Have to disagree with you there, it's all a substantial improvement on the dire season 5. I even like the 'flash sideways' parts.

I dunno... I just feel that it's getting more confusing and anything they do show us tends to be slightly lame. The cave was interesting, and the thing about Jacob's intentions are interesting, but it doesn't seem to have as much as an impact as it did a while ago.

I'll still wtach it, mind.

I have just caught up by watching seasons three through present day in a few weeks.

I am fantastically excited, but still silly things stick in my mind that I may have missed the answers to, like where did Charlotte's body go?

In theory, it's still laid on the island somewhere. She died in a different time period and therefore stopped jumping in time with rest of them. Memory fails me, but weren't they in the deep past when she died?

Well, episode 6 wins my vote for most padded and badly written episode in season 6.

So far ...........

Man, that was pretty dull (episode 6)

Apart from the big shift at the end, I was barely watching it. Sayid is not an engaging character.

Didja see Jack in the hospital tho?

It's a shame, because we kind of know know that everyone would end up intertwined in one way or another now in the alternate timeline, so it doesn't have any impact.

I'm more interested in what's happening back on the island, and trying to work out whether it's still the real timeline.

Post subject:  Re: Lost Thread - Spoiler caution

to be honest, the flash sideways thing has been dull, melodramatic shit from the start.

In fact, anything that's ever happened off the island (Hugo's story excluded) has generally bored me.

Yeah, ok, granted, the Locke one was good, but only in context. Imagine watching it without having a prior knowledge of Locke's past.

True but we have to take into account that this is the sixth season of the bloomin' thing. Your point regarding the others is valid though, in Lost world as in the real world; pretty = dull.

My friend raised a good point about ep 5.

The alternate timeline takes place just a day or two after the plane lands in LAX, as Locke is fired straight after getting back from his holiday. He then goes to the temp agency owned by Hurley. Rose sees him there.

If Rose works for Hurley, how did she not recognise him on the plane or on the island in the initial timeline?

Or can that be explained away by the fact that she would never have met her faceless CEO?

The timelines are not as simple as "they diverged when the plane didn't crash". Lots of things from before the crash are different too. For example, Locke has a good relationship with his father, and Sayid has been doing oil company contracts. Ethan is a doctor, Linus a schoolteacher, and Dugan lives in LA.

So the timelines diverge in 1977 -- when the bomb goes off. Hence the Others are in very different places, whereas the Losties' lives only differ a little. I suspect that this will come down to the idea that Jacob and/or the man in black was fiddling with their lives -- and in an era where the island was destroyed, they couldn't fiddle.

Author:  Zio [ Thu Mar 04, 2010 14:37 ]
Post subject:  Re: Lost Thread - Spoiler caution

There are lots of differences in the 'didn't crash' timeline. Hurley saying he's "the luckiest guy on Earth" or something like that on the plane? Jack having a son? Locke apparentely having a good relationship with his father (yet still being paralysed)? Desmond being on the plane? So clearly there's more to all that than just 'this is what would've happened if they hadn't crashed'.

I haven't seen the latest episode yet, I have it queued up for a watching this very evening. Sounds like the hive mind wasn't that keen on it though.

Post subject:  Re: Lost Thread - Spoiler caution

Very good point about the timelines not simply diverging when the plane lands.

I am quite happy to let further mysteries wash over me :)

Although time spent on Lostpedia is just confusing!

Oh yeah, Jack's son!

Hurley can be explained. No island, no numbers broadcast from the tower, no old-army-buddy hears numbers, no mental-hospital-guy to tell the numbers to Hurley. So he wins the lottery but never gets superstitious about it. He needs a different reason to be in Australia then though.

By the way, for those who don't know the numbers correspond to 6 of the Losties written on Jacob's big rock o' cadidates: http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/The_Numbers

It was OK, but there's too many instances of Major Character Who Knows Stuff simply refusing to answer direct questions.

Post subject:  Re: Lost Thread - Spoiler caution

Also, I'm not sure Desmond was on the plane -- he vanishes after Jack deals with Charlie. Seeing as how he's a Constant, and could time travel in previous episodes, I think he maintains some sort of ability to cross between the diverged timelines, or similar.

Also also: alterna-Jack's significant glance at the appendix scar, and asking his mom when he had his appendix removed suggests that 1) that part of the timeline is different and 2) alterna-Jack is aware subconsiously of the diverged timelines.

There's a theory that the parallel timeline is actually what happens *after* the island events have played out. Perhaps the losties decide to 'reset' and live without any island influence.

Hmm, I don't see that being the case. The first episode was pretty explicit in showing the bomb going off and not going off.

I also refer my learned colleague to that bit wot I said up there about Locke getting on with his dad. I can't remember exactly what was said now, but there was a very specific bit in the week before last's episode where the conversation between Locke and Leela-from-Futurama subtly implied that Locke had a great relationship with his dad. Which presumably means he must've become paralysed through means other than his father pushing him out of a window.

I think they've all gone back to reality whoop there goes gravity, and the stuff on the island is what would have happened, ie the island isn't real/it all being a dream.

Consider this: Jacob's Nemesis offering Sayid the thing he want's the most (Nadia) and Nadia being alive (albeit with his brother) in the other timeline. Seems like a dick move by a manipulator, no? How about Jack having a son and being a good dad? Hurley being lucky? John being happy (ish)? Claire getting to keep her baby?

Well the fact that he made hurley take jack away from the smoke/lockes terrorising of the temple means he basically wants jack to take over surely.

What I want to know is, what would they have seen in the lighthouse mirror if they had turned it to 108 degrees, as Jacob had originally requested? Bearing in mind that 4 + 8 + 15 + 16 + 23 + 42 = 108

The Wallace thing could be a red herring, is one theory. Jacob did want Jack away from the Temple, which happened. I can't help but think Jack will be the new Jacob, and Sawyer the new Man In Black. Although, FLocke is doing a pretty good job of that already.

And the most boring character in the history of fiction is, actually, Dr Daniel Jackson from Stargate SG-1, fact fans.

Jacob didn't really need Jack away from the temple, more just so that he could see the lighthouse and realise his destiny in his own mind.
