Hiya red ring sufferers

I am fortunate enough to own an Xbox 360 that hasnt red ringed.
However, an ex colleague was less so fortunate, and instead of fixing it, he decided to buy a PS3 and give me the broken Xbox.

Now, its strange one, as occasionally it will boot up, but it does hang. this is about 1 in 20 times. The drive door is also sticky, you need to fiddle/tap the case to get it to eject. Other than that, its a free Xbox.

So, I registered the hardware, its got about 1 month of the 3 year red ring warranty left.
I have received two emails now. One saying Ill get either a box shipped to me or a label, or both, or an email label. And then an email label.

Now the questions:

Do I have to package the console and take it to the UPs depot (of which there are two near me, and by near me, I mean requiring at least a 15 min car journey) or can I ask them to pick it up off me?

Secondly, will they send me a refurbished box, or will they actually fix this one? Its a 2006 model, with no HDMI, so I'd love a refurbed HDMI model. whats peoples experiences?

thanks Im sure its been discussed before but not for a while.

They'll pick it up off you, they rang me to arrange a collection but you may need to ring them.

They'll fix that one if it's possible, if not then they'll send you a refurb. 99 times out of 100 they can fix the original one though.

Do they essentially jsut perform the Xclamp mod on them?
Hoping they fix the drive as well.

If they pick it up, will they give me a box, or do i have to have it prepared?

Cheers!

I'd seriously hope not, that doesn't seem like a very convincing fix for a cracked BGA.

Usual repairs are replacement mobo and DVD drive. Turn around time is usually about ten days. They can email a label for you to print and you buy a box and package it yourself - they're funny about using the original box for both security reasons and that it won't get sent back in it either. UPS will pick it up and return it - they will give tracking details via the xbox and UPS sites. It's quite slick, but then they are well practiced.

Tell me about it

Well, ive boxed it up in the PS3 box he gave me it in :)

Well padded with bubble wrap and newspaper.
Its a Premium too, with hard drive - he is just a no nonesense kinda guy though, think he wanted a bluray player too, more of a casual gamer.

I figured it was out of waranty and hence giving it away, but I was freely able to register the hardware and get it repaired. Otherwise I had a friend lined up to do the xclamp on it for me.

Result Lace!

Unfortunately for me my friends are thick, but just too tight to give me good stuff.

See, that's insane. It's going to Microsoft, any thieving UPS guy is going to know you wait until it's coming from Microsoft.

I think the repairs they're doing now rectify the problem completely which wasn't always the case. Also, the PS3 is a nice machine and an excellent DVD/Bluray but it isn't compelling enough as a games machine IMO. Not yet.

Yes Ive been considering re-buying a PS3 - I used to have one.

Fancy it for the Blu Ray capabilities, plus there are some exclusives I'd play.
Got offered a brand new sealed 80GB with LBP for £260..is that good?
It seems now the new PS3 dont even offer sw emulation for PS2, as such, no games will play on them, which is even more crap if that were possible

You won't get HDMI. What they will do is open up your console, remove the guts (mobo and DVD drive), and throw them on the "to be refurb" pile. Then they pick up a DVD drive and mobo from the "recently refurbed" pile, put them in your Xbox, and ship it back. Possibly, those motherboards and DVDs are new, rather than refurbed, I don't think anyone knows for sure. It'll never have HDMI though, as your 360's case doesn't have a cutout for the port.
