Oh absolutely. What else can be expected when communities are left to rot with no jobs available, and no assistance to move, or help to create jobs? Specifially though, it's a mix of this, caused by Thatcher, and an acceptance by many other politicians that leaving people on benefits for years is in any way helpful, when all it does is create a culture of boredom and dependence, which is now spreading into it's third generation.

The development of an underclass is a known side effect of the form of free market economics that we have, this was identified as a symptom even before the widespread introduction of these policies in New Right writings in the 70s. In any society there will be those without the skills, opportunity or the inclination to work and as time goes on these people have kids and will socialise them into a certain way of thinking that will be hard to break out of. Now I know Chav is not the same thing as an underclass (lets face it there are a lot of tasteless and crass celebs and footballers out there) but often they are used in a way that makes them synonomous (SP?).

And the above is true even before the dismantling of the manufacturing sector, desctruction of the coal industry, selling off the remaining family silver in the form of North Sea oil / gas and generally fucking everyone over not living in the South East / M4 Corridor.

the chav epidemic is also spreading here also. I know who's to blame (agreed with morte). While chavs are also common in Spain and France, they're still rare in northern europe. That's what i call development.

I think of chavs as unpleasant scumbags who go around everywhere with a "what the fuck you looking at?" scowl on their thick looking stupid faces and enjoy starting pointless fights. A state of mind rather than a dress code.

This. Actual "thickness", by which I assume retardedness is meant, is a tragedy. Someone refusing to learn anything, basic wilful ignorance if you like, is to me unacceptable and unforgivable. This is especially true nowadays, when any information you could dream of having is literally at your fingertips.

Also, as what clothing a person wears is completely a choice, you can tell a large amount about someone's character by it.

I'm assuming, on the basis of experience, that he's unlikely to have bothered working much in school. He's further and relatedly unlikely to have bothered to get a job and instead decided to sponge off of my tax money (and pregnant girlfriend = council house. Aces!). Always an indicator of someone of great character, that, isn't it?

He's also more likely than, say, Dr A to punch someone in the face randomly on a Friday night in Croydon in a "what are you looking at?" stylee.

Sorry, but stereotypes arise due to experiences. Whilst not all people who dress like that are likely to be yobbish scrounging pricks, it's a fair bet that they are. I've known enough of them to happily take this position.

The reason I make negative assumptions about people who look like that is that, in my experience, many people who dress like that are utter hateful cunts, and those that aren't think that the utter hateful cuntery of the others is funny and acceptable. Fuck the lot of them, I've no time for anyone who chooses to act like a scumbag, or who provokes others to do so. Also in that picture, it's not just the clothes, it's the expressions on their faces, the raised middle finger, basically the fact that that impression is the one they choose to put across.
