson (these are normally 'month to date') http://majornelson.com/Default.aspx

Xbox 360 Top LIVE Titles (based on UU’s)

1 Modern Warfare 2
2 Halo 3
3 Battlefield Bad Co. 2
4 Call of Duty: WaW
5 FIFA 10
6 Splinter Cell Conviction Demo (Download the demo)
7 Call of Duty 4
8 GTA IV (Purchase the full game for direct download)
9 Gears of War 2
10 FINAL FANTASY XIII
11 Left 4 Dead 2
12 Just Cause 2 Demo (Pre-order game)
13 Forza Motorsport 3 (Download the demo)
14 Perfect Dark
15 Borderlands
16 Madden NFL 10 (Download the demo)
17 NBA 2K10
18 Halo 3: ODST
19 Toy Soldiers
20 NHL 10

I'd expect MW2 to drop from first place before the end of the month - have a small resurgence with the map pack at the start of next month then drop down the list.

Given the inclusion of a few SP games in there, I assume it's "Games people signed into Live are playing" rather than "Games people are playing over Live".

Nah.

I flogged mine.

But then it'll be a fiver second hand and you'll be all nostalgic for it so you'll pick it up and join in like the rest of them.

I think it'll hold it's price and I also think I'll get bored of BC2 before I get bored of this unless BC2 has 'an agressive DLC schedule' ;)
I'm trying to get my fill of BC2 before the map pack for this comes out and then I'll be back on this. I will be interested to see what I'm playing in a few months but I honestly think it'll be MW2.

If it does then yeah... but they do tend to keep their value as Gill says.

Are there figures to go with the rankings?

I doubt it'll drop out of first place for a while, especially if the new map pack integrates properly and not terribly (a la WaW).

Look how high MW1 is on there, and that's been out for a billion years(ish).

Nope - so for all we know the top game got played 10 times , and the 2nd one twice and all the others a single game.

Both Sony and Microsoft are always cagey about how they release figures for the online side of things and seem to be playing a game with each other over how to phrase things , Microsoft typically give numbers which have unique users but that does include consoles which have multiple 'accounts' , and they count silver users on the system.
Sony's numbers are typically 'users' and include people who just have an account on the Sony website

Microsoft often list the top 10 'xbox original' games played (with Halo2 always in top positition) and there were rumors that actually it was so far ahead of everything else that the others were a fraction of its total (and that was tied in with the reasoning why there is the 100 friend limit etc on live)

It'll hold it's value. I mean CoD4 was still 40odd quid new right up to the release of MW2 and now is 25 or so in shops.

Watched the new couple of videos on the dashboard about the new maps. Bailout looks nice. Lots of interior and exterior places to fight and looks huge as well. The others don't look as good as it, but hey we'll see.
