A bit late to reply, because you've already seen him by now, but I do hope he has moved back towards "being good" as opposed to "boasting about how he's been smashing the system by annoying receptionists and desk sergeants". In the days of Channel Four's Saturday Zoo (which badly needs to be put on UKNova), Viva Cabaret (ditto) and the first series of Comedy Product, he was Very Good Indeed. Since then: at best, a largely uninspired Rob Newman tribute act.

he wasn't great. it was lots of boasting about things he's done with some okay gags thrown in there. he kept putting on a post accent for effect and it got tiresome.

glad I saw him, not sure I'll bother again though.

Listening to it now, it's not too bad at all. It's not a soundboard recording, it's a mic in the crowd. Perfectly audible and the crowd buzz is very good.

That is a real shame. I've not seen Mark Thomas live since he began doing the TV shows (so about 10 years) but when he was doing the 'straight' stand up he was without doubt the best and most filthy (these two things may be connected) British comedian of his generation.

Post subject:  Re: Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle

I thought I really rather liked Stewart Lee's shtick before this series aired but, the religion episode aside*, I've struggled with it. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but a recurring theme seems to be that literature is inherently more worthwhile than pulp and aren't we, the enlightened who understand such things, oh so superior. And while one can forgive a sixth-former his/her desperate need to maintain that point of view, for a forty (fifty?) year old man it's a bit... lame. Collins and Herring (I know) FTW!

*Because, I would say, criticising religion is a matter of rationalism (yaay!) rather than elitism (boo!), so that episode didn't jar like the ones I found irrationally elitist (triple boo!)

On the basis of this thread I watched the religion episode last night on the YouTube and I have to say I was entirely underwhelmed. The video spots were unfunny to the last, and the stand-up was just a bit "meh". And I say this as a big SLee fan.

However, this thread has prompted me to check out Collins and Herring, which is brillopads. So on balance this thread is made of Win.

I'm really the only person who finds that podcast completely unbearable, then? Richard Herring's occasionally funny but you have to wade through a LOT of tedious dross to get to it while Andrew Collins, like his mum, is a fucking idiot.

Sorry -- I feel a mite responsible for that. It occurred to me today that my view might've been spoiled by Fist Of Fun because I am, essentially, watching half an act as far as my brain is concerned.

Rodafowa wrote:

It did nearly go horribly wrong at one point -- there's a spate of episodes towards the start where they're basically just shouting at each other and it's all a bit much. It makes a nice change from some of the heavier poddies I listen to, though, which is quite handy as I listen to podcasts practically all day.

Of course, this wasn't helped by reading that article about his 'Del-boy falling through the bar' bit. How dare he take shots at one of the finest pieces of physical comedy seen on British television? Fucking smug-faced cunt. I mean, its no longer as funny as it once was, but if you take any piece of comedy and rip its screaming form from the womb of context and force it to repeat itself twelve million times... Well, little can survive that. See also most of Python's famous stuff.

It took a while to warm up (about 13 episodes), but considering it's two blokes making stuff up as they go along, it's highly entertaining.

Isn't that, like, the irony/point of Lee's entire bit on the subject? I'm concerned that I may have jumped into some sort of multi-layered irony-fest here, and may have missed the point of Pundabaya's point. Or something.

But anyway, I thought last night's episode was alright. Hoping it gets better.

Also, excellent work getting quoted on his site! I can't believe we haven't had an influx of new members as a result, though...

Thanks to Dimrill, I saw this last night. I'd seen the material already, on his test run tour (albeit delayed until after he'd filmed the programme), but laughed more last night. Seeing his chubby little face helped, as did the excellent bits with Iannucci. I love Stewart Lee.

fist of fun has been cut by the bbc though :(

Quote:
the cuts are:

- Episode 3 - Lady Diana segment
- Episode 4 - Parents suing a theatre segment
- Episode 5 - Reference to the child in episode 4

We’ve also removed the obsolete bbc email, post and web addresses from the end of each episode and the address of the newsagent that Peter visits.

And from the video podcast:

- reference to drug taking TV executives
“Stand-up” Stew’s opinion of his poor treatment by the bbc
- bit where Rich said Stew would lose his audience if he had sex with a child
- section mentioning Alan Partridge rights
- the section where they talk about buying back Fist of Fun for 2/3rd what the bbc paid them to do it in the first place
