Curio, I'm on my phone now, so I'll brief.

#1- all iPods, ever, can only sync with a single iTunes. This is unfortunate, as it means you have to gather all music for the iPhone on a single computer. There is an upside though, for example, that iTunes will have a total backup the phone, right down to every SMS and contact, and little stuff like "last played" will sync from phone to iTunes.

I don't know I'd this one-iTunes-per-iPod thing was Apple's decision, or part of their commercial agreement with the labels.

#2- not sure why this is off-hand.

I'm really not sure this is the case anymore. I've got multiple iTunes accounts on various macs around the house and I can drag and drop music from any of them onto any of my iPods or phone. I think if you click sync it's a problem, but if you select "manually manage music" it appears to work for me.

Well, I've ordered an iPhone. It's the beginning of the end.

Except of course, O2's shiny new B2B 'microsite' doesn't actually work, so I have to fax them my order. *sigh*

I'm taking mine back to Apple today. For some reason I looked at the back of the phone over the weekend and there is a tiny hairline crack from the dock connector running up the centre of the phone for about 12mm. My initial response was to scream and swear and blame it on when I took my jeans off, whilst drunk, with my phone in the pocket sending it hurtling at speed across the flat onto a laminate floor.

A brief review of the internet (while seeing how easy/expensive it would be to replace the back), however, shows that every single iphone ever manufactured* has this problem (the crack, not the flying) and if you take it into the Apple Store they will replace it on sight, assuming that the rest of the case isn't fucked to buggery.

I shall report back if it turns out that this fine example of customer service is actually true, or an internet 'fact'.

*may be an exaggeration

I may not be getting a G1 this lunchtime, as I haven't got any utility bills with me.
However, I've done a spot of forgery and now have four months worth of Sky bills, so I'll give it a shot.

I'm fucked if I actually need a bill, as I don't get any utility bills through the post any more. These places really need to find a better way of confirming your address.

My iPhone will be arriving tomorrow. If it gets a crack in the back I'm going to beat up Riles for cursing it.

I think the only bills we get are council tax, mortgage and water. Every thing else is electronic

I thought they'd fixed that cracking problem -- that it only applied to a few early models. You were unlucky, I think, Riles. We have seven iPhones in this office amongst staff and spouses of staff, and none of them have suffered from it.

Mine is about 6 months old. In all honesty, the crack could have been there for a while, it does just look like a scratch in normal light, but it isnae.

This wouldn't happen if you had one of the metal-backed 2G iPhones.

Why oh why etc.

Good call. To Liverpool Street!

First impressions: It looks a lot better in real life than it does in the photos. It's not nearly as curved at the end.

And the 3G chip itself too. But primarly the GPS chip. GPS signals are so weak (millions of times weaker than GSM signals) that it's a wonder GPS works at all.

My 3G has only ever used GPS once to my knowledge - relying solely on 3G data. Which makes sense, if it can't access the network to location point, it can't download the map. I belatedly realised this when in a side street in downtown bangkok with data roaming switched off.

All sorts of apps will fire up the GPS, like most of the location-aware cinema ads, or Twitter clients that can post your location, etc etc. It's much more than the mapping app.

There's an app I have to look at 360 achievements. I have no idea why it always wants to use my location. I promptly tell it to fuck off every time.

Odd. Also, once you've said "no" twice in a row, the iPhone should stop asking you.

Out of politeness?

I forget, I have possibly used GPS to MarioJump in various places.

Except my 2G iPhone can always find my location (albeit a bit slowly). I'm assuming it's not using GPS, as it doesn't have it. It uses mobile masts to 'pinpoint' my position. I assume Riles means his uses 3G and not GPS.

It uses Skyhook WiFi positioning, I've written about this before.

It's so it doesn't bother you each time. If you click "yes" or "no" twice in a row, the setting sticks.

'Should' implies the option to refuse, which this application clearly does, as it wanted to know where I was eight times in a row just now.

Actually, that's not supposed to happen. "Should" I used because your iPhone is weird; see earlier discussion about tapping home.

Well, here is my first G1 post. The keyboard isn't bad, a bit small maybe. I can see myself having problems if it wasn't on my desk.
What apps should I be installing, fellow trend-buckers?

I really like the keyboard, it reminds me of a spectrum one for some reason (I think it's all the extra characters on the letters, they should have called it symbol shift instead of alt).

I only got mine yesterday, so I can't really recommend anything (I haven't even used it as a phone yet ?:| ).

You're both making me wish I'd gone for this instead of staying with O2 and pocketing the £30 per month. But then I think if I had the £540 it would cost me for the 18 month contract in my hand now would I spend it on a mobile phone. Probably not really. See also: the iPhone.

G1 owners should install ShopSavvy from the market. It lets you scan an item's barcode and then tells you the best prices online and locally. Awesome!

I just tried this and grabbed the first thing to hand which was a copy of Mirror's Edge for the 360 (actually, I grabbed GH:WT at first, but that doesn't have a barcode on the case). Cheapest it could find was £13.99 used from Amazon, and £14.99 new from Amazon. I clicked on the "new" link, which took me to the Amazon page where it's £17.96 :( (although it is available used for £13.99).

Interesting. Amazon used to vary their pricing according to your account history -- for example, offering small discounts to browsers with no Amazon cookie (as they are potential new customers). I don't know if they still do that, but it would tie into what you are seeing.

I don't think so. Going through my phone, firefox on my pc (logged into my account) or IE on my pc (which has most likely never been used to browse amazon) all give the same price.

G1 owners should install ShopSavvy from the market. It lets you scan an item's barcode and then tells you the best prices online and locally. Awesome!

I tried this with a Ryvita bar and it tried to sell me a Man City video 8) :S
