Purchased one of these in Jan:

http://uk.insight.com/apps/productpresentation/index.php?product_id=SAMCLP300N&cm_mmc=Froogle-_-PC-_-SA-_-SAMCLP300N&src=FRO1

Cheap and cheerful but did the job (well with alot of smell and noise).

However it's been having paper feed issues. Today Samsung told me they wouldn't be honouring the warrenty because the paper I was using was out of the printers spec (90gsm is apparently the max I was using 120gsm).

The printer doesn't come with a printed manual, doesn't have a sticker on it saying (90gsm max) so how the fuck I would find this out I don't know.

Anyway, I called them a few choice words and threw down the phone. At the price the printer cost repair isn't really an option (also when the drum fails the replacement costs as much as the printer new).

So I need a new colour laser. As I've discovered that colour lasers are a minefield I thought I'd ask you lot.

I don't do more than 200 pages a month (usually closer to 100), but I need something that has good print quality, is cheap to run and can sit on the network. Linux drivers are a must. The Samsung has been a costly mistake so I'm willing to pay more for something that will last a few years and has decent print quality. The ability to handle more than 90gsm would be a bonus as well.

How much is 'pay more'? Our HP one in the office is great, but cost £700.

Probably to high specced for my requirements. Whatever I end up buying, it's going to be at the bottom end of the market. Just not as bottom end as the BASTARD SAMSUNG!!!!

I'm also not that keen on HP either, although the print engine inside my CD printer is HP.

Did a manual come on CD? (and did that mention the gsm max?) Because if it doesn't then surely you are within your rights to ask for your money back?

The manual is indeed on CD.

My plan is just to knacker the ink out on this printer and then replace it. By the time I get to 2000 prints the drum will need replacing anyway and that is nigh on 100 quid for a printer than only cost £130.

At the moment the blasted thing is printing as happily as well. Bastard machine.

Can't you call back and say 'whoops, my mistake, it was 90GSM after all!'?

How well did that work with your weekly oil checks?

Don't, it's back there again because the toe-in on the front wheels is all fucked up and (perhaps because of) the ediff keeps putting all the power to the front wheels.
Still, when I told them about the 90GSM paper they at least paused for a bit.

They'll know from when I first called them 2 weeks back. They already had the support case on file when I called up today.

2 weeks ago I got a nice friendly chap who wanted to help, today I got a stern foriegn man. I may now be on some kind of black list as his point blank refusal to help resulted in me calling him a (not very nice gentleman - Ed) and slamming the phone down. Today has not been a good day (no excuses, etc).

At the moment I'm on a 90 page print job and the bastard thing is fine. Even the bad smell has stopped. I took it apart earlier to see if there was anything I could fix myself and it seems happy with the new paper. A few grunting noises here and there but it's fine. Perhaps the 120gsm paper had somehow gummed the rollers up or something?

Run some 60gsm paper for a bit and then call them back in a couple of months with your new average?

I've got a samsung mono printer and that's having a lot of paper feed issues as well! Must be similar or the same paper feed. Worst thing about it is that it isn't easy to unstuck it. Very bad design.

Have you been using paper higher than 90gs?

Take the entire thing apart, shake it around abit, blow compressed air into all the holes around the paper feed and put it back together again.

Appears to have worked for me. For now.....

To add more hillarity to the Samsung debacle, the printer driver offers options for "thick paper" and "card". Presumably by using either you invalidate your warrenty.

Did you try using either of those options? They cause the printer to operate at different speeds and with different fuser temperatures to better suit the paper weight being used, so the thicker paper should work better with one of those settings.

The difference was only slight.

And of course, using greater than 90gsm paper invalidates the warrenty anyway so why the hell they offer a "thick" option in the driver lord only knows.
