If today is Wednesday the 25th of March, is "Next Saturday" the 28th of March or the 4th of April?

I've gone for 4 April. Here's how I see it.

This Saturday (28 March) I'm going shopping
Next Saturday (4 April) I'm mowing the lawn.
Last Saturday (21 March) I killed a rat.

Just sounds clearer, I think.

"Saturday" is the 28th

"Next Saturday" is the 4th

Or that's how I'd always understand it if someone said to me "Yeah I'll see you on Saturday" or "Yeah I'll see you next Saturday"

Technically the 28th March, but with today being so close to that date, if you say "Next Saturday" I'd probably take you to mean the 4th April.

This Saturday is the 28th, so next Saturday is the 4th. Granted, this is 'wrong', but it's the way I do it.

I chose 4th

I always say 'This Saturday' if I mean the one coming up, or 'Next Saturday' for the one after

I agree with Shin, Grim..., Zaphod, and Kern. My wife disagrees, but she's wrong in the head.

English is so imprecise sometimes.

You should have known that the day she stopped being 'your girlfriend'.

Yup, I would have gone with the 28th being both this Saturday and next Saturday as being the correct way to term it, with 4 April being the Saturday after next.

You are wrong.

By which I mean you are wrong to say it is wrong.

Because you are right.

This = 28th
Next = 4th

This is the correct way.

I agree, but it's not 'correct' in the English sense, which would say the next Saturday is the 28th.

'Next Saturday' and 'The Next Saturday' are different things, mind.

I always read 'next saturday' as shorthand for 'Saturday of next week'.

People who think that next Saturday is the 28th are probably the same nutters who think the week starts on a Sunday.

Anti-semite.

Yep, next Saturday is the 4th.

Chinny, how long have you been keeping that picture in reserve for?

I weep for the world.

Imagine there is a row of hundreds of boxes, numbered A-G (repeating) and you were sat on box D. Someone asks you to move to the next 'F' box. You don't skip the first 'F' you come across surely?

Again, "The next F" and "next F" are different, and the analogy is pants because it doesn't have the week concept which is ingrained into our understanding of dates.

Do you know, I might. I'd certainly ask for conformation.

"The next left", however, is the one coming up.

[edit]Unless the one coming up is nearby, in which case it's the one after it. Complicated stuff.

This is the correct way.

I agree, but it's not 'correct' in the English sense, which would say the next Saturday is the 28th.

I disagree. My English teachers certainly used it in this fashion.

That said, it is possible that the 'correct' way is that 'this and 'next' refer to the week. As such, "Next Tuesday" is the 31st, as opposed to the 7th.

But 'Next Saturday' would NEVER be the 28th.

Anyway, people should refer to the 28th correctly, as "Curiosity's birthday".

Look at this way: how do you refer to the-week-you-are-in and the-week-that-is-coming? I, like any right-minded chap, am currently in this week (after leaving last week) and will be proceeding into next week. Same with days of the week - the approaching day-of-week is this, the following is next. Simples.

Imagine my confusion with this sort of thing, being in Scouseland where in addition to being wrong about this, "tonight" means both "tonight" and (by some fucking inscrutably insane logic that even they can't explain coherently) "last night." Raving mentalists the lot of them.

Quite what this makes me, having voluntarily taken up with one of them, who knows.

I always use "a week on saturday" rather than "next saturday" just to prevent exactly this type of confusion.

The Saturday coming next is next Saturday, we don't need a thread about it, or a poll. And Orwell would agree with me on this, so I'm right.
