I played Warcraft for a month. Thought it was rubbish. Stopped. I prefer City of Heroes. The community was much nicer.

I played COV and didn't really see any community..it's a fun game but it doesn't hold my attention for more than a week or so, there's nothing much to do imo.

City of Villains lacks community. It's more of a single player game played online. City of Heroes however requires much more teamwork and seems to have more of a community and sense of fun. The numbers are dwindling there though unfortunately.

I play WoW, and have done for far too long, but I keep it casual. I've been through the 'must play and get the best stuff available', while trying to ignore the real-life problems of not having a job and being pretty depressed. I'm out the other side of that now, though, so all is good.

I've found myself a lovely guild, made of up older people with families; people mostly in their 30s, with some in their 50s, and one lovely chap in his 70s. It's quite possible to find non-twats online, but you need to shut your eyes & ears, shout 'la la la', and look for them yourself.

Oh, and stay out of the world chat channels. Unless you want to hear how much of a 'homo' X person is, don't go near the trade channel.

Reading the title and opening post of this thread I would have argued that WoW carrying a health warning was an absolutely silly idea and completely pointless, but reading through the posts here I am really surprised at the amount of people on this relatively small board that say that they have played to an extreme amount and have trouble putting it down, either in the past or presently. I honestly did not think that this would be a problem for anything but perhaps one or two oddball cases, somewhere across the globe that the media may have hyped to be something it isn't - probably in an article by Anne Diamond. I would never have thought of videogames to be addictive to normally functioning adults - I once had a very loooong game of Animal crossing for many hours because it took me about three quarters of an hour to get the Freeloader to work when I imported teh game and didn't think that I'd ever get it to work again :p but I have never found it in the slightest bit difficult to put a game down or not to play for a few days/weeks. Obviously, though, there does seem to be a problem with some people, and it's a bit unnerving as it's something that I have never thought was 'real', as it were.

And if you play a horde, don't listen to 'barrens chat' *shudder*

There are some really nice people and mature people that do play WoW, sadly it's overrun with kids and makes them a little harder to find a result.
I've found a couple of great guilds and a couple of communities for smaller guilds to give their members a chance to raid the bigger places as well.

The trouble with wow, I think, is that it is too easy, bright, cheery, fun, even the grinding is less of a grind than other mmo's.
It's an mmo light.
It's open to all...most people in WoW don't know there are other games like it out there heh
There is a reason it's the only really billion dollar mmo. This makes it widely available to all and more people play thus more people with addictive personalities play.

Mimi, you wuld be suprised at just how many of those sooo many WoW players are addicted. And how many that are, don't admit it.

Serious question to those who have perhaps found a game too addictive in the past - do you/did you still find the game 'fun' - or is it something other than fun which you are/were experiencing?

The game has always been fun to me, I have a great laugh with the people I play with and the characters I play.
If it starts to not be fun..ex I have played too much for a few days or months and need a break, I take a break.
I play something else, I go out etc. I always go back..something always draws me back.
There is always something to do, something to work for, a reason to grind or a new character to muck about on.

Lordy Lordy online has nearly always been fun for me. I had a break nethertheless when it became a little samey for a few levels, and I fancied a change. I've never understood the addiction people have to getting better items in MMO's, I'm mildly pleased when I get a new weapon but the buzz for me has always been exploring and socialising.

The closest I ever came to being addicted on a game is Civ II & Civ IV, where I was staying up far too late playing. It was compelling fun all the way though. Good question though - a lot of people begin to treat MMO's as work. But this is what I like about LotR:Online, nice sweeps of lovely scenery leading to photography fun...

I never got to try WoW...

I spent forever downloading a torrent of the trial version, only to discover it was for North America only. I'm not sure what the difference was, but they could fuck off after that, basically.

Played it since launch, played for over 100 days total. Do I play it too much? I've decided recently I do, having got a bit bored of it. But here's the thing, it never took over other parts of my life. All WoW did was steal 95% of my gaming time for the best part of two years, and on reflection I'd have had more fun playing 50 other games.

I can stop whenever I want - I have done, in fact I spent weeks of heavy playing trying to get something, then my exams started approaching so I dropped it cold. Once I went back I had to start from scratch again.

American versions mean you can only play on American servers.
WoW's cheap enough to just waste a tenner on now days anyway lol

There was some problem at the point of registration... I think I tried to put in my details and it refused saying that it didn't match the region, or something.

It had been in my torrent queue for so long that I'd forgotten about it and so was taken by surprise when it suddenly finished.

i have the exact opposite problem. I can't get addicted to anything. I can't even buy the same pack of cerials twice. I can't finish any game nowadays....

Is there anyone here who plays WoW in Linux?

I don't sorry; I wanted to say there are a few Linuxy types here though. And, er, 90% of the folks I work with are Linux WoW players, if it can wait ;)

Yeah, it's not urgent but I'm having issues.
I've gone back to playing in Windows till (I hope) I can find a solution.

I'll be chatting with Sheepeh about it too, as it's his Pc I'm on atm..but the graphical glitches, sound glitches and general laggy play are getting me down and need sorting. I'm hoping I can make it run a lot smoother.
